View Full Version : Limited depth charges for escorts.

Will destroyers have a fixed number of depth charges.
Seems unrealistic that a destroyer could just pound you day and night without exhausting it's supply.
Once i'm under depth charge attack I like the idea that I can survive knowing that the destroyer will either break off and conserve his ammo or exhaust his supply and cease attacks.
Otherwise I'll just be pinned down till game over.

that crew member chalking the number of depth charges dropped onto a board in the control room would make a hugely influentail gameplay feature of this limitation....would be great..unlikely tho but very nice and an important tactical factor) would love to watch him keep count on the black board..(ala DAS BOOT..?)

In SH2, depth charges are limited depending on the type of escort, the type of depth charge carried, along with the date.

Do escorts in SHII really had limited depth charges?

What I really founded annoying was that in SH2 sometimes escorts had a scripted setting that resulted in that when you reached a defined distance from them (ea 3300 meters in surface in bad weather) they automatically found you and shoot. That was very annoying because it made you feel that it was impossible to sneak into certain ships, only because they were programmed to do so. There were some kids of "super-destroyers" which were nearly unbeatable, like those in the mission "sunk of the courageos", where it was almost impossible to run away after shooting to the carrier, and of course, it did not sunk with one torpedo as in the reality.
Do you think that there would be a more aleatory system of detection in SH3? I mean, a crew cannot sail the entire atlantic at the highest alert and with plenty of people on the deck watching for subs!!!! There must be the possibilty of finding them distracted or that the sonarman was watching over another course while, for example, shooting a torpedo.

when you think about it this is potentailly something in the long run that would have quite a large impact on the gameplay...as once we have all grown used to playing SH3 ...having no previous knowledge of how many depth charges encountered Destroyers will be carrying actually will add a major dynamic element to every dc attack...a dd may have only enough for one attack or it may have a full load or anything imbetween...from what i have read DD's didn't rush off to get a full load of DC's every time they dropped a set..so they must have all been carrying different amounts of dc's ...this is one of the things missing from SH2...you know the DD has a full load... this makes every dd attack much more predictable..

anything that allows for dynamic gameplay is a boon long term

Some depth charges should be faulty. There should be duds from time to time but in rare historical instances. Ive read that this does happen and also the fact that if a depth charge hits a shelf on the ocean somewhere,say close to shore, that it wont explode because it never reached set depth. This was true with earlier models.
