View Full Version : Game freezes with graphic distortion

Since about a month, I've been having random game freezes while playing online.

The symptoms are always the same: I'm flying for about 10 minutes to an hour, everything freezes and cockpit textures turn all sorts of solid colours. I can alt-tab out of there, and when I open Task Manager, I see that il2fb.exe is using 50% of my CPU (HT is enabled, so it can't go anywhere above 50) and memory use is shooting up. I'm talking 5mb a second. I can watch this going on as long as I run out of memory, really.

Steps I've taken to try and solve the problem:

- Tried the memory leak fix (Garbage Collector): no luck
- Use both the old and new exe: both produce the same problem; and the problem was already present in 3.00
- Hunt for heating issues: none detected
- Try different Catalyst releases (4.9, 4.10, 4.11): all produce the same problem
- Lower my memory timings from 2-3-2-6 (I have low latency memory) to 3-3-3-7 (I suppose I should try lowering the RAS to CAS precharge too): still the same problem
- Reinstall everything from scratch; clean format: you guessed it, no effect

Things I am sure off:

- I'm free of virii, spyware and unnecessary programs running in the background
- Latest drivers for everything
- No problems with other games
- Prayers made to the Merciful Gods of Preventing Random Freeze Bugs

Any help, thoughts or redirects to other threads would be greatly appreciated. Dxdiag follows.

If its turning all sorts of colors when it locks, my first guess would be hardware concerning the video card. Too hot, improperly seated, busted, etc. It seems like you've covered the software end, short of a format.

Maybe you could reseat it and see if that stops it.

My Ti4400 used to lock with artifacts in FB. I just reseated the card, tightened everything else, and it didn't happen anymore.

Did you actually look at a temperature gauge while playing? I've had heat do that too. Slot fan, and no more.

Even if not doing anything in other games, still could be H/W issue. For example, I could play Quake 3 fine, but Ground Control would make mine overheat.

Also, there is a tech support forum.

Thanks for your reply Fennec!

I tend to agree with your view on the problem being video card related, though the "memory shooting up"-thing seems to point towards another direction. By all means, I will reseat the card and see if I get any improvement.

And yes, I did right about everything software-wise. Including a format, actually. I'm pretty close to desperation.

Couple more things I'm going to play with is reducing the memory timings even more so, deactivate HyperThreading and lower sound acceleration (which is a shame with my new Audigy 2 ZS).

infernal : got the same problem as you. I`m on p4 3.4, 1 gig of ram and a gf6800gt clocked to ultra card running everything else without crashing or locking up, but pf is another thing. Im getting random lockups, my screen filled with squares in all kinds of crazy colors, but I can still make out the background / what I was looking at / flying. Very strange indeed. Doesnt seem like a heat-problem. Hl2 should have crashed my pc then too ...

Hey Vargtass-0e,

Judging by your description, we seem to have the same problem. As I have an ATI X800 Pro, we can safely rule out the fact that it's related to the video card. Mine is running at stock speed and is not causing any kind of overheating.

One question though: can you remember exactly when the problem started to occur? Did you purchase new hardware recently?
Memory or sound card in particular.

I have 2gb of Corsair Low Latency DDR400 (added an additional gig to my existing gig not so long ago). I also switched from a Fortissimo 7.1 to an Audigy 2 ZS.

I'm keeping you up to date with my findings.

Finally, someone else has the same problem as me. I have a Dell P4, 3.2 ghz (800 mhz bus), 1 gb dual path ddr ram, fx 5700 ultra 128 mb card. This started when I got Pf and merged it into fb+ae. Until then, never had a problem with fb+ae using the same system. Nothing changed but the game. Still having it with the patch. I too thought it was heat so I installed a PCI exhaust fan right next to the video card in the agp slot. Also reinstalled the entire game. Still have the problem. I am getting frustrated to say the least.

Nevermind. DirectX doesn't allow perfect landscape and once I looked around, it wasn't all that great.

BTW, I seriously doubt this is a hardware issue. I'm having the same problems. Flickers, funny colors, strange black polygons on the ground, short freezes followed by long freezes. Soon, the whole game locks up and sometimes i have to cold-boot or I get a spontaneous reboot followed by the message "Computer has just recovered from a serious system error."

