View Full Version : Trick to Manual Landing Gear?

Let me start off by saying I realize you have to mapo the keys for manually raising the gear in the F4F. I have mapped my manual gear up key to shift-G and manual gear lower to ctrl-G. However, it seems to have no effect on raising and lowering the gear. Is there something else you need to do to get this functionality to work like make sure the cockpit is open or unlock the tail wheel or something that I'm missing?

I have no problems with all the other mapped keys like open cockpit, folding the wings, using chocks in / chocks away...etc. Anybody have any idea why the manual gear isn't working for me?

Keep on pumping it

If you fly Wildcat or I~16 alot, you may wish to map manual gear to G and C instead, as you must pump them 40+ times. Holding down Shift or Ctrl for 40 pumps is kinda...bizzare

Yup. What Lexx said. Keep an eye on the gear lights and you'll know when it's locked down or raised up.

I didn't realize you had to do the pump thing - I have remapped as suggested and all is well.

Is there a indicator light in the Wildcat? I never saw one, and always watched the crank to see if the gear was fully raised/lowered. (about 50 pumps I notice)

Just forward of the crank is a small slide indicator probably linked via cable to the LG. you have to zoom in very close and look down right to see it. when the little bead is full aft, the gear's up and full forward is down. It's easier to just keep pumping til the crank won't move or (not realistic) F2 and see if they're all the way in.

Joe Foss once said that it took 35 or 40 turnd to get the wheels up. But for landing they would un-latch the control and put the plane in a tight climbing turn......spiiiinnnn.....wheels down. He siad you had to make sure your leg and right elbow were out of the way or the handle would break your arm or leg as it spun.

take 1 simple keystroke to map the wheels up/down, then program that keystroke to a pair of buttons on the stick and set a macro to it.

ex: num1=manual gear up
num2=manual gear down

stick profile for evo's/et al: manual gear up=joystick button 6, keypress=num1, macro delay=.05 seconds.

now save all that and before flight, turn on the stick profiler. since i have track ir, i have no need for the hat switch. so for manual gear planes, leftshift state+hatswitch up raises the gear as fast as the p-51's. i just have to hold the hatswitch up and the macro continues to run till the gear is fully in the wells. simple to make and alot less work gettin the gear up/down.

Hey! No fair! That's-that's LANDING GEAR ON A SLIDER!!!

Actually, you can hear the gear cranking down; when it stops, it's safe to land, and you don't have to Pause the game and toggle your FOV to look around inside the cockpit for a visual cue.

I assigned manual gear up to U and manual gear down to D; it seemed kinda convenient, although it does get tedious mashing the key down around forty times.

I notice that the landing gear light almost never comes on, on the F4F, esp in seat up view.

If you have FB--or you still have FB like Badsight said--fly I~16 in QMB tonight. You will never forget it.

If you have programmable rotaries (like on the X-45) you could create a dead band then set up/down on either side of it. Of course, you will upset horseback if you do this http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Great idea Sandman. Especially with having a Tracker and the hatswitch is no longer needed. Hat up, gear up; hat down, gear down for manual gear http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
