Hello again!

I've decided to take the plunge and teach myself CEM. I've read Vulgar's guide (and rather enjoyed it). Now, when I looked at my current keyboard layout, I found that most of my keys are already doing something, and couldn't see a way to remap stuff so that everything flows nicely.

I was hoping somebody who uses CEM now would either tell me here or PM me how they have all their CEM keys mapped out so they co-exist nicely with the default keys.

I'm using a Logitech Force Feedback 3d (crappy-*** stick... but what can ya do) so I only have 1 slider (and it's being used for throttle now).

Thanks a ton for the help in advance! And wish me luck with the CEM!

Ronnie

I would suggest you get an X45 stick. It is relatively inexpensive and extremely programmable. Drop that keyboard if you really want to get into it. Of course you dont have to but it is nice.

I plan on getting an X45 a few months from now (being an unemployed university grad sucks) when the cash flow increases (if it does). So, seeing as how that is not possible at the moment, any suggestions for keyboard mappings?

Thanks,
Ronnie

When I disigned my X45 profile (Hazardscript) I thought carefully about this. The best way I figured was to set up a "key+SHIFT" for up or increase and "key+CONTROL" for down or decrease. Works pretty well, and as long as you remember which key is which control, you'll always know how to get up and down as well.

Hope this helps. You can download my Hazardscript profile from my webpage, open it in notepad, and see what buttons I chose, and start from there.

well Ihave my views on my stick so i used Delete & end for super charger next/previous speed.

since throttle is on my stick too i remapped the number keys to prop pitch , 1+ 10 % 2 =20% & so on. i'm no expert so i'm sure there are better ways but just thought i'd let ya know in case it's useful or gives you a better idea.

For prop-pitch set the +/- keys on the numpad to step it up and down (5% increments -> finer control). If you fly Russian planes you'll also need +/- for mixture and supercharger next/previous. However, the latter two are not used as often so anywhere will do.

Now, this is nowhere as good as having your pitch on a rotary knob on an X45, but it will tide you over till the cash is available. BTW, someone around here had a link for refurbished X45's I think, only $40, might be worth a look.

I use throttle on the stick and also on keyboard

throttle is keys 1- 0
pitch is keys SHIFT + 1 - 0
mixture is keys CTRL + 1 - 0

also set up the - and + keys to work in the same way, so three functions assigned to each key.

So just using the 38 basic number/letter keys (not including F keys, or <@:{} numpad, etc) you have 3 X 38 == 114 keys.

Thats plenty for me to panic and flap around the keyboard.

I also use the Shift+key for up/increase and Ctrl+key for down/decrease. I got tired of using Ctrl+NumPad +/- for mixture and decided to assign the arrow keys to them. I use up/down for mixture steps and right/left for supercharger stages.

For prop control I use 1,2,3...0 and for mix Shift+0, etc.

I'll be getting a HOTAS stick though soon so I hope I can lay the keyboard to rest. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif

Just a thought, you wanted to keep as much of the default as possible, right?

How about creating an "engine management consol" using
Insert/Delete = Increase/Decrease Pitch
Home/End = Increase/Decrease Mixture
PageUp/PageDown = Wep/Radiator

You could then use W (and Q if you like) to toggle (or Zoom In/Out) FOV

I've found it useful to use |,1,2,3...0 for quick Pitch control (instead of Shift + 1,2...etc) and -/= for Increase/Decrease pitch for fine adjustment (I also have throttle on a slider and I don't really need those keys for anything else)

Work's for me but I do get shot down a lot...
