View Full Version : Advice on best online experience for me

I came to IL2 from years of playing Warbirds Scenarios and EMCs. To those not familiar with WB that means I played special events that were run a few times a week for 50-100 players, usually recreating a famous mission. Each would take 1-2 hours from gathering on the runway to arriving home again. I never played in the main 24/7 arenas which were basically 'deathmatch arenas'.

The reason I tell you this is to describe what sort of experience I enjoy. An enjoyable mission for me would consist of leading a dozen bombers with fighter escorts on a 30 to 40 minute flight to the target, never knowing when the enemy fighters would suddenly appear, dropping on target, then running home fighting off the fighters and getting home with the remains of the squadron all with bits hanging off and trailing smoke & fluids to park up on the apron. I probably enjoyed limping home more than getting back undamaged http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Dying meant you could only watch until the mission ended. Afterwards some of us would write up our after action report and post them so we could all see how the different parts of the event went and what the overall result was.

When IL2 was released it sounded ideal as the offline missions are almost exactly that. Unfortunately the reality was that the IL2 online experience almost always consisted of 'Take Off - Fly to dogfight 2 minutes away - fight' Then everyone would bail out so they could do it all again. The result of the mission was irrelevant because they just flew it 10 times in a row. I stopped playing about 2 or 3 years ago.

I have heard that IL2 now provides a more immersive experience and meaningful missions that join up to make longer campaigns. Where is the best place for me to go? I am looking for somewhere I can fly for a few hours maybe twice a week. I cannot get involved in anything that requires me to attend daily meetings at set times but can probably promise to be somewhere one or two evening a week UK time.

Sounds like you want to join a squadron and play some online campaigns!

Coops are good but they don't contain the numbers you might be looking for.

As TOAD noted: MegaMissions. Once you fly it you will always remember.

Do try and peruse this link, It's a mini movie created by

Teamspeak with working microphone and headset is required

The missions are historical in nature. We adhere to 100% historical plane sets, regardless of any game performance issues. Missions are 100% fuel and roughly last around 2 hours and contain around minimum 64 slots with a possibility of 70.

Thanks for the replies.

Can anyone explain what the Megamissions are about? What is a typical event?

What does Crazy Ivan mean by CoOp?

I have looked at several sites that are in some way connected to online campaigns/events/missions but very few of them think to explain what they are offering; they are usually just lists of rules and forthcoming events.

Online Cooperative missions. You fly against humans or AI or both in the objective oriented type of scenario. There are no respawns. You fly, you try to acheive your objectives, maybe stay alive... or maybe die http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Average COOP lasts about 35-45 min. But i`v been in COOPs that were over 1 hour long. Good stuff http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

VFC usually hosts COOPs friday night, starting around 10:30 eastern time. You are more then welcome to join. Look for us at the Hyperlobby http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Roblex,

Glad you asked about the Megamission. Basically it is a huge mission hosted on a passworded dogfight server.

The latest theme has been the Mediterranean theater with 44 Allied pilots of whom 18 to 20 have been B25's in typical 12th AF Box formations. Escorts number around 12 P47's ranging from the D22 and D27. Fighter sweeps contain 6 of each P38J and 6 to 8 P51B or D for a rough number of around 40+. The Axis participants range about 20 to 24 participants. The Axis aircraft include but are not limited to 109G6 with around 5% of total number of G6 having the 30 mil nose cannon. Also included are the 190's few in number and of course the MC205 Series III. All aircraft are historical in nature as they contain a mixture of markings (German and Italian ANR).

The last mission we held was a Po Valley campaing that included ground pounding P47's B25's A20's with their nemesis the MC205 III.

Here is a sample of =TgD=Thrud in the lead and I as his wingman in the last megamission as we dove for targets.

Here are the rest of the screens
http://www.gozr.net/iocl/viewtopic.php?t=2427&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
BTW yes that me in the P47D22 being hammered by my friend 22GCT_Pask

As I mentioned before, all the missions are historically based by the year and month per unit.

So, if you want to flavor a bit of history, come join us.

All the best

you'll also get better immersion (our goal). notice there are no icons in any of the pics. with historical skins, you have to ID planes and units based on there appearance not some big giant stupid icon floating over the plane.

i mean, with icons, why bother to put skins on them at all? the icon says it all. immersion killers, they are.

Other then coops here are some servers that I highly recommend:

Zekes_vs_Wildcats
GUTS_GLORY_WW1
Spits_vs_109s
Winds_of_War
HISTORIA

Pretty much all these servers have dedicated comms like Teamspeak. Join them and have a blast. And of course I would suggest you look for a squad. But in doing so be sure to pick one that best suits your personality. Many squads will recruit anybody as long as they have a pulse so they can have many members. These are the ones you should stay away from. Be patient.

Thanks to everyone. It looks like I can get what I want from IL2 online now. Special thanks to Monguse for the link to the Megamission video. I will save that longside the FW190 'Requiem' video I downloaded first time I played IL2 and still kept re-playing even when I no longer had IL2.

I will see you all online very soon.

I feel that you need to participate in online campaigns either DCG controlled or SEOW controlled. However, you will need squadron membership, to ensure that you are fit for a serious mission, and able to bring back your aircraft to the base. Some pointers you can find in my sig.

Mega Missions look too cool for school.

64 player coops are orgazmic.

just to clearify, there are no AI planes in Mega missions. AI planes cheat and they follow predictable behavior. what makes the Mega missions so fun is all the planes you'll meet are people of all skills as well as squads of all skills.

we're trying to be like those well organized civil war reenactors that dress up, go out in a big field and shoot blanks at each other, only we are sitting at home in our pajamas instead.

How I get in on these megamissions and when is the next one? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Howdy Havok.

Next one is in May probably the third week.

The start times of these missions is Saturdays around 3:00 PM NY time as it allows the British wing to join around 9:00 PM (their time) and the (Axis and Allied) Italians around 10:00 PM or so their time.

However and this is still under some consideration. There is a possibility of a couple of US servers hosting these mega missions in the evening US time zone.

Since the megamissions are still in their infancy organizationally speaking, the Allied contact is myself and the Allied home page is on the Winds of War server. I'm sure at some date there will be a Home of sorts.

Currently participants of three US/UK servers participate Uk Dedicated, Winds of War and 22GCT with the following participatory squad tags:

TX
=TgD=
FA
-=FA=-
VMF215
[BFs]
RAF23
312

_1SMV (Italian)
22CGT (Italian)
150GCT (Italian)

NNFL (French)

and other virtual pilots without squads

Again if anyone is interested, PM me either here on in the HL lobby.

By the way, there is a possibility of, Pacific and Eastern Front Megamission.

All the best

Totally agree with Monguse! Megamission are the best way to play IL2, waiting for a real massive cooperative.
We have had great fun there! Historical SUPERB skins by Abraxa, Monguse and Kristorf for the Air War Italy 1944 - 1945; real italian, american and brit virtual pilots (and not only); massive bomber formations and great discipline with fighter squadrons escorting bombers....all boxed and all humans. <span class="ev_code_yellow">Fantastic!!!!!</span>

Here, for ex., the historical ANR skins by Abraxa and Ferdinando D'Amico we MUST use in this type of game:
