Mr Maddox sir,

If the P-51D comes out in a free add-on, I cannot really see any paid-for add-on being commercially viable.

Once shipping, packing, and all the other expenses are factored in, and taking into account that (given a look at the viewing stats for il2skins.com show that around half of those online at any time there are Americans) it would be unlikely to ship much in the US market which UBI clearly values so much if the P-51D was already released.

Also, if pay-for packs do come out, will they ship EVERYWHERE that FB went (and would we get it within a week or two of each other, instead of 3-6 weeks like for FB)? I ask as places like NZ (where I am) tend to be ignored if they won't make much money for the group marketing it (in this case read UBISoft), and we took 5 weeks to get FB (Australia took 3-4 weeks) which is VERY annoying.

Surely such a pack would need a large number of planes and new maps to sell (essentially how many view what FB was/is). Since it seems the core market is the US and their only interest appears to be the Pacific or Western Front (therefore recreating something already done over and over again), would that not go against the spirit of IL-2 & Forgotten Battles (namely battles not already flogged to death by every other flight sim ever made).

Please do not interpret this as a whine. I love IL-2 & FB but I'd just like to have it clarified where this series is heading, and whether everyone will get it when it gets there.

Great program. Please don't stop. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Regards,

Owl_NZ.

At the start of WW2 the German army lacked experienced anti-aircraft gunners. The average gunner was so bad that the USSR decided to help them out. They did it by forcing some of their pilots to fly I-153 flak magnets. These planes were slow but very sturdy. This allowed German anti-aircraft gunners to get a large amount of target practice on a relatively small number of planes. Thanks to the Soviets help, by the end of the war the German anti-aircraft gunners were amoung the best in the world.</center>

If there is some problems getting the patch ready in due time its better to be known - all the whining about patch dont exactly make these forums better - Too much about not getting info on patch development and too little actual ac or sim talk.

Ok....Patch is closer and addons will be 'Pay for' and free, and 'pay for' will include other content. Gotta admit I don't really know much more than I did before. Must be a language problem. Hope Oleg doesn't get any ideas from the cost of the "Zero Addon" for CFS3 that costs $40 for one aircraft.....Imagine what a B17 would cost.

XyZspineZyX
07-09-2003, 02:40 PM
I'm for a bomber addon.

I'd pay for bombers: pe2/3, b17, bf110, ju88, a20 -- the He111 was a good start!

I understand the work involved of multi-crew, etc... and this would be warranted, especially for our Forgotten Wars Virtual War, where we make ground attacks, bombing runs a higher priority than a fighter kill.

Not sure if I would pay for more fighters, especially this SWOL types - I like to fly 1941-43 time period personally and would love to see FB be a good bomber sim with fighters used to support/intercept them.

That is my idea of a good ww2 flying sim http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ahh yes!! Thanks for the update Oleg. For what has to be the most anticipated patch for any game I have ever played online. And thankyou for sticking with the original plans of letting the P-51D be a free addition to the game.

So, why can I not paste cryllic characters into my post? I had a post in Russian, but can't get it to work /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif I know that the forum supports the characters, and I can see them when I paste them in, but when the post is added, it is encoded from English text. I thought it would be nice to say thanks to Oleg in Russian, since he takes the time to speak to us in English, even at the risk of being taunted about poor English from the babies here. Help?

It's possible to order it in russia from a couple websites. I have forgotten the websites names however. I'll ask to the person who did it for me.

Edit I checked it, several persons bought it from ozon.ru and got it fine. But there are delays. I did that too but with delivery to someone who's got it in Russia and whom my friend will meet at a wedding in Minsk and bring it back to France. I'd gladly offer to order another one but the wedding is in a couple days and we don't have time to order it again. And the deluxe version is nowhere to be found in the Yoshkar Ola area (or so I'm told).

It is kind from Oleg to post news about the progress of the patch. I myself have made some very critical comments about the patch issues. My concern was not about Oleg, personally, so I do not see a reason for an apologize either.

My comments were about the fixes. We know that IL-2 received a multitude of patches, but it still suffered from some flaws/bugs. All I am hoping is that FB won't end up the same way..

I am just hoping that the patch will fix the most concerning issues with flight models, damage models, possible cockpit mishaps and game functionality (sound and online performance, for starters)

It is very sad that keepers of good servers have to limit the selection of available aircraft due to their issues. Afterall, the planes were put there so that people could fly them. However, realism requires that some planes are restricted off from a server. Conclusion: there are issues in Forgotten Battles which hinder it's realism.

When Oleg's team eventually (see, I still have belief) releases a bug-free version of Forgotten Battles, it will be a day long remembered; as a feather to their hats.

I've already said thanks once in this thread but I'll say it again. Thanks.

My guess then is that we are getting a patch with a couple planes in it. Then we will probably get a free downloadable pack of planes (including P-51D). Then there will be the paid for add-on, probably themed (as I posted about a month ago, which is my only concern). I will gladly pay for an add-on to FB, my only concern is that it will be a 1946 type themed add-on, in which case it would be about the ONLY add-on I wouldn't buy. Its been done before and not very interesting IMHO. I was really disappointed to hear that BF1942's second expansion was themed this way, the first one was excellent and immersive. Still, I am glad to hear that there is a payware add-on in the works, that hopefully means much more content for the greatest sim ever created. With the incredible amount of planes in the works, I can't see how they will/would divide them all up. Should be awesome whatever it is. Thanks again.

The best compromise should be a Med theatre. It would allow for the US & UK stuff under development, bring the Italian and Romania a/c addons into the war, and not be repeating map area already flogged to death in every other sime every made.

IL2 & Forgotten Battles sold because it is so good, and because it was about battles we hear and see little about.

