Still using STEEL FURY

http://www.combatsim.com/printer.php?id=4905

Tried the evening melee. Shot at a tank which looked German, and set it on fire with arrowhead rounds, but I had to go right up to it to be sure I hadn't hit a T-60. Infantry running all over the place. Could not be sure if they were Sov or German. Finally my sight was shattered by a direct hit. The driver automatically backed up and got us out of the battle. I think it is pretty good. There has never been a more accurate T-34 simulator.

Thanks for the reminder about this one. Will give it a go.

Need something while waiting for T34 vs Tiger to show up...

Ditto but this one ought to be a good one, too, once the full version is released. Maybe this will be a vintage year for WWII armor sims?

Oh yea, even if I could not run the thing...I am eager and as T-34 vs. Tiger takes place in 44 this one looks like a good one for the mid-war armour. Plus as you guys report it shows off the shortcomings of the T-34 as well as its strong points.

This item makes a mockery out of the way the T-34/76 Model 1941 was handled in PANZER COMMANDER, PANZER ELITE modded, and RED ORCHESTRA. As a commander, you are stuck behind your sight. Soviet doctrine mandated their tanks fought "buttoned up" so you can't pop up to get a view through the hatch (if you do, nobody would be manning the gun). The sight is modeled very realistically with your mouse wheel perfectly used as the range dial. Scales are present for AP, HE, and the coax machine gun. Five rounds of arrowhead are provided for cracking the tough German mediums. You can even set delay on your HE rounds if you want. Smoke grenades are provided for emergency concealment (haven't figured out how to trigger them properly). The only criticism I can make is that there is no 360 degree rotation periscope for the commander so he could look around without rotating the turret. Retail version will have usable German tanks. Too bad you can't use the demo, joeap, it is really a tank lover's dream.

Is there a master list of commands anywhere? There are a few pointers at the beginning of the missions but otherwise I'm lost.

This sounds very awesome indeed, especially with useable German tanks right off the bat. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/metal.gif T-34 vs. Tiger is going to only have those two as useable tanks, any add-on's sound iffy from the interviews as they will be totally dependent on sales/demand. Right now they both sound like winners with space reserved on my rig. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

OK, I figured out that the T-34 is supposed to have a working periscope for the commander, but it doen't work in this demo---commands G, T/Y, O, and Num+/Num- are for it. I have had no luck with the smoke grenades---don't think they work either. Before you get going, go to the driver's position, and make sure the dunce doesn't have his hatch open. If you see a vehicle behind foliage, blow the greenery away with an HE round (you have 53 HE, 19 AP, and 5 arrowhead)---then plug them with AP---if you fire AP into the greenery it seems to be ineffective. Two ways you can tell a German tank which is sitting there doing nothing is dead (1) hatches all open, or (2) barrel of main gun depressed. I wasted some shots on KOed tanks. If you are in a tight spot while waiting for the main gun to be reloaded, spatter machine gun fire all over the enemy tank's mantelet to try to zotz his sight or just to raise a lot of smoke to blind him. Seems to work.

All commands are available in the readme which can be found in the Open/Docs file of the demo folder

I thought I read (unfortunately for a lot of folks) that the demo doesn't support Nvidia cards or did I just imagine that? Not a problem here though.

EDIT: Forget that idea I must have imagined it - thanks FritzGryphon for the correction!

Unless it was the ArmA demo I tried to run only to be told I was missing a DirectX 9c dll! There is apparently a Dec 2006 DirectX 9c update which fixes this. Anyone tried it? Sorry for the change of tack and I understand if the question is ignored http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif .

Works fine on Nvidia 7600GT. Ditto with Arma. Using Directx9c.

Speaking of a broken gunsight, it seems to happen every time one gets hit, damaging or not.

And tanks always burn the same way, too, and die on the very first effective hit. The penetration model seems nice, but there doesn't seem to be any hint of an internal damage model.

Just hit the very bottom of a road wheel on a Panzer, and it stopped and started burning.

You must be very fortunate, FritzGryphon. A Panzer III presented flank to me at, maybe, 400 meters, and I had the pierce him with several arrowhead rounds to set him on fire. I have been killed several times by a 50mm round right through the glacis plate. Since I do not know the range or the round type, I can't complain---yet. My T-34 has taken several hits without starring the gunsight. I have only had this happen once. The driver seems to go crazy when you enter a village---mine started driving into everything. I had to go external and, by frequently braking when he went nuts, was able to get out. This sometimes happens when I try to ford the stream in the night scenario, or when I try to bash through a stand of trees. This item is supposedly done by the same people who did Battlefront's T-72: BALKANS ON FIRE tank sim. It had some interesting bugs, but it was a hellishly detailed tank sim.

This is a worthy (and free) bash, F_IV. Give it a go.

The arrow ones don't work well for me, either. A halftrack took two of them, and some others I fired riccocheted.

Normal AP is 1 shot, 1 kill, though.

OK, I've found how to get the full range of sighting devices for the commander/gunner. First go to F2 for his position. Next hit Insert to get his sight view, and (this isn't in the directions) next hit M. You will have three views for the commander/gunner in M. Keep pressing the key to run through all of them: circular view small (telescopic sight next to gun), circular view large (periscopic sight on roof of turret---you can cover this with its lid by pressing G---you can enlarge the view to full screen by pressing on the right mouse button), rectangular view (this is the view out of the vision port on the left flank of the turret---when you are in the loader's position the view you have is that of the vision port on the right flank of the turret). Thus, the commander now has two sights for firing the guns as the historical commanders had---so if your telescopic sight gets starred, go to the periscopic sight on the roof and vice versa! Be sure to keep your periscopic sight covered (press G) until ready to use it. Good hunting.

You have to be at about 500 meters to kill with arrowhead. It was not any good at long range, but was better than regular AP close-in.

leitmotiv, good find, but can you get a 360 deg view with the periscope as could be done historically?

I am seriously going to find a friend with a newer computer and persuade him to let me try the demo out and keep it on the purchase list for my upgrade.

Last periscope mystery solved, joeap! Once you have gone to periscope by pressing M, you can now use it without turning the turret by pressing T/Y (as in the instructions)! Now you have a completely free periscope with a wide-angle view so you can scan all around your tank without turning the turret. If you want to quickly re-link the periscope to your guns, tap O (as in the directions), and your periscopic sight immediately locks back to the gun's direction. Now the T-34 is really in business!!!!

It's worthwhile, at the very least, as an excellent simulator of the T-34/76 Model 1941. You'll see how hard it was for the Sov tank commanders to try to command the tank and lay the guns. I am operating blind most of the time because, no matter how good the wide-angle periscope is, it doesn't give you the situational awareness of a free look out of the turret. I am getting the chop in almost every game I play because I can't see hidden German tanks. All this is ruthlessly accurate. When the retail item is released, we'll be able to compare the rather sobering experience of being a T-34 commander to that of being a Panzer IV long-barrel commander. At this period this version of the Pz IV was the queen of the battlefield. If the sim had been set in 1941, the T-34 would have enjoyed superiority.

Replayed T-72 Balkins on Fire demo today after not playing it for a bit... should have checked before speaking. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif

Well back to having a Cookout inside my T-34... a Well Done Burger anyone!
