View Full Version : Level bombers - anyone got a Pe-2 TAS/alt/elevation table yet?

Just asking before I go and do one myself....

No point in replecating if there's already one out there! I've got a couple of choice angles and favour 4x250kg.

Thanks!

I think its on the AEP CD....I have one I printed out. Might be on AirWarfare's website as well.

Take AEP disc 2, and open it up via 'Explore' in My Computer, go to MANUAL, go to IAS/TAS chart or something like that, open it, and print it out.

Nah, I don't mean just an IAS/TAS chart, I have that, I'm after an elevation chart for the Pe-2 bombsight for accurate drops from altitude.

For instance:

3000m @ 370kmh IAS = 445kmh TAS and a sight elevation of 44 degrees.

It's not so simple, it also depends on what type of bomb you have loaded (as written in the documentation given by Oleg).

But why bother when the bombsight is doing all calculations for you? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yeah, I favour the 4x250kg loadout.

And I'm an old fashioned kinda guy who enjoys manually pickling weapons (plus its handy in a fix to have a selection of commonly used manual release angles if you spot a target of opportunity and haven't time to set up the sight computer).

Out of interest, and I've not played with it much yet, is there sight automation on the Pe-2? If there is, is it mapped differently to that on the B25/He-111 (the key I have mapped doesn't have any effect in the Pe-2).

I don't know anything about that but I just wanted t thank you for your Level Bombing Guide. It's magnificent and thanks to you I'm now having a lot of fun bombing anything on the ground in my trusty B-25 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Why thankyou!

If I ever get a spare weekend I'll update it for the Pe-2 (hence the questions), it's looking a little long in the tooth these days http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I've got a little PDA with MS Excel on it, so I set up a worksheet with the necessary conversion formulae so I could do this on the fly.

The formula for changing IAS to TAS that seems to work best for me in this sim is:

((altitude/1000) * (IAS * 0.02)) + IAS

I dare say that there is a more elegant way of doing this, but it does seem to work.

By the way I fly in feet and inches, so have another formula to convert to metres/kph etc. The converted metric values seem to give pretty accurate results with the automatic angle generator in the sight.

The only problem is that by the time I've finished fiddling around with that little stylus and then dialed the numbers into the bombsight, I'm short of time for making the bomb run. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Dare say I'll get better at it... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

PS. AFAIK you only have manual bomb release on the Pe-2

No, there is no automation in the Pe-2 bombsight. No tracking of target, no automated bomb release.

You just input TAS and height above target, and it calculates the impact point of bombs.

No need to fly straight for some minutes as other stabilized bombsights. You should fly straight at the moment you release bombs, of course.

How do you find out the tagarts alt. above sea level?

The mission maps do not contain information relating to height of land features above mean sea level (QNH), which is the pressure that altimeters seem to be set to in in-game aircraft, so it is not possible to work out the exact height of your aircraft above what ever bit of ground you are flying over simply by looking at the map and doing a bit of subtraction (which is what I guess they would have done - I don't know, none of the accounts I've read of bombing practices go into this detail).

Unless the map is particularly mountainous, though, or the target is on top of a bl**dy great hill, you can probably safely assume that height of target will be roughly similar to your height at take off.

You will still need to do the maths, of course, because it is not possible to re-set your altimeter to QFE (height above airfield for want of a better definition), but your starting height should give you a pretty good guide.

Alternatively, fly a recce mission (might be useful for locating the targets anyway) - take a Mozzie and imagine you are a Pathfinder... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