Another problem im having online is that my ping is periodically spiking into the red. Im on comcast cable and with fb+ae my pings were always rock steady in the double digit range. Now the pings are still in the double digit range but periodically spike into the red and then back with no in between. This game is quickly becoming unplayable for me on line which is the only way I like to play it. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Alright, status update.

I'm not gonna cry victory just yet, but I've been flying online the whole night, about 3 hours straight, having no problems at all.

What I did beforehand was run Prime95. You can get it from <span class="ev_code_YELLOW">here</span> (http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm). I ran the torture test, which ran fine on my current memory timings (3-4-3-8), but got errors soon when using my SPD memory timings (2-3-2-6). I never really thought much of it, even though my RAM is supposed to run at these timings.

So what I did, I read up on configuring my memory and went into the BIOS to up my DDR voltages. I set my timings to 2-3-2-6 and got the following results:

2.55v: Prime95 crashes after 10 seconds
2.65v: Prime95 crashes after a minute or so
2.75v: Prime95 ran fine for an hour, then I stopped it

So I went online with my squad (<span class="ev_code_YELLOW">BM357</span> (http://www.bm357.com) -- check us out, we're looking for new recruits) and played just fine for the very first time in a month. Didn't get any crashes for a couple of hours straight.

My take on the situation would be to

1) check out your RAM manufacturer and see what timings they recommend; usually set by the SPD (default setting) in the BIOS

2) run Prime95 using the Torture test number 3 (the one that tests lots of memory), for as long as you can, I'd say an hour at least, just to make sure -- more is better

* if it crashes, try upping your voltage starting from the bottom voltage towards the upper one

* if it doesn't crash, you may be able to use lower memory timings (never beyond what your manufacturer recommends!) -- either way, try upping the voltage by 0.10 volt

3) run Prime95 torture test again for an hour or so

4) play some PF, you deserve it -- see if you still get the freezes/crashes

5) report back

Good luck guys! I'm off to bed now, but I'm keeping you up to date as soon as I get back to IL2. If I don't get any more crashes for the coming days, I'll consider the problem solved on my end.

Vargtass-0e

checked torturetest for about an hour ... zero errors using spd. No errors what so ever. This doesnt seem to be the problem with my machine. Only other thing I can notice is that we`ve all got p4 with ht ... could that be an issue ?

The HyperTreading is something I was thinking of as well. I'm gonna go out and play for a couple of hours now. If I freeze up again, I'll let you know and I'll try disabling HT.

Personally, I would feel reluctant to do it, as it seems I get slightly better performance with HT enabled. Not to mention my idle and load temperature is a lot lower with HT enabled (nearly 5‚?C).

Reporting back soon!

Do you actually get a hard freeze with sound loop? I need to alt-tab out of there and terminate the game through task manager.

To be honest, it seems to happen more often on servers with a lot of activity going on. I never had it while playing offline or on my squad's server (not many people joining and leaving).

Vargtass-0e
11-25-2004, 05:06 PM
I`ll do some testing now as well .. try to pinpoint more exactly, but it does not seem like a hardware-related issue. My screens would look something like what skychimp posted, only with those figures in white and on water http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

In the COMMUNITY HELP forum, Fordfan stated that ALL his games began to act up, not just PF. I played PF for awhile, then went and played Call Of Duty and THAT game acted the same way. Funny flickers, lock-ups and freezes.

I went ahead and rebooted, and went back into Call of Duty. It played fine.

Then I went back into PF and played for awhile and started to get the flickers and freezes. Got out of that, went back and played COD and that started to act up again.

Rebooted, started COD, played fine. Played PF, got flickers and freezes, went back into COD, got the same thing.

I went ahead and uninstalled FB/AEP/PF completely. COD playing perfectly fine now.

There is something up PF or the patch.

There are TOO MANY people posting all of a sudden with NEW problems that all seem basically the same for this to be a hardware problem. I think PF or the patch is screwed up. (SCREWED UP is the only thing I can say given my technical unexpertise.)

