Ok, apparently something happened to sandman's thread where no posts are visible and replies cannot be made so I decided to make another thread for him and all interested in the topic. Hopefully he'll find his way back here and repost his diagrams and videos and whatnot so we can get up to speed.

** NOTE ** We are not deranged maniacs looking for creative ways to kill people (at least...I'm...not...http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif) This thread is simply a discussion on the mechanics of an OTF (out the front) Switchblade similar to the one our beloved assassin Altair possesses and the attempts we've made to recreate them for the sake of entertainment/prop use/etc etc. Under no circumstances are we promoting the use of said mechanism in order to maim, dismember, murder, threaten, torture, poke and or taunt innocent civilians with http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif **

Ok, to get this thread started, I recently uploaded a short "build-through" of my lego blade which has improved since its last debut. That can be found here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHGpQ_Qw8Bw)

Other blade videos include the following:

the original shank by sandman0077 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfwAEinCeMk)

a blade by Othernamesweretaken (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3PwQdaVclE)

a blade by Thepieman07 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0niyBLyLFY&feature=related)

a nice in-depth explanation of a wooden blade on an elastic string mechanism by sirusccp (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqLDHGeB8lA&feature=related)

a similar lego blade by Hadenthegamer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fo59etKbo8I&feature=related)

WalkingDruids take on the blade using brick legos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fAzFgH5aew&feature=related)

A K'Nex blade by ultamentdark (probably the easiest way to make one) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JP82Tdb2GM&feature=related)

my second lego hidden blade (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIBoB_ErZCY&feature=related)

my first lego hidden blade posted on xbox360fanboy (http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/11/08/home-made-assassins-creed-wrist-blade/#comments)

Waiting for sandman to come and take hold of the thread http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Post any questions and comments and feel free to send PM's. Credit goes to sandman_seven for starting this whole thing http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

dude if sandman comes then tell him that i bet if he makes some plastic assassin OTF blade he could prolly sell it to like some toy company or something

DeAdLy2323
11-27-2007, 03:57 PM
no toy company would buy it unless the market is black!! (black market, not the people you racist) i would buy one just to say i have one http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif but really, there are probably so many moving parts....

I loved the last topic about sandman's Shank!

but then all of a sudden it had gotten unreadable... too bad
loads of nice stuff going on in there

I hope he will start posting in this topic and that this topic won't be virtually stabbed to death :P

I really love the OTF switchblade he made.
But here in europe we have different names for all that stuff and lenghts so if anyone can and is willing to "translate" it into dutch perhaps I can make one myself.

anyways,

keep up the good work!

Ok i was inspired to make my own mini-version of the hidden blade and so far ive been somewhat successful. I used that elastic band w/ glove technique and there are 2 problems. 1) i can only get the "blade"(im using a pencil right now http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ) to shoot out sometimes. Im thinkin cause its not tight enuf or whatever. 2) i cant seem to find a way not to squeeze the hell out of my dame middle finger ( which i use to shoot the blade out ). Any ideas on how to fix this. help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

assassin_93, you might wanna try using a tighter band like you suggested yourself. also, are you relying on using only your finger to launch it or do you flick your wrist too? using your whole wrist could work as well.

well im usin this elastic band that i tied to the "blade" and the other end to my finger. I tried to make it really tight and then put on my NFL Linemans glove which works as my Altair hidden blade glove.

And yes i also flick my wrist. I will update if i succeed and thanks for all your help. Maybe i could post my hidden pencil ( my hidden blade http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif )

but what im saying is if i tie the end to my finger tighter my finger will get squeezed even more. Unless i should change my elastic band and get a rubber band type thing.

ok i see my problem now.

i had the "blade" going inside my glove and not outside, guess that kinda hinders much movement so im gonna change it up.

what i do at school is kinda cool, i get my watch and make it really loose so it slides on my arm, then i clip a pen to it so it slides and all that ****. i might post a video if i can get my hands on a camera

nvm im having too many problems making this hidden blade.

first of all i ran out of tape http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

second of all my glove is too short and i dont have any tape to tape my other glove to my arm http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

thirdly my tape wasnt strong enough to hold the elastic band at its full stretched http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

fourthly when i did have tape my elastic band wasnt long enough so it couldnt reach my finger at its full length. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif

so in other words i need some tape!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sleepzzz.gif

l...o...l... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

ok, it sounds to me like you need to get electric tape if you're worried about strength.

im using half finger gloves, they're the best.

where's the elastic band from? cuz I'm thinking you're best bet is to destroy a pair of underwear for one http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

the glove is too short huh? maybe you can find some cloth and make it longer, staple it on or sew it if you're thread savvy http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

that's all I can think of http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif good luck! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

thats sick lol..

begun making one with drawer slide mech.
have a real blade attached on it (not sharpened though).. didnt have aything else to use :P srry http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

i cant make the same system as altairs, like a real otf stiletto...

so im making one you need to retract yourself with a locking mech.. so theoretically you can stab anything (to a certain limit ofc.) without pushing the blade back in its sheath..

pretty neat huh :P

cheers ^_^

why dont you jst use a switch blade(or watevr that thing is called u use to open big parcels)and tape or tie it to ur arm.then jst unlock the switch, then flick ur wrist to make the blade pop out. careful of the blade though it might miss and hit ur finger http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif
halarious for people around you tho http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Building this and many other forearm weapons.
Would love to have you guys join the forum and we'll help each other come up with the best designs. One a good design is finished I can b inuild digital files in 3D Solidworks and have one of my knifemaking partners fabricate it on his CNC mill. Working on a couple different designs to be in production hopefully sometime this year.

