I've always been more interested in propellor driven aircraft games but was thinking of getting a modern jet fighter to try out. I'm hoping to get Lock On when it comes out but was wondering if anyone could recommend a good title in the meantime. I did briefly have a copy of Janes F18 a couple of years ago but found it so complicated I got rid of it. Any suggestions of a game that is a bit easier to get your head around.

Eurofighter typhoon is a decent "easy" jet game - it's a bit arcadey, but it's pretty and has a good dynamic campaign. Should be cheap now too. You get to go guns guns guns a lot too, since missiles have low effectiveness so as to make the game more fun. They work, but only if you get launch parameters perfect. Doesn't have many keys to remember either.

Flanker 2.0/2.5 - it's complex, but just flying is not much trouble. Plus it's the predecessor to LOMAC, so you should be well set up for Lock on when it comes out.

If you only want to fly jets, grab X-Plane (www.x-plane.com (http://www.x-plane.com)) and download your favourite plane. Probably some of the best available flight dynamics in this game, just no actual combat. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Don't get F18-Operation Iraqi Freedom. I've had a look at the demo, and it's a joke. Looks like possibly one of the worst, most out-dated jet games ever made.

how do you get operational parameters perfect then as the meteors do seem insanely innacurate for an up to date missile? are medium ones more accurate?

ef typhoon is great fun missions are kept varied and has some interesting twists and im only on about the second day or so flying!

To use meteors, close to about half of their maximum range. Nothing in the game hits at maximum range. The missile flies for some distance before it starts homing, so lead the target a little. Fire two per target, about 10 seconds apart. You should get 60% - 80% hit rate. Oh, and extending the missile range by going supersonic makes them less accurate since they get a larget turning circle! This is true for most missiles in the game.

ASRAAM is the most effective AA missile in the game. Use it from well inside range, preferably right up your target's tailpipe. Launched on someone's six at half range, you'll get a hit 95% of the time.

The enemy's missiles are just as inaccurate as yours too BTW. You can escape them all the time, unless they are coming in from all around you so you can't beam them all!
