Hello

I'm currently running a ATI Radeon 4650 on 9.10 Drivers, i had to use these older drivers due to problems with "blocky" text and other graphics issues if i used newer drivers.

I'm thinking about upgrading to the ATI Radeon 5850 in the near future.

The 4650 is a good card, but it gets "bogged" down when there is alot of action......i'd just like a card with more power.

I was wondering if anybody else is using the ATI 5850 card to play IL" 1946 and if so are you having (or had)any problems with drivers ?...

My OS is windows 7 64Bit.

I'd hate to spend alot of money on one of these 5850 cards and then find that it won't work with IL2 1946..

Any advice much appreciated...

thanks.....

What processor are you using?

IL2 slowing your computer down is usually due to the processor that can't handle all them things happening all at the same time.

Not sure about the new card.. But read this for how to go around the ATI bug.. I had the same problem

I'd like to stay with an ATI card if possible as i also play Silent Hunter 3/4 and this game seems to like the ATI graphics card.

Il2 1946 seems to prefer Nvidia cards, i have had to alter the config in IL2 to make the ATI card work better.

IL2 plays well untill i use 1680x1050 and then the game starts to stutter. I need to use this resolution because i have a 22 wide screen monitor.

Any lower resolution and the aircraft look out of proportion.

Would there be any benefits in spending alot of money on a ATI 5850 card in terms of FPS..

Regards...

I have a 5850 and it works perfectly. Use the newest 10.4 driver and just install the OpenGL from 9.10 in the IL2 directory.

You probably won't see any FPS improvement, but you should be able to up the resolution and AA/AF without taking an FPS hit. Should be worth the upgrade, but I'd wait till the blocky text issue is fixed (the workaround does not work for some people) and try to save for a 5870 in the meantime.

Up until now i have always used Nvidia cards, however i have to say that i have been impressed with the ATI 4650 card.

Silent hunter 4 looks superb with this card, which is why i would like to stay with ATI. Generally the game plays very well too, however it do's slow down on occasion.

If i only played IL2 then i'd probably buy a Nvidia card, however i never managed to get Silent hunter to work reliably on Nvidia.

So i have a bit of a dilema Nvidia or ATI ?.

I'll ask people on the Silent hunter forum how well the Nvidia 285 card would enable me to play SH4 ?.

For you IL2 guys......What sort of performance would i obtain if i used a Nvidia 285 card with IL2 ?.

I live in the UK and both these cards are very expensive....so i know my questions might be a little difficult to answer....but i just don't want to waste £300.

Now i have a 22"WS monitor, i have to use my native resolution of 1680x1050 inorder for IL2 to look right...

Just a couple more questions....

miatacol......what sort of frame rates are you getting with the 5850 ?.

Urufu_Shinjiro...Does the 5870 offer alot more performance then the 5850 ?, and what do you think to the specs of my computer ?.......i've played IL2 on alot less in terms of hardware..

Thanks everybody for you replies...

Both are great makes. Check the benchmarks on review sites and buy the card you ge the best bang for buck with, regardless of manufacturer http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The 5970s are out now. Might want to check those out.

I'm using the 4770 and I'm getting excellent performance out of it, though the rest of my system gives it plenty of breathing space to work with. The only limitation is that it has 512 of GDDR-5 memory, however the only place where that might have an impact is in my installation of FSX, since I run tons and tons of scenery and weather addons, as well as complicated add on aircraft, all at the same time.

have you seen the price of those things?
look here:

It just recently came out. Give it a month or two, new cards will yet again be released, and the 5970's price will be halved...! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The 5700s and 5800s can now be had for less than $300. That wasn't always the case.

Hello

The 5970's are way way to expensive....

I'm hoping that a 5850 will suffice, at a push i might even consider the 5870....but only if it offers me excellent performance in both IL2 and silent hunter 4...

Sounds like your 4770 would do the trick, for a fraction of the price...

My 4650 is good, but it just can't handle 1680x1050 resolution and the HSFX 4.11 perfect scenery mod without a stutter....

If i drop the resolution, then the game FPS is alot better, but the aircraft look like they have been "stretched" on my 22" WS monitor depending on which angle you look at them.

I need that 1680x1050 resolution !!!!..

cheers...

Open your CCC and go to 3D settings, and click <All>. Scroll down to the bottom and click to enable the "Triple Buffering" checkbox at "OpenGL Settings". Make sure you also have the "Wait for Vertical Refresh" slider set to the rull right at "Quality", as this works in conjunction with triple buffering in OpenGL.

This eliminated all stutters for me and the game runs very smoothly now. I'm also running in Perfect Mode at 1680 x 1050.