Hope to see you there

Well, I just made an acount lol http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif so I have been wondering about making a hidden blade for a while as well, and here's the description, I'll upload a design later maybe

Main chamber would be an archers armguard (online) (looks cool too)
Thin metal plating, two sides, should have a cavity for the blade in between (home depot) as sheath for the blade
four triangular bolts and four springs (home depot)
Any type of blade (plastic, metal) notched at the bottom
four metal rings (forgot the real name) you can screw to the metal plating
thin strong wire ( preferably soft)
four soft comfortable rings

Attach the metal plating to the armguard on the bottom. Insert the two spring attached triangular bolts at the exit of the sheath, facing inside, |/ kinda like that. Insert the same at end (near your elbow). Attach the four rings on both ends of the sheath. Run two wires from the triangles at the exit through the rings at the end of the sheath and attach to the comfy rings.
run two other wires from the end of the blade out the back through the rings.
Put rings on fingers

The main idea is that you will have to have the blade facing down to release but can pull it in while it still faces down. The blade locks into place in both locations, thanks to the triangular bolts

sure the retractor doesnt really work but its actually pretty cool never the less

That one looks cool, Nightmare. If there was a way to lock it in place I'd buy/make/steal one myself.

If anyone's interested in getting the 'official' Assassin's Creed hidden blade I made a review of it in this thread, (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/5251069024/m/9911074887/p/6) along with the official short blade. Sorry if the pictures are a bit large, it wasn't my camera.

No offense guys, but aside from sadisticotaku's one posted by nightmare, these all pretty much suck. I'm not saying they were easy to make or that a lot of hard work didn't go into them; I acknowledge the work you likely put in... but they're far from impressive.

I've just recently drawn up some schematics for a double action locking version of the blade which I aim to make the moment I get the money for tools. Basically, it'll extend forward (spring loaded), lock, retract (spring loaded), and lock into place, then only the return mechanism needs to be re-set (though there'll be a 'cocking lever' on the side for that). Also planning on incorporating a safety (so that it wont be possible for it to go off accidentally when you don't want it to) and a top cover (to improve the aesthetics and protect clothing, etc, from moving parts).

Having schematics and actually having a working blade are two different things.

Maybe I'm missing something, but it's one thing to have a blade pop out, another to keep it stable enough to actually stab someone with it, and a third to withdraw it as fast as its projected.

I have to make an amendment to my previous post: sadisticotaku's blade and that infernal blade. Other than that mate, I haven't seen "working blades" posted. I've seen gloves with glorified Popsicle sticks in them (gravity fed both ways), maybe one with a rubber band, and the rest made out of Lego.

Let me ask you this - how many movie critics (not just the paid ones, but ANY critics) have their own movies? Do you think the movie producers would turn around and say, "tell you what: make your own movie first and then you can criticise. I dare say not mate.

If I had've come on here and said "I'm better at building hidden blades than all of you" then, yes, I would need to have proof - but I didn't say that. ANYONE is clearly capable of telling you whether a design is good or not.

I also never once gloated - I STATED that I had these schematics as a way of saying "don't settle for your glove and Popsicle stick; build something better - you CAN do it"

@ JohnConnor2012:
Yeah, it seems pretty difficult to design a blade that can do both. I love Assassin's Creed - especially the hidden blade - and like to challenge myself. I noted that there were no three tier designs out there that were spring loaded both ways, and very few that actually locked while extended (and really none that I could find with a safety)... So I set myself the challenge of designing one.

It wont necessarily retract at the same speed at which it extends, but it will definitely do both.

Your credibility sucks when you turn up here and criticize working blades without having one of your own.

That movie critic reference is pretty funny, sorry to have to tell you but their credibility is just as questionable as yours. It's just they happen to write for popular magazines so they get their opinions heard. People like to listen to other people moan about something, especially is they didn't like it either .

Anyway, all you've done so far is said other members blades suck and claim you have a schematic for a blade that might not even work. There is no evidence that you have a schematic at all.. just your word and seeing as I don't know you, I'm not likely to take your word for it lol

To sum up your initial post in a few words, what you 'said' was...

Most of you guys suck, I will do better.

It certainly didn't say "don't settle for your glove and Popsicle stick; build something better - you CAN do it" like you're claiming http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

This discussion is kind'a pointless anyway, until you actually build and show the blade working your credibility is void. Once you have I'll congratulate you and welcome the gloating from a job well done http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

don't critisize people for doing things, that may not be perfect but they enjoy.

thats like insulting a small child for doing a rubbish drawing.

if however you do make a hidden blade that will go out, to a good length, using a clever machanic which use a quick, simple yet effective method. also locks out strong enough to stab through at least a thickish rubbery surface, yet also can be retracted using an equally quick simple and efficient means, then we will all bow down and call you master.

but seeing as thats unlikey, be nice.
