Probably old hat now but has anyone worked out a map to use during training flights in the original IL2 Sturmovik?

I think he means training missions, not actual area maps. I haven't really seen any of those.

Yep, I mean the training flights - seems to me the best way to practice landing, taking off, ( +flying under bridges and between smokestacks!) etc would be with a map of the areas around the training fields - strange not to be included.

I've only recently discovered this 'game' and to me it's obviously the very best flightsim around - the shoot 'em up side doesn't appeal to me in the least (enough happening in the real world to sicken me of destruction) but the flight characteristics are superb. A map just like the mission ones would make the prog complete, imo...

Another issue that has nme baffled is the 1.2 upgrade - it doesn't seem to have a setup.exe and no instructions as to how to upgrade - when I just copy the files in from the zip the prog just freezes and dumps me back to windoze (I'm running on an old P3 Dell server Win98se with no probs with the 1.1 upgrade)

Thanks for the responses so far,

mango

There are some basics missions here:
http://www.airwarfare.com/Sims/IL2/il2_tracks.htm

I don't remeber who, but someone recently re-packaged the original IL-2 missions and demo missions for use in FB. IIRC they did include the training tracks.

If you can find the orginal IL-2 game just don't patch it 1.04. The training tracks no longer worked after that patch..

Many thanks for the link Beebop - I'll check it out.
I've become convinced that the 1.1a upgrade doesn't work either - it seems to install but there's no version change notice nor nuffink...

Your welcome Mango.

I'm not even sure if you can pick up a retail version of the original IL-2 that hasn't already been patched so that the training tracks don't work. If that's the version you have http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif. Maybe you can find a pre-factory patch version somewhere. If I can remember/find those repackaged tracks I'll PM you w/the info.

Sounds like you got your 1.1a patch from the ubi france server. if so, can give you detailed info. Or you could get it the way it should be from 3d gamers.

Thanks once again!

I figured that ubisoft will only upgrade to their own path - i.e. C:\program files - ugh - I try to keep my C: drive clean of everything but windows - makes for easier re-installs from an image file.

So I've now 'successfully' upgraded IL2 to v1.2 BUT the ESC key no longer works - arrghh! Back to the CD version - I wuz so hoping to get this all working on me LAN but I gather you need the upgrade to get that to work - Catch 22 - it was just like this in the military... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Its common that patching will cause the occasional corruption, no big deal.

Confirm that this line is in your conf. If absent, add, close and save changes.

just start Quick Mission Builder and fly around. Dont add any enemies. Or use Full Builder and place plane of your choice on map of choice. Use air start and fly where ever and do whatever. Simple really.

Steve you're a marvel - thanks for the helping hand to a newbie.

Lav9 - you've just helped me get a grip on the structure of IL2 - it gets better the more I look... I'm new to 'games' generally (had me head down on other stuff for too many years) so 'simple really' only applies once you know... ;-)

What a brilliant sim this is!
