View Full Version : PC Problems/Questions Discussion Thread of Epicness

Figured we might as well do this.

TFS_Jackie edit: I'm editing out the word "official". We are going to have to start cracking down on that. Considering that these are Ubis "official" forums, the word official should be saved for things that are from the company.

Well ubi has official, but we have Epicness, yall dont know about that ya hurd.. Dont be gettin jealous Ubi. Dont hate.

01-20-2008, 04:53 PM
But being Ubi is all about hating anything that doesn't deal with getting money... including fixing games.http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Does Ubi have "unofficial" forums?

I agree with the edit, which still is a bit lame. Catering to the dumber people (no titles because its hard to read "moderator", no certain words like in this thread, dumbed down games) seems to be the new policy. Good job!

so umm...what is this thread for, again? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

How do i check my computer specs so i can post them on here, and you guys can tell me what i need new, probably everything.

01-20-2008, 11:22 PM
Easiest way?

Well this way is most thorough.

Start Menu > Run > dxdiag (type this and hit enter) > look through the menus and such, you can even save the whole thing as a txt file. This is great for tech support.

It should tell you your CPU, ram, mobo, GFX card, Sound card/drivers.

01-20-2008, 11:22 PM
run dxdiag

I'm quite aware of who it is.

ohh, you beat me even though our posts are at the same exact time.

So i got a new custom built PC from a family friend yesterday for 300.I know it isnt a god or anything but it is alot better then the previous PC I had.

Casing with Blue LED and see-through side panel.
ATI Radeon 9550/X1050
Intel Celeron CPU 2.70 GHz
DVD Drive/Dvd Burner.

It blows my old PC away like i said before but i know its not able to run games like COD4 and GoW so if someone could tell me what i need upgrade and links to where i can buy it i would be very thankful. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

First things first, do you know what slot that video card is? PCI, AGP or PCIe? If its PCI you cant do crappola with it, if its AGP, we might could do some damage, PCIe is ideal.

05-18-2008, 11:02 PM
Granted you might have wanted to be nice to your buddy by purchasing that computer off of him but you got RIPPED OFF.

Going by what you describe as the processor and the video card you probably have an AGP video slot and SD RAM. If you are lucky you might have DDR RAM at like 400 MHz i'm kinda doubting that though.

Either way you pretty much can't run any game that is newer than three years old without slowing down.

Don't bother trying to "upgrade" this computer. This one will keep you checking your email for a few good years.

Actually, MaximumPC just did a thing about upgrading older PCs. First we need to know what motherboard is in it. Grab Belarc Advisor and run it and save the file that is generated to disk. That is for reference and will tell you everything installed hardware and software wise. It will tell you which motherboard you have and even the FSB that it is running at.

A P4 chip (with a possible RAM upgrade) will help as the Celeron chips are basically crippled chips. They feature less L1 and L2 cache on the chip along with a few other small differences.

If the motherboard is capable of running in dual channel mode, going from one stick of RAM to 2 smaller sticks in the proper slots will give a boost in preformance.

Currently i have 2 sticks of 512 in it.So wont I be able to get 2 sticks of 2024 and then have 4GB of RAM?

So far all the games i tried on it i have been able to run at the highest settings:

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
KoTOR 1 & 2
Rise of Nations
World of Warcraft
Battlefeild 1942 & All Expansions
Fable the Lost Chapters
Guild Wars

Old games, but my old PC couldnt ran half of those.

Ill run Belarc once i get out of school and post the jist of it on here.

05-19-2008, 08:54 AM
Sorry man, we cant do nothing until you tell us what motherboard you have.

Like WK said, go here... http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Dload it, then install and run it. Then you should see something along the lines of this.

List whats in red. Preferably whats underlined.

Main Circuit Board:
Board: PCCHIPS M963GV 5.X
Bus Clock: 100 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 080009 09/29/2006

And my video card is AGP John.

Here is your motherboard (http://www.pcchips.com.tw/PCCWebSite/Products/ProductsDetail.aspx?CategoryID=1&TypeID=3&DetailID=377&DetailName=Feature&MenuID=1&LanID=0)

Your processor upgrade (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116215)

Best Video upgrade (for that computer) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130099) Even this is overkill for that processor and RAM.

Don't bother upgrading your RAM. Anything more than 1 Gb of RAM in that computer is a waste.

Total price, $300 + $119 + $73 + $15(shipping) = $507

05-20-2008, 12:00 AM
Without knowing what RAM you have though will not tell us what you would need, if any, to go with that new CPU if you should get it. That chip Boobisphere posted has a 533mHz FSB.

05-20-2008, 12:11 AM
According to the specs on the motherboard it supports 533 or 400 FSB and 800 MHz by Overclocking.

He said he has 2x 512Mb sticks of RAM. Like i said, one gig of RAM with that configuration would be plenty. Any more would be wasted unless he plans on doing some heavy photoshop work or 3D modeling.

05-20-2008, 01:04 AM
The thing is, what is it? PC 133 or PC 266? It even could be PC 100 (after all the FSB is at 100mHz right now). Ya do not want to use PC 100 with a chip that has an FSB of 533mHz, you create a bottleneck.

05-20-2008, 06:46 AM
Well poop http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Edit: Would i be able to run this (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1892411&Sku=A177-3102&SRCCODE=NEXTAG&CMP=EMC-NEXTAG) with my PC so i could run Unreal 3,i think its the only thing i need to meet the requirements and be a little bit above when it comes to the video card and RAM.The only spec. i dont meet is the recommended Dual Core Processor.

05-20-2008, 07:53 AM
Don't even think about running UT3 with that. You'll have 10fps or less. The same goes for the rest of your PC: keep it to Flash games and games that are 3-4 years old. SCCT will probably work ok-ish, on medium resolutions.

05-20-2008, 06:06 PM
Ive been playing SCCT on high settings and it works fine.

Meh,i wont worry about a PC now,its better then my old one,i have my 360 for newer games,PC for some classics & older exclusives.

And i should save money for my vacation to Mexico this summer.

Thanks for everyones advice though. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I've got a problem with my laptop http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif

Recently, after leaving my laptop idle for a while (usually overnight or for several hours or some such), when I wake it up again, my cursor is gone. Invisible. Restarting my laptop makes the problem go away...until I leave my laptop idle for a few hours again. This isn't a matter of not being able to find the cursor, as I've set up my mouse options so that when I press Ctrl, it does the little cocentric circles around the cursor dealie. I'll press Ctrl, and it'll show the circles wherever the cursor should be. I can still use programs just fine, can highlight different buttons (eg. the minimize, maximize, close buttons on windows) when the mouse moves over them (still can't see the cursor, but can see the colors of the button change).

Is this a virus or something? I am running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1

PS I just opened up Control Panel and all the icons are larger than they should be. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif I don't remember changing any settings that would do that.

06-15-2008, 10:04 PM
Run that NOD32 son! If nothing shows up, you dont have a virus, NOD32 doesnt make mistakes lol

06-15-2008, 11:29 PM
It is probably a bug due to the computer going into suspend mode of some sort as you leave it alone for a while.

All you have to do to fix it is install XP for the next year or so until Vista has been patched up some more.
