With the salinity of the water, what kept the deck guns and flak cannons from corroding when underwater? Was there some sort of sealant used? Were they plugged up? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

I believe they pluged them up, I'm not sure.

Yes they were plugged. If you look closely at some pics of deck guns you can see a string wrapped around the barrel that's tied to the plug.

But even if they were plugged, I would imagine that, with all the small moving parts and such, that corrosion was an issue with deck guns

One word.... Grease. Ask any of the bubbleheads, or even the tincan jockies, They'll remember next to cleaning and painting everything is sight, they will remember lubing every moving part on the armament religiously.

Correct, clean, lubed/greased during downtime (between engagements) crews had to keep there equipment in working order ready to use at anytime that goes for anything but for a Sub's its even more important.
