View Full Version : Why does the autopilot make my brain bleed?

Hello my planeflying chums.

I'm kinda new to this game, and have started a campaign as a german JABO flyer on normal difficulty.

The problem I have is that the autopilot keeps dropping my bomb the instant there are enemy planes nearby. Why does it do this? Any mission with any kind of airbattle before my groundtarget is a pain in the butt because of this. I can't use the auto or the timeincrease if I want to have any bombs to use to complete my mission.

Another weird thing my autopilot does, although not as often, is setting my throttle to 0%. This usually happens when i'm on my way home from missions. I fly casually and all of a sudden the autopilot makes me crash.

Two little problems I'd appreciate if someone could explain to me. Otherwise I'm totally in love with the game /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Yes the autobomb dropping key,,,which seems to be the autopilot. I have the same thing. I end up carpet bombing all the way to the target. But mine stops if i click the button that activates the bombs, while in autopilot. Otherwise i would be dropping bomb for hundreds of miles.
There are a few glitches in the game, and everyone seems to be waiting for a patch to come soon.
As for me i am just lucky enough the game runs smooth on my machine /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I posted a threat a few days ago about the same subject with the autopilot dropping the bombs, but got no satisfying response...Now, I just take control of the aircraft as soon as I cross the front line...Not the best solution, but more than nothing!

I should probably clarify the plane I'm flying is a bf109, not a bomber.

When fighter are engaged they drop their tanks or bombs so they can have better turn rates etc etc. By flying on autopilot when the enemies attack its like being an AI so the pilot releases the payload.

Either turn off the auto pilot when you spot enemies or before depending how far they are out when it happens.

Or leave it on unlimited ammo and like the other guy said make a new road to the target.

May you not become adirt torpedo.

It is standard practice to drop bombs on fighter bombers if enemy aircraft threaten to engage. You might think that the AI is being a bit presumptuous in doing this, but if you are happy to leave autopilot on when bogies are around, I don't think you can blame the autopilot for trying to look after itself!

Knock off the autopilot as soon as bad guys are around and take your fate into your own hands :-)

It's not that easy. The autopilot doesn't drop the bombs when engaged, it drops them as soon as there are enemy fighters announced over the intercome. And with no delay.

There is no chance I can disable the autopilot and return to normal timespeed in the microfraction of a second it takes for the auto to release the bombs.

As you may know, enemy fighters are announced usually long before they are actually visible. There is just no way for me to exit the auto in time.

Apparently, your "THREAT" was really serious, since you didn't get any response.

Such skill! I have difficultly in hitting stationary targets, let alone the airborne enemy.

Bloodnock: A little tip for you if you want to try air to air bombing yourself - put bombs on a slider :-)

I can.

Don't use autopilot.

It's that simple!/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I'm just not a fan enough of airsimulators to sit through 40 mins of trying to stick close to my leaders plane, dropping the bombs, flying 40 mins back and then ops crashing upon landing and having to do it all over ;p

What`s this insistence on using Autopilot? I must admit I use myself on very long journeys sometimes, but as soon as I`m in enemy territory or I hear any potential trouble off it goes.
Basically you want the Autopilot to do it all your work with no mistakes. They didn`t even have autopilots back then (at least nothing like as advance as even the IL2 program), consider yourself lucky!

What i have done is hit the pause button then you have time to turn the autopilot off and go to normal time. then hit the pause once more this worked for me

Hora, fly with map icons enabled, and use the map. The AI can "see" enemy aircraft when they're about 7 km away. Watch the map and return to normal time acceleration and manual flight before any of the blue guys get within 7 km of the red guys, and make that radio call that starts all the jettisoning. It's not realistic, but neither is x8 time compression. It also won't keep your wingies from puking their bombs off, but that leaves you (as the sole bomb carrier) to be the hero when you get to the target.

Alternatively just use "level" autopilot instead, and make course corrections by hand.

Not perfect but a halfway house.

Forgive my newbishness but how do I apply a "level" autopilot? This would be great!

I just made some additional tests, and it seems it doesn't matter where in the mission your plane is, have you encountered enemy fighters at any point (be it 30 minutes or 30 seconds ago), the autopilot will release your bombs, whether over enemy or friendly territory or even the local kindergarten.

I love this feature. Watch out kids! [/Sarcasm]

In the 'misc' section of controls, choose a key for 'toggle level autopilot'.

Level autopilot works more like a genuine WW2 autopilot, rather than 'standard' game autopilot which hands over the controls to an AI pilot.

I've stopped using the Autopilot since the original Il2, when he crash-landed my 190 and killed me.
At this time I rarely use it and mainly over friendly territory, but I never leave it on when I am attacked.
The level stabilizer is quite good, but it's easily influenced by the wind, and actualy lose speed in time and cause small deviation from the course.
