Don't get on with Beevor myself. Might try Enemy though, sounds good, wrapping the battle around a personal story.

I seem to get on with Max Hasting's histories, despicable Tory rotter that he is. If you're an utter masochist try Heinz Guderian's 'Panzer Leader.' Drier than a very dry Martini.

William Craig's book is excellent, but has some severe shortcomings. He did an extremely poor job of fact checking, instead relying on the accounts of those he interviewed and taking them at their word. Still it is excellent. The Beevor book is better in this respect.

I think my parents thought I was going to be a war-monger, as all I would read was war books/comics when I was a kid. They were escpecially worried when I pulled up with the 'The Blond Knight' and never spoke to, or saw them for the next few days.

Thanks for the Heads Up... I'm off to the book store tomorrow.

Actually, about the only thing the movie took from the book was the name. This is not entirely true, there are maybe 4 or 5 pages outlining the essential plot of the movie. Craig's book actually follows the whole course of the battle mostly from first person accounts.
The film was mostly adapted from a book called "War of the Rats" by David Robbins. And while it's true that Beevor's Stalingrad is better documented and probably a better book, "Enemy" real does a nice job of personalizing the battle kind of like the books by Stephen E. Ambrose, not scholarly but very engaging.

Ukrainian women at least. Not the same thing these days.

At home I have a terribly depressing but quite well written account by a German soldier, one of the many war paperbacks published in the 50s. I'll dig it up and post the info at home soemtime.

mllaneza: Blood Red Snow?

I have that book but have yet to start it. I'm still in the middle of "The Blond Knight of Germany".
