View Full Version : A SIMPLE new icon setting that would be nice to have

There are 3 icon types in game now, plus no icons.

I'd love to see a new icon type. All it would be is a single character instead of range. The color (team) would stay as it is now.

The possible characters to use are:

+

*

?

.

The idea is that a single character (small) would give friend or foe, and would also provide an improvement in observing planes against the ground. It would also mitigate some problems with LODs where planes totally disappear at some angles/ranges. Unlike all the other icons in game now, it gives no fantasy data (exact radar range data, auto plane ID, etc). It's JUST a small visual cue.

Riiiiiiiiight.... let me guess:

That 3rd one, the almost imperceptible . is what your enemies see of your plane?

It might be a good idea, but be sure all the symbols are equally visible (or invisible, as the case may be).

Read his post, he suggested possible types, colors remaining the same as now....So saying;

<span class="ev_code_RED">+</span><span class="ev_code_BLUE">+</span>
<span class="ev_code_RED">*</span><span class="ev_code_BLUE">*</span>
<span class="ev_code_RED">?</span><span class="ev_code_BLUE">?</span>
<span class="ev_code_RED">.</span><span class="ev_code_BLUE">.</span>
<span class="ev_code_RED">€</span><span class="ev_code_BLUE">€</span>

They'd be the same for both sides........Why would they not?

As LEBillfish said, all planes would have identical icons. The only difference would be the color based on side. I listed possible ascii charaters it could be (since we know icons are set up to show ascii). The idea would be to try different types til you get a balance between usefulness and having them look nice. Note that up close they would virtually disappear under the plane you are looking at.

The reality is that no icons is not "full real" due to limitations of monitors, and some broken LODs, etc. We have all experienced it, some planes completely disappear at certain angles even within shooting range.

OTOH, icons set to the least offensive version (range), are still ugly as hell (reducing immersion), and in addition give information that we honestly shouldn't have---perfect radar rangefinding.

By having an icon mode that only shows a single ascii character we get:

The IFF benefit of icons.

The improved tracking of contacts against the ground, particularly when due to game issues it becomes IMPOSSIBLE to do even if you could in RL (though it still requires actually looking for them since they are small)

We don't get:

Type ID

Radar rangefinding.

Big, ugly icons.

As long as they're the same, I'm with you.

Yes, it would make a big difference, and the explanation you give (a small visible cue, rather than a radar rangefinder) is the correct one!

I like this idea alot, sensible and surely relativley easy to do, and effective. nice one.

cheers fruitbat.

Tater, I think this is a good idea.

I want to start out by saying that I very much appreciate all the hard work that has gone into this sim. I fly it exclusively and enjoy the experience a lot. There is simply nothing out there that compares to the IL2 series for WW2 flight. I don't think this is stated often enough. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

BUT, there is always room for improvement.

Unfortunately, this Icon topic has been discussed half to death just under a year ago if I recall correctly. There were many good suggestions on this and some very similar to yours.

As a result, it was completely and totally ignored by the people who could make it happen.

Why such a simple suggestion could not be implemented is beyond me. Especially since icon types are easily changed by the user. There should have been a number of different icon types introduced simply for experimentation purposes. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

We can only hope...

Now, why would they igonore "good suggestions", just because the topic was popular enough to draw a lot of posts, I ask you?

This was my pet request when I first came to the forums http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

I can't remember how many times I asked for this http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif .

I wanted a box icon/symbol similar to European Air War: a constant size icon (a small square in the case of EAW) that would let you see enemy contacts at a realistic range given the limitations of the monitor.

Glad to see my record for getting peoples attention is as good as ever...

Very good idea that seems to be a nice sort of solution for crappy dot modelling.

I proposed this ages ago as well, time for a rehash is all.

BTW, didn't I post this in ORR? Odd.

nice idea. I'm not sure if team colors should be different since then you know if it's a friend or not before you can ID the plane... and the icon should be a color that would let you use the sun as an aid in sneaking up on people... like yellowish or something like that.

sudoku1941

...actually, why shouldn't the dot change color, according to the information it's supposed to impart?

Why not a neutral color...which, if you get close enough to it, turns either red or blue?

but, hopefully all the colors would be obvious enough to stand out from underlying terrain, since that's the #1 problem with the "invisispecks" we have now...

I'd be fine with any odeas regarding color. The primary reason I suggested team colors is that we know that the current icon system already does this.

That means that creating this type of icon suggested (ascii, using the sim's default icon color rules) would be very easy, indeed.

Yeah just for the hell of it better send this to Oleg.We might get lucky this time.

This would be sweet! I did something like this for LOMAC awhile back(as that game allows such simple editing) and it really boosted the immersion for me.

Yeah, I could easily see "full real" servers allowing "dot icons" since at gunnery ranges they'd be hidden under the target, and they'd barely be visible at the best of times.

Full real servers? The ones you need a pair of spare eyes, or a cracked video driver?
Surely that kind of icons can help in situations like this:

There is a similar mod for CFS3 that replaced the yellow brackets with a red dot. It worked really well and was far less intrusive than the full names. I definately think this is a top idea.

Thanks for the pictures, that is exactly what I was getting at.
I tend to think the best charaters would be either + or €.

Well.. Long time ago I tried to present this to the developpers, obviously to no success..

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/63110913/m/7811002983/p/1

Somebody proposed another solution, which can be implemented at the moment:
Setup the server so that all planes fly with void skin http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Honestly, I don't think somethink is gonna change http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif

Although I don't expect to see it happen, I am absolutely for it. It is a GREAT idea. If it was an optoin I would definitly use it.

I give a doulble thumbs up for the two gents who, on prior, the other here, have come up with the idea as I am too retarted to think of it myself

Yeah, it would be good indeed and highly useful.

I always wondered why there isn't an 'Icon off' value so the icons can disappear at x distance from you. That would also be a gem moi thinko.

Nice idea - I should email it to Oleg if I were you. What would be better is for them to fix the LOD issues in the first place but that patently isn't going to happen.

If you do email them, how about asking for external padlocks (F6/F7) to be disabled as a server option, too? That's another thing that gets on peoples tits that has never been sorted out either.
