View Full Version : I'm sick of oil on my Bf 109 windscreen.

I'm tired of attacking bomber formations with my Bf 109 and getting a ton of oil over my windscreen if a gunner gets me. I admit they aren't as adept as they were pre-patch with their sniping skills but what's with every other bullet washing my screen with oil?

I can attack from all different angles and if a bullet hits me then 50% of the time it's in the engine and poof there goes my visibility.

When you attack bombers with a 109 do the gunners throw balloons full of oil at you?

I'm wondering why this is? Ok so the Messerschmitt Bf 109 has an inline engine but so do many in the game and I have only noticed this with the 109. So why is it that this only happens to me in this plane?

Try attacking 4 - 8 bombers and most of the time you will eventually get "oiled" over no matter how good you are or how hard you try to stay away from a gunners aim.

Maybe someday we'll get the device 109 pilots had to hand pump fuel onto the windscreen to cut any oil buildup.

But I wouldn't hold your breath any time soon.

Happens to me too with The Mk1 Hurricane.
Probably serves me right though for going up against bombers in that old crate.
Still I did get me a Pe8!

The 109's are the only ones in the game that get oil on the wind screen. No?

I cannot imagine these were the only planes that had this happen?

Happens in La s as well but i get it most often in 109s, i read it's because the oil tank is right in front of the windscreen. There was a device (as mentioned) for squirting fuel on th windscreen to clear off the oil, but that was installed just for the normal everyday leaks.

You really have to b careful taking the 109s at bombers that's why I like mk108s or gunpods so i can take 'em out quickly. For now if you have the light guns it's not a good idea to try for one kill in one pass or even to press your attacks for too long. You really have to jink a lot.

And i take hail mary long range mg shots at the gunners sometimes.

Very simple answer, don't get hit

Yes it's extremely frustrating in the 109.
But it' possible to avoid getting hit most of the time(although not always).
Fly 1000m above the bombers and when you get exactly over them roll over and dive down.
You are presented with the whole upper area of the bombers for a nice shot, your guns do more damage, you save ammo and avoid getting hit more often than not.
Errr, did I mention that this is very difficult in cockpit view?

You get Oil in glass in BF-109s, P-47s, IL-2s and Yaks.. In this order..

Meaning 109 this happen almost everytime you are hit, P-47 seldomly, IL-2s very rarely, and In Yaks Extremely rarely.. Guess Oleg modelled the clue in german BF-109 front glass, so the Oil is stuck there /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Get hit in your cooler, and gravity feeds it up, you see. Not a problem, that bullet hole in the armored glass is blocking out your gun sight, so you don't need to see anything.

Just behind the spinner (Bf 109 G-10 at least) is an oil tank with 50 l oil. Underneath the engine is an oil cooler. This gives that a large part of the frontal area of a 109 contains oil, when you get hit it gets messy.
I remember the early developing screenshots from UBI with arrows thru various parts of the airplane indicating bullet hits and the damage done. I think the damage model is accurate for a simulation of today. Still very frustating!

Along the lines of that "try not to get shot" idea, you might try not flying in a straight line!

I had this problem too! Ace bombers have ace snipers!

Now I go against avarge Bombers and dont have too much problems since I worked on tactics.

1. dont go near bombers if u are below their altitude unless u have great speed advantage.

2. If u drag behind bombers closing slowly= Scrap metal

3. dont fly in straight lines near bombers not even in a dive.

4 allways jink after your attack.

5 never stay and dogfight bombers arguing u want 2 in one pass.

So after your pass fly out of their gun range and maneuver
for a new pass with speed and the sun in your back if possible.

It takes time but as I see it its the only reasonable way to do it.? this way u can attack up to 16 bombers and sweep trough the formation.(at least once)

I remember a fw pilot who said he expected to get some hits everytime he attacked bombers.

It has to do with the very often discussed fact that the 109 series is clearly undermodelled in FB (I am getting flamed soon).

The "...device 109 pilots had to hand pump fuel onto the windscreen to cut any oil buildup.." has obviously not been correctly modelled in the simulation.

As you can see this device was of strategic importance and might have changed the course of the virtual war !!!

Yeah, there guns only blow you out of the sky on the first pass if you pull the trigger. Yes, definately undermodelled! Man, learn how to fly!

I thought I mentioned in my original post that I do jink and manouver and attack from high in the flanks and this still happens to me.

I have also read that some German pilots said that everytime they attacked a bomber formation they would always get hit by a few rounds.

Well considering that almost every other bullet hits my oil tank this happens too often and I think this is modeled wrong.

The oil in truth does seem overly dark and opaque, the smoke doubtfully making it so black. However, the windscreen design makes it more vulnerable to this then some IMLTHO. Flat as it is it would tend to be shed off slower hence as more is added it stays bad. Next time plan your attack angle and don't shoot to kill the plane, go right for the gunner...once you have a safe spot to shoot from have at it or better still, scream past firing then re-set up for your next run.

I'm no expert, but common sense is supposed to be common to us all.

lol - me too. The old "magic bb" always snakes around the cockpit and hits the oil line/pan/pump in front.

Follow the advice above when attacking bombers: use alt, speed and big guns.

Of course, you could fly a FW190 which is a teeny bit more robust than the Bf109. But hey, where's the challenge in that? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

thanks for sharing , but did you read master mariners post above ?

Just think of all the times you're not getting hit because the 109 is relatively small.

Hard to know how often 109s got oil on their windscreens from engine hits but I don't think IMHO that it should be changed just because it makes it difficult to attack bombers with the 109. It seems rather realistic to me...

I'm afraid I don't agree with you as I have read a quite a few reports of bomber engagements and none of them ever said they couldn't see out of the front due to oil. And most of them took several hits.

And considering it happens to me everytime it can't be realistic. I'm not arguing it shouldn't happen I'm saying it happens too often. I suppose I should just try flying backwards and have my MG and Cannon in the tail. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif I've had enough of this topic and shall never whine again, well almost never /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

If thats the case why can you park yourself behind anything other than an ace TB3 or Pe8 and pound them to the cows come home in an A8 without taking any serious damage ????

Surely if it is VVS bias the 190's would be crap as well but they are the best antibomber planes in the game.
