just wondering if i'm the only fool that constantly adjusts my mixture depending upon altitude.

I don't and I do just fine...but I'm a rookie pilot, so don't listen to me /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

My lawnmower is a 2-stroke, so I gotta mix oil in the gas.

I mess with it either for altitude or if I want to extend the fight some by thinning the mix.

once above 4000 I find nothing much happens at first, but after a while the engine starts to make a groaning noise, I seem to lose power. That`s when I mix until the funny noises stop. I once experimented down to 0 mix and the engine didn`t like.

For the rest of my flight I was a Glider!

hehe

Mixture to idle cutoff, yes sir !! .. ooh the engine stopped http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

More seriously in a plane like the Yak 9 at 7000 metres you will loose about 1000 rpm and a similiar amount of power if you leave mixture at 100% vs dropping it back to 60% or so

Its easy to use though .. drop the mixture back a few notches then gradually increase it again .. at some point engine revs will drop drastically. Simply go one notch back to get revs up again and mixture is set.

Some planes start to smoke at altitude unless you tweak the mix. That's about the only time I touch it.

Diesel fuel is pretty good when mixed with fertilizer.

Funny you should ask. I just got out of MOH_Server on HL, and therein just had my *first* dogfight starting at 4 KM (as opposed to >1 KM like the 100 previous times), and I was in a I-16, believe it or not!! And I remembered my 'training': mixture 70% and supercharger stage 2 /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif I wasn't even sure the Ishak had a supercharger until I hit the button 'just to be safe /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif It all paid off, too: I made it back to base, but the 109G-something didn't.

Argh just had a rude awakening. Yak-3 + 10m + 100% fuel mix = DEAD ENGINE!

Thank God I got the mixture down and the engine back up in time...I lost 4000m in altitude /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

hm...lowering the fuel mixture is also usefull in long flights for fuel consumption. If I have a long(er) flight I set mixture (if allowed) to 60-80% as well as lower the propeller pitch and throttle a bit... this is very handy in long flights at higher altitudes.

If Oleg goes the extra step for us in CEM department than mixture will be very fun to play with.

as you gain alt you wanna lean the mixture to keep fuel/air at correct level. But then you engage your supercharger and youll need to bring mixture back up or get less performance.

I think you tell when to engage your supercharger by keeping an eye on the manifold pressure gauge. When you start seeing less pressure you bump to stage2.The only way to judge mixture is to look from outside for brown smoke coming from exhuast. How did the pilots do it back then??

i do not really feel the need to use mixture in LW planes for performance reasons (as of FB version 1.0). However, it looks like fuel consumption (and engine cooling) is reduced with reduced mixture which is correct.

if you are low and have enough fuel and an overheated engine ... using a mixture of 120% should also help cooling the engine ...

(i wonder why these planes did not have an EGT gauge??)

Depends on the a/c.

The I-16 smokes like a bored ****** when you get over ~4000m.
