As a possibility could we have the P51 B/C loaded out optionally with 4x20mm's? Would certianly make things very entertaining /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif Given what i have read from these web sites it would appear that the RAF wanted them with 20mm.

Heres my source as well

http://home.sandiego.edu/~joshuaa/history.html

"P-51B and the P-51C. At first they were installed with 1,300 hp V-1650-3 engines but would be replaced with the V-1650-7 engines which produced 1,645 hp. Armament for both would be four 20mm cannons but altered to six .50 inch guns. Drop-tanks could be carried extending the range of the Mustang to 2,080 miles".

http://members.tripod.com/Air_Museum_ww2/id23.htm

"Model NA-73; Developed for UK
Prod. model; 4 20mm cannon
Fitted w/ bomb racks; 4 "

What does every one think then?

Most of the P-51B's...I don't know about the C's...but the B models had four .50cal. Maybe the British versions of the C had 20mm's? It'd be a nice option for sure...

No, the P-51B/C, which used the Packard-Merlin, only had .50" mgs. The Mustang that had the 20mm cannons was powereed by an Allison V-1710 engine(P-51/Mustang IA).

I could have sworn that I'd seen a P-51C with the Malcom hood and 4x20mm cannons.

Were any A models equipped with the Malcom hood?

Did the a/c have a top or bottom air intake? If it was on top then it is an Allison powered Mustang.

I don't remember, it was several years ago. I remember it being classified as a P51 Mark III, British markings, no farings on the cannon barrels, and a malcom hood. I do know that the P-51A models had the Allison engine and the P-51B, C, and D models were all powered by the excellent Packard licensed-built Rolls Royce Merlin engine.

Wasn't implying that you did not know the difference but the air intake is the easiest way to tell a P-51/A/Mustang I from the P-51B/C/Mustang III.

The British had the Mustang I with the cannons so if any were still around it is possible that the Malcolm hood was fitted.

There where a total of 150 mustangs build, with 20mm guns. But, be sure, these wheren't 'C' models. The Mustang with the 20mm guns where even before the 'A'. Altough they where build for the british, the USA also used a number (70 or so) of them.

Hmm, ditto.

Thought they were an Apache thing that was brought over to the B model but must've remembered it wrong :<

I surly hope the B model will be faster more directional stable and because of the 4x instead of six .50 be more manuevreble Then the D model, as it was so in reality.

A couple of Ace's preffered the B model over the newer D, they did not need the extra guns and the custom Malcom Hood gave a exellent allround field of view!

Kees.

the A-36 Apachee was a Dive Bomber based on the mustang.
It was armed with 6 .50 cals. 2 in each wing & 2 mounted under the chin of the plane. Was equiped with Dive Flaps.
