Other planes have this as well, it's an "Iron" sight, for example, in case the bulb goes out for the reflector sight.

Only dumb question is the one not asked.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

There are no stupid questions, only stupid people... and I think I have worked for most of them at one time or another!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

No, I am afraid there are some really stupid questions. This isn't one of them. I did have someone point to a globe of the world and ask "Is that a globe of Nova Scotia?"

That was a ******* question.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

"A lady came up to me on the street, pointed to my leather flight jacket and said, "Don't you know a cow was murdered for that jacket?" I replied menacingly, "I didn't know I left witnesses. Now, I'll have to kill you too."

Not a dumb question at all mate.

I thought it was for rockets...?

The bulb failure explanation seems more rational though.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I have a question related to this.

I noticed a number of planes have both Iron Sights and Reflector Sights, but the iron sight is either offset, or outside the cockpit. On the A6M2 the iron sight is attached to the reflector sight, but its flipped over to the side so as not to be in the way. After taking a hit in the cockpit the iron sight was flipped over the reflector sight, even though the reflector sight was undamaged.

So is there a key you can assign to flip this back and forward, or is it a damage only thing?

On a related note, what keys do you assign to adjust the K-14 Gunsight on the P-51/P-80?

I cannot explain why the iron sight flips over either, though I've experienced it once or twice myself. As for the K-14 lead-calculating gunsight, it's modes are cycled through by using the "Bombsight Automation" command, which is not a default one, thus must be assigned a key in the setup menu...

Ah, thank you, I had completely forgotten how to change it. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You even have them today on modern aircraft......

The "Mighty" Jaguar for example has a perspex plate with a gun sight retinule etched on it so if the Heads up display and NAVWASS goes tits up, the pilot simply pulls this from it's canvas holder on the left side of the cockpit wall and clips it over the now blank head up display........ voila, he is back in business with this low tech fix.
