View Full Version : Why don't we get realistic weather?

well, why don't we? In IL2 (original), we used to get pretty lousy weather which was more realistic. Especially online as well - I prefer to fly bombers however, I usually have NO cloud cover (which is a bomber's best friend) and am therefore a sitting duck to/from the target.

FB has the same weather as IL2..it's just if the server doesnt use it then... Why not make your own server? You ever try flying in a Thunderstorm at dusk in Moscow? It is wild.....

The problem with super realistic weather is that it really eats your frame rates.

Still...

T-storms are pretty cool....

Heh, they talk about new sims like FS2004 being able to download global weather data. IL2 has had global weather for two years already. When it rains in Smolensk... it rains on you.

i think it was on slammin's server that i encountered super overcast with thick snow and heavy turbulence rite off the deck. talk about immersion! it was really difficult getting a bead on a bandit with all that turbulence, but it made a kill even that more satisfying.

once above the clouds, it was smooth as silk, sun shinning....but then diving back into the soup after a bandit...wow!

i've only encountered these settings online a handful of times and i believe they offer, at least to me, the closest feeling of flying on the russian front that i'll ever encounter. gave me the shivers... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Indeed,I'd love to see more servers as you discribe'm rangoon. I saw a same server. it had P 47's Lagg,Yaks and all and it was a real mess. but once you climbed up above the sky you noticed the games's potential. It was cool to say the least. You saw all sorts of fighters comming out of the clouds/diving in like dolfins, comming up and jumping a bit then diving right in. It gives good atmosphere. Only I dislike thunderstorms as No one really ever flew in them. You'd have to be a ******* bomber pilot or fighter pilot to go up in a thunderstorm. your bombs'd be all of target!! a fighter would have no prey! because all the other people where clever enough not to come out.

I think it is very realistic.

Try flying only by instrument to target in no-visibility http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I'd be happy with snow and forcing max cloud detail for all players, clouds on medium show only half the clouds detailed clouds show with the same detail, so another words detailed clouds is a huge disadvantage.

All that cloud and weather effect will cause lagg on online servers.

Realistic weather in a combat Sim is still a year or two away. The reason that civil flight Sims like M$FS series and X-plane have superior weather effects is that they save processor power on not having DM and Ballistics models. M$FS focuses more on eye-candy and is less realistic, it just has some "canned" weather conditions that don't vary appreciably. X-Plane actually models the atmosphere w/ up and down drafts, thermals, and dynamic wind effects. However, X-Plane trades graphics for all this realism and even the latest versions of the game look very dated.

I think FB is a little better then Il-2, concerning modelling turbulence and rain/snow/hail/cats&dogs.

1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge,
ye shall be judged: and with what
measure ye mete, it shall be measured
to you again.

The weather is not realistic in my country either - it's SO cold! I like it better in FB.

I've had a couple of flights on greatergreen with good atmospherics (weather, time of day) but these servers are in the minority online. I agree it's a real immersion boost when it's not always midday with 30 mile vis and no clouds or turbulence.

Cheers,

To enhance weather reality I suggest that you:
- attach a hairdrier to your monitor
- place a heater at one side
- and a fridge at the other side

and use them when appropriate to simulate the effect you need.

Let's just hope that PC's are able to control other equipment soon. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