The Med, Italy, Yugoslavia, large tracts of the Russia area, Manchuria, China and South East Asia are all chronically underdone. Not the same old dross again PLEASE!

We need "Forgotten Battles", not "Western Europe Battles #824".

Perhaps a poll on the next theatre or on what packs should be about would be a good idea? Just make sure it's one vote per person so we get accurate results. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

It sold good becuase of the graphics and realistics feel, i think the theater held the game back a bit in sales

The theatre held it back in North American sales for sure, but enhanced its European sales at the same time. Not a 1 to 1 trade but its a tradeoff never the less. I'm less concerned about theatre personally than I am about ever improved physics and flight models.

Although I would prefer a theatre never done before because of the novelty of it. Mainly in the Western Front and the Pacific theatre being overdone.

I'd probably be more drawn into the actual theatre and maps if the campaign design impressed me, but it doesn't as I'm a hard gamer to please. The only campaign that ever impressed me for a CFS game style was Falcon 4.0 after all the community updates. You never knew what was going to happen on your next mission.

I understand Western Front and pacific Theatre are overdone, but with IL-2/FB engine i believe it's the 1st and only in the market.

lastly, I'm ok with other theatre. As long as from Ubi or Oleg.

It is very good news about the pay for CD. Nobody can afford to develop free forever so if one CD works out then perhaps there will be more and enough to keep FB on top for years to come. Maybe 1C will grow, hire people just for addons while the core group presses onward. I'm sure there are people who would jump at the chance.

Will I be collecting addons for this sim for a long time? I hope so. I hope FB fills the prop warbird niche so well than M$ has to do jets or go =totally= arcade! LOL!

I am sure that the I Hate Mustangs crowd would buy a P51 addon just to be able to shoot Mustangs flown by others online. You would have to have the model to fly on the server, no? Is your major hate stronger than my seen too many already boredom? I'd rather have a Tempest, it's got better guns. Run little FW!

I beg to differ......a paid add-on with more scenery and a few planes would sell like hotcakes.... I am a huge dfan of the P-51 but dont think for a minute that the future of commercially viable add ons for this sim will hinge on the Pony... in fact I would dare to say that giving away the Pony would actually be the smartest move. Eveybody wants it...and if they had to pay for it,though most of us would, if we got it for free we would be more than willihg to pay for other planes and scenery.

Take the time to get the product done right.
The heck with patches. I am all for paying for it as an addon to FB.
To many people are pushing for a quick patch, which only leads to more patching month by month because they patch it for now and people will still not be satisfied, then they demand another patch and so on.
If they just took the time to get things done in the end more people would be pleased with the game.
save patching for the little things, not for the larger picture and prospective.

I'd rather pay and play than keep downloading patches, burning them to cd just to have to keep doing that over and over and over. Let microsoft be the patch people their latest product stunk and still does due to pushing it out too soon and patching trying to please the whining crowd.

I do believe that the base sim needs to fly right before addons would do any good. Addons should not be necessary or they are not addons, yah?

It is a huge amount of work to make even one model right. Work should be paid for somehow in a way that rewards the workers well for good effort. Would I pay US$10 for just 1 good plane especially if I can pick and choose, not have to buy all? I think yes if the sim is kept alive and not abandoned... I don't want to invest in shelf-fillers!

Fair enough Bearcat99.

It's a catch-22 really isn't it. If they give it away free US sales would drop unless the addon was all about the US aircraft (B17, B24, P38 etc etc and Western Front), and if they hold it back to boost sales to the US (which appears to be UBI's preferred market) they get bad press for doing it that way and making them pay for it.

Guess they can't win either way. It's starting to look more and more like a pay-ware addon headlined by IL-2: FB, The Western Front.

In another post I noted that we have 32 unflyable planes in already. Many played major roles in the Eastern Front (88, Pe-2, Hs129, Tu-2, Su-2) but they don't seem to get a look in. That's the real shame. A pack making all the planes in FB already flyable would be very good IMHO.

Bring on the Med. That'd be great.

We really need some Friday polls again about what theatre and what packs etc.

Absolutely! Then all those that do not have the "pay for" addon will still be able to fly with those that do! Great idea! Now there is an addon I would gladly "pay for"!

MS does rely too heavily on downloadable fixes and patches. Funny thing is, though, that MSFS2002, while having tons and tons of third party support, it has yet to have a patch offered through MS. An actual fix-the-problems patch. And problems it has lots of.

Thank you a thousand times for your immense work and your immense generosity !
Actually this behavior of yours could almost be called revolutionary in this money greedy people exploiting capitalist western world most of us live in. Its the contrary of what MS does and i admire you for your absolute "chuzpe" and courage to do things your way.

I do sometimes have critized sharply aspects of your modelling (FW !, i am a Würgerwhiner !) but apart of those details i admire this monument of software you have created here. I am dealing with computers for more then 20 years and it is the most impressive piece of software i know. Its not perfect but its a living breathing universe to play and fly and meet friends (and shoot them down, lol).
Thank you a lot and by the way, if you ever should need some money, just ask, i would buy everything from Maddox, a free addon is wonderfull, a new scenario with more maps would be just lovely and willingly be honoured with my money.
Hey, why dont you recreate the whole WW2 airwar all over the world ? I buy all your addons and we all have a good time together for the years to come !!

Yours,

Some people don't read so well or stop too soon.

Look for the post Oleg made later. There will be a pay for addon with different content after that.

Pretty sure you won't have to have that one, just nice to. Better than ending FB just to have a way to get paid and survive, no? Not like sims where users make whatever they want to keep it growing so either 1C gets paid for work or they must stop, which we don't want do we?

When you die during "dogfight" (IL2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles) you're able to restart and rejoin the game. But this feature isn't implemented in the "Co-op Mission"! That's really bad! Will there be a patch to solve this problem?

Thanks and with best regards
