Hi,

Was wondering if people can shed some light on the variation between these planes. I know the Mk VIII came after the MkIX even though it is lower in the numbers. But after testing them both in PF the only difference i can find is the fact that the Mk VIII has a retractable tail wheel and has half the cannon ammo. 12 seconds in the IX ok but 6 seconds worth in the VIII why? also i cannot find any performance variables between the marks at all.

The Spitfire Mk VIII was the Mark designed to take the 60 or 70 series (not sure if it's one or the other, or both-away from my resources) Merlins, the Mk IX was the stopgap Mk V with the 60/70 'strapped on.'

The Mk VIII was not used in the ETO, but saw a lot of use in the Med, CBI, and Pacific theaters. Most pilots who have flown both agree that the Mk VIII is the 'sweetest' flying Merlin Mark. The firing time issue in PF is an error, because the Mk VIII had either the c or e wings, same as the Mk IX.

Somehow, the developers gave it the firing time for a b wing, which went with the Spit Mk Vb/Seafire F MK II. Far as I know, the folding wing Seafires had only c/e wing armament, and no non folding Seafires made it to the Pacific (the FAA thought that the Yanks would make fun of it, but they forgot how hesitant American Naval Officers are to mock someone who has the only beer for thousands of miles).

cheers

thanks Horseback,

Well that answers that questin. From flying the Mk VIII it feels like they just copied the FM from the Mk IX but then they copied the weapons data from the Seafire or Mark Vb. So who needs to know about this cos i want it all changed http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Spit VII/VIII was derived from Spit Vc but from begin designed for Merlins series 60 (61, 63, 63A, 66 and 70) changes were mostly internal (new engine, strenghtened construction, additional fuel tanks in the wing, retractable tailwheel, smaller ailerons...).
Spit IX was actually Spit Vc with just temporarily strengtened construction allowing using Merlins series 60.

So notice they had same ancestor, almost same external design and the same engine. I don't see any reason why VIII's flying characteristics should be too different from IX's. Do you ? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Im suprised no one has mentioned how quickly the VIII overheats at all atitudes. I think its the quickest overheating plane going.

The VIII was meant to be similar to the MkV in handeling, and as fast etc as the IX i believe
