0.50-in ammunition

28. 0.50-in ammunition was first issued to No. 2 Group for use in American aircraft on the 18th September 1942. The following types of 0.50-in ammunition were used:

AP, incendirary and tracer (day and night). Made-up belts consisting of 40 per cent AP, 40 per cent incendiary, 20 per cent tracer were issued to the group in March, 1943.

With the introduction of the Rose turret into No. 1 Group early in 1944, 0.50-in ammunition belted in the sequence 3 AP, 1 incendiary, was issued, together with supplies of tracer and API for introduction into belts under local arrangements which were:-

(a) 17th January, 1944. 3 AP, 1 incendiary, 1 night tracer.
(b) 10th February, 1944. Sequence changed to 1 API, 2 AP, 1 incendiary, 1 night tracer.
(c) 29th January, 1945. Sequence changed to 4 API, 1 night tracer.
(d) 30th April, 1945. Changed to 100 per cent API.
