I presume IL2 is the best combat flight sim for high alt level bombing but do any other games model it any way satifactorily...?I know theres a Wellington and Halifax on the drawing board over at the popular mods site but would love to have a go on these aircraft right now ....Does Strike Fighters model level bombing?(There are many WW2 heavy bomber mods for it but if you can only drop bombs in 'manual/fighter bomber mode then thats pretty lame )How about Microsoft CFS3?(I had it installed but needless to say it never got too much use -Ive actually forgotten bu think again there was no modelling of the bomb sight)Just curious what else is out there if anything for the high alt level bombers...Thanks.

"B17 The Mighty Eighth" is as good as if not better than il2 for level bombing, it's where i cut my teeth with the Norden sight. I would still play the 2-3 hour long missions now if i could get it to work in XP. Check it out if you can get a copy, it's like gold dust nowadays. The best part about it was you could fly from all positions, or as fighter escort/intercept, and you could manage a whole squadron, including aeroplane repairs, crew replacements, complete target routes, and so much more!

That is one game that needs to be remade.

I'll never forget the satisfaction of flying through flak into the target twice due to bad cloud cover on the first run, switching to target camera, and then watching the target get destroyed by 100,000lbs of bombs, as i turned for home knowing that my squadron completed the mission with 100% accuracy, with recon photos to prove it afterwards...

Oleg should take a leaf out of their book for offline immersion....

Other than B17, i'd say stick with il2. If you want to get together online for a few bombing runs look for me on HL or PM me on here....i've had some really good experiences in the level bombers in this game, when i've flown them correctly, and my bombsight accuracy is at a goodish level now.

The huge difference with IL2 was Oleg insisted that individual AI bombers should ahve individual flight mpdels and AI controls.

This means massed bomber streams can be quite realistic in IL2 ... however at a huge hit on frame rates.

+1 on B-17II for bombing including the navigation up to target. It's a whole level more serious than IL2 if you do it
yourself and still the Norden there is not completely full-real. I knew the consultant, my B-17II box is autographed
by his WWII photo there. Danjama, do you remember vonTech at the Delphi FSF? That's him!

B-17 II - The Mighty Eighth is an excellent study sim of B-17 management. It even models wind drift effects on navigation and bomb runs quite nicely. On the other hand, the flight models of all the other aircraft you can fly are very ordinary in my not very expert opinion.

From a pure high altitude level bombing in B-17s perspective, I'd rate it better than IL2. For a well rounded multi-player and single-player capable package, IL2 wins hands down.

Edit: ...just remembered, B-17 also has a nice easter egg on a channel coast beach. Any remember seeing it? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Was it a flying saucer and some aliens?

I can't remember.

For sure the fighter models mostly suck! BIG time...in fact the only plane i could get any sensible flying in was the FW190 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif And it's not like i didn't know how to fly the things, i was being gentle and co-ordinated, the planes just insisted on spinning like ballet dancers...it was a shame really. Energy retention was also porked. Nothing like il2 on the fighter side of things.

It's only good for playing at B-17 crew really though even the B-17 FM isn't what it should be.
The flak experience from bomber crew POV is the best I've seen.

I would love to see the concepts of that one actually developed and finished including 1st person crew.

They (shockwave) were remaking it back in 2005/2006 but it think it was dropped.

Danjama go into your B-17 folder and double click on the icon B-17game. That loads it in XP and runs without problems as long as the graphics drivers are compatible.
