View Full Version : Smoke trails from tracers

Just a quick question:

In game, why is it that MG tracers don't leave a smoke trail? I'd imagine they operate by the same principle as the cannon rounds, just smaller.

Is this a historical feature, or something else - like a game design decision?

Raaaid complained the spirals were causing a shift in the space time continuum, and stopped his time machine from working.

So they were removed.

I had heard that the MG had no smoke as it would have been a big performance hit back in the day. Look at the multiple MG gun platforms (Like the 12 gun Hurri). That would be a lot of smoke. For the MGs that do have smoke modeled I think it looks good. Take the Italian planes for instance. Those were done quite well I think.

I thought it might be something to do with the "TIE fighters don't leave smoke trails when they fire - neither should I-16s" argument. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

Since George Lucas is such a big history buff and really liked the WW2 dogfights (a lot of Star Wars was inspired from that stuff) I was surprised there was no "laser smoke" in his movies.

hang a disco ball in the cockpit and you got yourself a nice laser show up high!

I think its a matter of most cannons left definitive smoke trails while the trails on the .50cals tended to be hard to see or not present (probably depending on atmospheric conditions). Probably the same goes for the rest. Italian MG's have smoke tails...

To be honest I'd rather not have the smoke...it really makes it obvious that you're shooting at someone.

I dunno. I reckon .50 cals would "feel" more powerful if there was some kind of smoketrail. It wouldn't have to be much, but combined over 6 - 8 guns it would make a difference.

Yeah, it would give the target more warning that they're being shot at, but I reckon it'd be a worthy trade-off. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Smoke trails would be cool, but there are more pressing matters http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

As has been stated a thousand times, all I want for Chirstmas is the right loadout for the .50s! Sorry to hi-jack the thread a little bit, but has there been any indication that BoB will allow customisation of the ammo belts?

If you look at gun camera footage you will see than the 50 caliber doesn't always leave a smoke trail. Why? I don't know, maybe the use of different compounds in the tracer or perhaps it was altitude/temperature dependent.

That and BETTER SOUNDS! The .50 sounds like a danged peashooter, compared to the MG131 or the .30 cal. I'd prefer even CFS's sound to the one we have right now.

Smoke and better sounds for the .50 would be kick butt...
