View Full Version : Buying a geForce 7900 after work

This will be my last upgrade to this PC

The other day, I was given another 1MB stick of RAM (buddy got a new PC and doesn't need PC2700 memory anymore). Today, I am scooping up the AGP GeForce 7900 512 MB I saw on the shelves yesterday. I didn't buy myself anything for Xmas (sniff), and this is my present to me

This will upgrade a 6600 (vanilla) that I was very pleased with. I'll toss that and my spare 512 stick into my Dad's PC. Last upgrade for this PC, next upgrade will be a new PC with the bells n whistles, but that's probably not for the better part of a year

Anyone have any input on this card? I've been very pleased with GeForce stuff in the past. My 6600 is a little dynamo for what it is, couldn't have been more pleased with it<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I'm an ATI kind of guy but I found this review at 3D Guru:

Hope it helps.

I was thinking about one of those cards too. Be interested to hear how it goes http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Bebop, that link is to an SLI one though isn't it. Not an AGP model?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I have a PCI Plus 7800 GT 256 Mb, and I'm VERY satisfied. It eats power, true, but FB runs like Ben Johnson high on anabolizers.

That AGP of your may be the only bottleneck, but with 512 Mb you can load more textures than the kilt of a hippy Scotch.

Yeah, the AGP is a sticking point, but I'm stuck with it.

All I'm worried about is heat, I think. I've actually considered cutting a hole in the side of my desk and stalling a desk fan in it, you know, one of the big ones<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

7900 is a low power/low heat design. I have a 7900GT, and even after hours of IL2 at max overclock, it rarely gets to more than 50?-52?C.

My old 6800GT would sometimes get into the 80's. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Sorry. What do you expect from an ATI user? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yeah I did know. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/halo.gif Just thought that was too funny! So just how small is a 1 Mb RAM card anyway? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I have a 7900GT in my machine and I can run FB at 1600x1200 with 2x AA and 2x AT and still get frames between 30 and 60 even over cities! It also does very well running Oblivion. I'm running a dual core 3200 with 2 gigs of memory. My frames are probably limited by my slow refresh rate on the monitor more than the card.

One warning: My frames dropped a bunch with last set of Nvidia drivers, so I switched back the 46.xx series. They do fine for all my games.

I have a PCI-E 7900GT with 256Mb, and added a Zalman cooler to it. Average temps dropped from around 55C (after an hour or two of simming) to the low 40s even on a hot day. If your case has a fan that blows in and another that blows out, the Zalman will be a big help (but that's another $40-$50).

cheers

i wish you best of luck and that it runs fine out of box for you.

i just bought the AGP 7800 GS oc by BFG, and i have swapped out several cards, and PSUs to get it running. i never could. went to several forums, and many are having 2 of the same major problems.

-immense slowdown, then speeds up. (possible by card being TOO COOL, as some nzone guys have found out)

-windows wont load/crash on start-up

i posted here for help. (with possible resolution at the end,but card was allready returned in my case)
http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/49310655/m/5761012815/p/1

and check out the nvidia "nzone" forums, just to give you an idea how many are having problems with this series card.

im not saying dont buy it, but after 3 of the same cards not working and upgrading PSU's got a little tiresome to get it to work right. (tried 4 PSU's on 2 seperate, and completely different computers that are "current" tech . my wifes computer/psu, my computer/old 400 watt psu, a 600 watt psu, and finally a 750 watt PSU)

again, i hope it works fine for you http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif just be aware.

I just got an AGP BFG 7800 GS OC 256MBGDDR3 to replace my die'n overheated ATI 9800 Pro 128 and I must say .... its not much better I only average 10 more FPS in any game ... Dont know bout the 7900 but to me it was not worth the upgrade except for the fact that my pc would crash in games after 15 min cause my old card would shutdown lol<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Im so confused i feel like a hungry baby in a topless club.

agree. from what i've ben reading, its soemwhat ok if you really want to have a "one last upgrade for AGP" before going to PCI-e. i thought i was the only trying to keep that AGP horse alive http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

best of luck, chuck/chris/BBB http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

:EDIT::: 7900 with 512 mem!!!!? just noticed. i thought they said only the 7800 was the last big AGP card!

i might have to try again! (considering the last post on my other thread in community help might be a fix)

A change from a ATI card to Nvidia or vice versa usually results in bad performance, even if you use driver cleaner and get rid of all the files.

Better to do a complete reformat and you should see a big difference.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Just made a present to myself last week too, an ATI 1950Pro (AGP) card.

Upgraded from a NV6800GT (AGP) on that PC (P4 3.0HT).

The performance of the 1950Pro (AGP) for EUR 220,- is amazing and I can only but recommend this card for AGP upgraders !

Runs 4AA 4AF like a dream!

And most important, the image quality of the ATI card is much better than what NVIDIA has to offer (I have NV6800GT(AGP), NV7800GTX, NV7900GTX(SLI) PCs running IL2FB ).

LOL
C'mon EVERYBODY knew Boy George was gay. That's like being surprised when Elton John declared his orientation. (Everybody knew it...... except for Elton.)

Oh, and congrats on the card, Chris. Should be a dream to run your new Flying Tiger's campaign on. (no pressure http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif)