First post - sorry it had to be a gripe but I was so excited (in a strange sense of the word) that someone else was having these issues.

I get hard lock ups / freeze that require reboot or crazy colored snow that I can see through but have to navigate to a reboot. Doesn't happen in any other games.

P4 3.4
6800 Ultra w. 6.93 WHQL drivers
Audigy 2 ZS platinum w. latest drivers
1 GB RAM
FB/AEP/PF
3.01 upgrade / patch

All in a Cooler Master ATCS case - all the HW runs very cool.

If anyone knows how to address this, I'd love to hear about it. I play this flight sim more than any other even with the occasional system crashes.

Ive got a new problem now that doesnt allow me to stay online long enough to see if the old freeze up problem is still there. Im on Comcast cable and im getting periodic ping spikes which either get me kicked off servers or cause me to disconnect all together. My connections used to be very low ping (30s - 80s)and rock solid. Now they are very low with periodic spikes into the 1000s. I uninstalled all of the game and just put on FP+AE with patches but it does it on that too. Comcast says I have a good signal but I will trade out the modem tomorrow to see if thats the problem. Seems strange though that before PF I had absolutely no problems what so ever.

I fly only offline (56k). I've had campaigns corrupted (3) and missions crash (15+) with similar circumstances as this thread.
Lockup usually occurs during view changes (outside-to-inside, cockpit-to-nearstEnemy). This is the only snapshot i have, but it is representative:

WHEW - well guys it seems to be an OpenGL issue with the game if ATi users AND nVidia users are getting these problems. This has NEVER happened to me until PF came around. I have the merged install, so it happens maybe every hour now. FB+AEP was just fine. Glad to know I'm not the only one getting glitches, and VERY happy to know, it's not an ATi thing.

Bingo!! I now know it's not just me or my machine....here's another question though: I was experiencing few if any hangups before the 3.01 patch, now i'm getting hung up all over the place. You might be on to something there. My ADSL modem is a total POS. Also, I'm starting to consider overheating as well (even though all my temps are well below recommended highs), so I'll try and run case-open for a while. Maybe try and get a new modem while I'm at it.

Short lag freezes are a generally acknowledged issue, especially on heavy traffic servers such as WarClouds, FallenAngels and Virtualpilots. This said, it should by no means actually freeze up our game completely; which it is doing now. At this point of sheer desperation, I blame Maddox games; notwithstanding how fantastic I think they are for pulling off the IL2 series.

Lots of people have had or are still having this same problem. I was working with Oleg on this problem from a bug rebort. It was discovered that by turning S3TC compression on, the lockups with graphic distortion go away. It seems to have something to do with mirror's. You can keep the mirror's off and no lockups, but lockups with them on. Oleg seems to thing it's the ATI drivers and the Newer cards. I also have an X800. No more lockups and I gained 20-30 fps with SCTC compression.

Good Luck

Hello Beolke,

Thank you for your post. Though I am already using S3TC compression, I turn mirrors on and off during flight for general overwatch or whenever I have a bogey sixing me. I'll try doing it without them from now on and see if that solves my problem.

Well, I'll need to figure out something else, because switching over to S3TC alone didn't help: Flew one mission just fine in a P-47 - flew another right after in the Corsair, and my game went kaput, as usual - texture nausea. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif I'll restart my ENTIRE system after each flite if I have to in order to play with mirrors. Price I'll pay til someone gets a fix for this.

Oh, if this makes sense, I've got an ATi Radeon 9800 Pro, and a HT capable CPU, and of course I play the dad-gum game in OpenGL with the highest of settings.....

Actually, I don't have graphic distortion in-game; just hard freezes accompanied by a graphic distortion. And it just happened AGAIN. Without mirrors, with S3TC on, all temps are okay. Desperation just kicked in again.

Hey Infernal - I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but that's actually GOOD news - the fact that this bug apparently has nothing to do with mirrors.
The bad news is, we're ALL back to square one, and ALL in the same boat. Man, I never had this issue until I merged my PF install. The new patch has it running like Forrest Gump, but worrying about wether my game will just screw the pooch right in the middle of an intense online co-op really blows.....
Full system shutdown, and restart between missions keeps this bug @ bay......... For now.

