I was in Krakow last autumn, and wanted to see this museum, but due to lack of time, we had to skip it

Definately worth a visit as is the Military Museum in Warsaw.

Grrr... that's another one I miss for the same reasons, this month for the second time.

Last summer just by looking across the metal fence, I saw a WW2 airplane outside in the open air that resembled a Yak, but no idea what type. Do you happen to know, what type of Yak plane that might be?

Yakovlew Yak-9P from 1 Pu┼"Ük Lotnictwa My┼"║liwskiego (1st Pursuit Regiment) 1947 - 1950. The camul***e is a bit wrong in details.