I have the 5850 but havent got the time to play Il2 with it much so far. I never got any good fps with it on opengl + blocky text and problems.

Tried directx instead.

OpenGL perfect black death typical 7-15 fps, openGL excel. 15-25 fps.

Directx typical 60-150 fps and I can run i at 8X time speed at 60 fps. I must have some issue with openGL, more than some blocky text.

Don't waste your money going from one budget card (4650) to another (4770). If your going to upgrade go 5850 or better. The difference wouldn't be worth the money or the hassle.

I would perfer 5850 over my current 2 x 4770. opengl seems only support one card at a time. neither card, it's more than enough fast. blocky text problem is my only complain for now.

got a 3870 for my older system, crash within il-2 game. not sure is it hardware or driver problem. later exchanged it to a 9800gtx. 4770 xfx is soild card under comparsion, free from hardware defect.

At the moment i'm leaning towards the ATI Radeon 5870...

However it worries me alot when guys are saying that their only getting 15 to 25 FPS when playing in open GL on IL2, especially when your considering the price of the 5850/5870 cards...

My 4650 has been a very stable and reliable card and would play the stock IL2 4.09 with perfect settings easily in 1680x1050.

However when the game is modded up to HSFX 4.11, and is played in 1680x1050 resolution...i get alot of stuttering..

I don't have access to my computer because i work away from home. When i get back home i'll have to try and experiment, just wanted to get some feedback about the newer ATI cards when used with IL2...

Cheers...

Don't get so hung up on other people's negative experiences. They may not be giving all the pertinent information that explains their issues. Do your own research and find out for yourself.

As well as being my personal favorite place to shop for hardware, Tiger Direct (http://www.tigerdirect.com/indexus.asp?SRCCODE=WEBGOOTD&cm_mmc_o=mH4CjC7BBTkwCjCECjCE) is an excellent starting point to make comparisons and find out everything you need to know to make the wisest possible purchasing decisions.

Besides, I'm using the "lowly" Radeon HD 4770 and I'm getting a consistent 60fps at 1680 x 1050 in perfect mode, while using 4x anti-aliasing, ansiotropic filtering, and refresh sync. This little GPU is well suited to the rest of my system, an attribute I carefully considered for all the components of my latest rig.

S!

5850 is a good card http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif And ATI is working on a fix for IL-2, so we have to wait a bit. They have acknowledged the issues as can be seen in 10.4 release notes http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Hi Gunnergolly. How you match your enabled mods have a huge impact on your framerates as well. I've been bogged down big time a few times because of having too much mods enabled, or poorly matched mods at that. On some maps it was so bad that I got lower framerates than guys running rigs much slower than mine.

Just go ahead on the 5850 man. Unless IL-2 is the only game you will ever play, there's no real reason why you should stick to Nvidia only. Both 5850 and 5870 is much faster than all the previous Nvidia cards, the only cards that match them now is the GTX470 and GTX480, which both cost an arm and a leg right now.

You might want to consider an X4 proc as well since 5850/5870 are fast cards with high proc demands. I used an E8500 proc on a 4850X2 card earlier and I had to overclock that CPU quite a bit before the rig performed as it should. Switching to a Quad made a big difference with that kind of GPU power in my rig.

Right now I'm running a Q9550, 5870 1GB with 4GB ram and my framerates always stay around 60FPS with Vsync and triple buffering on perfect landscape. Frames obviously goes higher when I turn Vsync off but then tearing becomes an issue.

All you need to do if you experience problems is to drop the atiogllxx.dll 9.10 file in your root folder and set your config.ini to match ATI specs. It's nothing to it really.

Hello

I think i'll probably go for the 5850, just because in my opinion it offers better valve for money. Maybe my CPU would be to much of a bottle neck for the 5870 ?..

The 5870 cost quiet a bit more money in the UK then the 5850 and i've read that some 5850's can be overclocked up to 5870 speeds...

I would only play IL2 1946, Silent hunter 4, and microsoft flight simulator, so as long as my system can play these titles i'd be happy...

Is it possible to overclock my AMD Phenom™ II X2 545 Processor and would there be any benefits ?....

Would changing to a X4 processor also require a change of motherboard ?......Sorry if that is a stupid question but it's just so i know if i ever consider changing my CPU in the future.

If ATI are addressing the known issues with IL2 then that is a good thing and i'd be happy to wait a little longer and just use the atiogllxx.dll work around for now...

Other then low FPS when trying to play the game in 1680x1050 with the HSFX 4.11 perfect scenery mod, i've been happy with my ATI card (After using Nvidia cards for many years)...

When i get home i'll just experiment a little more..

Cheers for your replies...
