OK, I admit it: I'm imprinted like a duckling with the La-5fn in my campaign. I love how it flys, I love how it shoots, it feels right to me. Well, well well, in my campaign, my lt. Nabakov is now flying Yaks for Big Joe...and losing. It's kinda funny, in QMB I'll set up a fight between my Yak 9D and a Fw 190D-9 and lose, horribly. I'll do the same thing in my beloved La-5fn, and it takes a little doing sometimes, but I flame the Dora. And The Yak 9D vs. a Bf 109G-10? Same story...but in the La-5fn, I smoke the G-10 quickly.

Obviously I don't know how to fly the Yak-9D to advantage.
I'm hoping that Moscow will come to it's senses, and either send lt. Nabakov to a training escadrilla as an instructor, or transfer him to a unit flying the La-5fn where he belongs, but until the La-7 is available or his transfer comes in, it looks like he's flying Yaks, poorly, in the 5th Guards.

What are the tactics being used by succesful Yak-9D pilots in the offline campaign? I need quick pointers, It's embarrasing that a Hero of the Soviet Union like Nabakov can't even get on a German's tail anymore. His squadmates are starting to say the old man's lost his touch...

I'll make you feel better. The Yak 9D is a piece of crap! I have no advice except try and stay alive. The La5FN is twice the plane.

Forget it. Pick up a 262 or a 190.

The "D" in Yak~9D is short Russian for Dalnostnyi (long distance) and if you fly with 100% fuel, you will PAY for carrying around all that weight on these little FB maps, and you will lose.

FB maps and I guess the campaign missions are not big enough to let the FB simmer *see* the WAR winning advantages of long range fighter escorts.

Just wait until we see the ace arcade online internet dogfighters whine about their long range flyable USA P~51D escort fighters getting shot down by short range BF109K interceptors on the 50km dogfight maps. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

If you fly as commander you can reduce the fuel load can't you ?

I flew some QMB missions & set the fuel at 25 % It seemed to fly alright to me.

just a thought, tho I know you can't change your rank in the middle of a campaign.
