Classic ShZ-50 flying helmets, modeled after Luftwaffe helmets, were worn by MiG pilots during '60s-'70s and are still worn by Russian bomber pilots.
This is the quote describing the type of helmet that's modeled to the pilot's 3d model in FB/PF series, found in a militaria site.
(See center of pic, red outlined)
Compare with helmets used by various nations involving in FB/PF series.
(from left to right:
Finnish,German,Russian,,British,US,Japanese.)
No one shows such bulge on top of the helmet.
Please remove this totaly unhistoric bulge.
It's very easy to just remove it since the crown of the helmet is already modeled on the 3d model beneath it, not any further changes needed to the skins mapping also.

Although this would be nice to have for EYE CANDY, I believe that this would screw up the 'polygon load' per cockpit or position for every pilot or campaign or map you load from different countries/nationalities because of the added detail.

I personally prefer to have 'generic' pilot over detailed ones because you rarely see them anyhow unless a) flying bomber b) gunner and any other position you dont really see a pilot unless you like to do the "'Top Gun'inverted MIG routine" and doing 'diplomatic relations' while you fly online http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I don't disagree with you,on the contrary I'm with you on the generic pilot idea. I dont ask for detailed pilot models for every country,I don't ask any detail addition, I just ask this unhistoric bulge to be REMOVED from the helmet. It was a mistake to model such bulge on the first place, adding polygons with no reason to the model.
I skin pilots and I know were the different parts ,consisting the model, are located on a template and the whole head(helmet) without the bulge seems to have been already modelled.
The photo was attached not to show the different types of helmets used in WWII but to show the difference between the helmet modelled and real helmets.
After all Oleg himself said: Provide us proof that something is modelled wrong and we'll fix it.

From the appeal of this topic, I guess, nearly nobody realy cares for minor details such as the pilots helmets http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif
After all, I must admit, it's too late for tears now.
Hope for more accuratte representation of the pilots in BoB.

Well, I agree, but Oleg`s probably got more pressing matters. Anyway, Can I take some of this stuff for my art-reference work? It`s great stuff! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I appreciate what you're saying, and I'm a huge fan of your pilot skins, but I kinda like the non historic bulge. It gives the helmets a little character.

I don't agree, I would prefer a samurai helmet for the Japanese http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
Call me detail and accuracy freak but I find the bulge ridiculus http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif
Sorry!

I agree that the helmet bulge is irritating. It's a surprisingly sloppy historical mistake that bugs me the same way that Pershing tanks dressed up as Tigers did in war movies from the 1960's. It would be an easy fix.

Thanks a lot Hptm.Keule http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif
Back parachute sacks in fact, were modelled in IL2(original).
They could use (in FB) the "wasted" polygons from helmet to model something more usefull.
