$%#*!, I just posted my heart out on this topic in another thread not ten minutes ago. At the risk of offending anyone who hates reading the same message twice, I will repost what I said in the other thread:

"I prefer FS over IL2, now. I need to make room on my hard drive for LOMAC, and if it's a choice to remove Sturmonik or FS2004, FS2004 stays. Seeing as this is a Sturmovik forum, there are no doubt going to be people who will disagree with this.

These are the things that I have done to increase my enjoyment of FS. I suspect that if you don't agree with them, you would probably prefer to fly Sturmovik:

a) I enjoy learning about flight procedures. What exactly goes on in the cockpit of that 737 when I'm stuck in row 14 seat D? I like to know that kind of stuff. FS comes packaged with excellent tutorials and an encyclopedia of flight information.
b) I enjoy buying fancy peripherals and add-ons. Well, I suppose that works for Sturmovik, too, but there's a great number of add-ons for FS (my favorite is Flight Deck Companion, which gives you an interactive copilot and engineer).
c) I enjoy researching real-world topics with useful applications. Again, the same kind of goes for Sturmovik, but I can't say that I get the same kick out of studying flight envelopes and engineers' notes in Russian about a plane that I quite frankly know very little about in terms of a practical sense (before the IL2 game came out, how many gamers knew what a Sturmovik was?). But how to operate an OBS, or how to navigate using a radio or the beautiful, beautiful Garmin GPS map, is pretty keen for me, and I can go to a normal airplane and find those guages and take satisfaction that I now know something about them.
d) I like flying over my own house, and flying to and from other real-world locations that I have actually been to. The visuals in FS really help to enhance that "I've been there" feeling. I really like the visuals in Sturmovik as well, but the Sturmovik maps only let you go to a limited region compared to FS.

On the other hand, sometimes shooting things gets boring, or repetitive, or you start to think about what it would actually feel like to kill someone with one of those sleek, awful weapons, or worse, what it would feel like to be trapped in a burning cockpit 3,000 metres above the frozen tundra on a beautiful, cloudless, ice-cast morning and know that the next breath, or maybe the one after that would be the last before you are totally extinguished... grim. That's not to say that you can't do grim things in FS, like making your own 9/11 scenario, but at least to advance in FS, nobody has to die.

If you feel that any of what I have said doesn't apply to you, then FS is maybe not a good investment. It does get expensive to feed the civilian flight habit, especially once you hit the limitations of the FS engine, and you decide to expand your hobby, either with better computer equipment, or actual real-worl flight experience. If money is a problem, stay away from FS, even if it's in the bargain bin.

Anyway, I'm glad you asked that question, I've been meaning to post about this for months."

It is. Period. I sold FS2000 about 2 weeks after I got it because it was unbearable. FS2004 has me flying daily now.
It took No. 1 from FB...

You are being honest and respective! something that is not very common on these forums anymore. When you where an airacraft mechanic (737 old and new generation!!) there are not alot of secrets in FS for you to explore but, I can understand why people find operating airliners and making cross-country flights intresting. I did a cross country, only on VOR's from the east to the west coast of the USA! it really gives a kick when you come to your destination. Back then, I had a navaid-map, printed out on 30 or so A4 sheets of paper wich I taped together and so, I was able to do this. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

And a GPS flight over the atlantic.

But my heart stays with Il-2/FB.

Good luck with your new hobby.

Twelvefield,

All your points are valid. In fact, if what you stated is your interest, IL-2 is not the right sim for you. FS and IL-2 are different animals, one shouldn't real compare them to see which one is good or bad.

No matter how good a flight sim is...

I just can`t fly it if it hasn`t got guns.

Strange, but true.

(and in FB, I must almost do the equivalent of Flight Simulator 2004 when I have to fly on full real for an hour in bad weather just getting to the target area! That`s enough for me!)

MS. Flight Simulator still being a "graphic simulator"... We need a very good computer to run it and watch a nice sunrise... Otherwise, we still without FMS, Stormscope, pressurization control and many other things that prove's: "As real as it get's" is a big bulsh*t.
Oh, and Wright Brothers... Really don't believe on they, and never gonna believe. Santos Dummont was the real inventor of the aircraft.

I'm the Sim reviewer for Denmark's biggest general Aviation magazine and I just reviewed FS2004 for the Mag.

I can tell you this: there's a reason why Microsoft doesn't offer downloadable demos of their sims. And it's not because their servers are bandwidth-challenged.

Being a longtime advocate and fan of IL2, and a long time hanger-outer in this forum, I know most people here don't want to hear about Microsoft products, or admit that maybe they're actually good, as in the case of FS2004.

I'm glad to see some people step up for a change.

FS2004 has completely taken over my flying time since it came out, which also coincides with the 1.01b FB patch, which drastically reduced my interest in FB.

FS2004 will never have a demo. If you like civilian kinds of stuff, FS is awesome. If you like Quake with planes, FS might not be for you.

Take a look at my screenies, all taken since the FB 1.01b patch came out. You'll see what I've been up to.

I can't recommend FS2004 enough, as anyone from the Pilot's Lounge "Reloaded" already know.

The reason Microsoft have given for the lack of a demo has been that the architecture of the FS series is too large. It seems odd to give that as an excuse and expect it to be accepted, because that's a perfect indicator of the problem with the FS series. No MSFS has been a new game - FS2004 is just FS2, tweaked and upgraded through ten versions. That's the reason why the game's architecture is a huge mess, and why there are so many problems which, due to the origin of the game, are now almost unfixable.

I've never felt that excited about non-combat flight simulators, can somone explain their appeal to me? it seems like all you can do in it is take off, land and fly from point a to point b, hardly the most entertaining thing in the world.

also low down those ground textures look horrible to me!

If you like flight sim,s you will love 2004. The flight models are great and there are some real good aircraft out there for download , for free I might add.

I am waiting for the final version of FB to come out before I make any changes on my Harddrive , but FS 2004 is going to stay for years to come.

Boeing 747-400s don't often fly 200 ft from the ground. Landing in FS2004 is WAY harder than anything FB can throw at me, and plus, in FS you can land at night in the full glory of *gasp* an airfield not lit at the corners by campfires.... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Well, to be fair, I think it`s unfair to compare the two as if they`re competitors (as someone else here said).

I`m happy to compare CFS3 with FB because both are flight sims based upon WWII combat flight. Flight Simulator 2004 is NOT based on combat, it`s based on civilian flying. It seems to me a great mistake to compare it to combat sims. And also a waste of time...