The new patch has it running like Forrest Gump, but worrying about wether my game will just screw the pooch right in the middle of an intense online co-op really blows.....
Full system shutdown, and restart between missions keeps this bug @ bay......... For now.

OLEG, RESCUE US!!!!!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Gosh, this is a new one. Save the track and the mission file and ship it to Oleg. He was great in helping me with my problem.

How's about a picture? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif This is what happened to me online in a beaufighter (no mirrors).

Not good - I didn't happen to record the flight though - maybe next time when I'm expecting it to happen, eh? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

O_O

My God, that's EXACTLY what I'm getting.

I am running an NV-35-based card (quadro fx) and I am getting the same stutters and graphic distortions looking differently. It always seem to happen more with PF maps and specially with bombers but it happens with the ki-84 and the P-40s too. It was alot less grequency-wise and a lot less duration with FB or AEP maps. Here is what it looked like:

http://members.toast.net/zeroneg1/pf1error.jpg

http://members.toast.net/zeroneg1/pf2error.jpg

I did however solve my problem by going back a few NVIDIA DRIVER builds to 61.76 and the game plays really well for me now.

Of course I am not using S3TC and I have my sound at Minimal (Direct x setting). maybe some of you who are using older Nvidia based cards (5800 and below) might want to try this approach. I believe that the 5800 and below are based on NV-35 or NV-40?

I really think this problem is somehow a result of Java compiler errors. That's why it seems to happen no matter what video card you have.

This instability also seems to manifest itself in different ways, based on varying hardware configurations and video/sound settings (in and out-of-game settings). My symptoms look exactly like Hawggy's posted screenshot above.

One thing that is very strange is it seems to somehow be tied to flight path. If I fly on the New Guinea map and take-off from Wedau airfield and fly due north, I crash after 10-15 minutes. If I launch from this same field and fly west, I can fly all the way to Moresby, turn around and fly all the way back to Goodenough Island with no problem. Others having the same problem report this same phenomena. I also concur that it seems to have nothing to do with mirror usage.

I also find that no combination of sound settings, and/or video sound drivers make any difference. This statement is based on 15 hours of rigorous testing, varying one setting value at a time. There is one common thing I have noted, when flying in the sector of the New Guinea map that seems to cause me the most problems, is the fact that there are a great many clouds in this sector, and they sometimes act erratically from a view distance perspective. What I mean is, sometimes cloud cells in my flight path just vanish.

Anyway, I noted the following error message in my IL2 root directory, following one of my early crashes, which I forwarded to the development team, along with my Dxdiag; see if any of you guys can make sense of it:

Thanks for your post pacettid. Finally, it seems we are getting somewhere. I seem to be experiencing the exact same symptoms as both you and Hawggy; though I was never able to take a screenshot or produce an error message linked to the problem.

I've tested your flight path theory, and to my astonishment, find it to be absolutely true. Took off from Wedau with a B-25, flew north, saw those erratic clouds you were talking about and bam -- hard freeze.

Hopefully you'll get word from the Maddox team soon.

If you read my post, you'll notice that I stated that I had already forwarded the error message, and the DxDiag to the developers, unfortunately, I was not able to get a recording.

BM357_Infernal, were you able to get one?

If so, I recommend you get it to VFC CrazyIvan and he will make sure it gets into the hands of the developers, ASAP

Well I thought my problems were over but apparently not. At first my problem was always online and always occurred during a regular hitch in the game which would cause a hesitation. This would cause lockup and strange things to happen to the picture such as what is being reported. But then, it became a ping spike problem which was getting me kicked off of servers. Periodically the ping scale would spike into the red (60 to 1500). However, I never experienced anymore lockups and distorted picture. After changing out the cable modem for almost 5 days I had no ping spikes lockups or anything. There were no problems, that is, until last night on an AFJ site. This time when there was a hitch or hesitation in the game, I would get kicked off of the server. But the ping scale never spiked at all, it still showed great ping. This happened several times and I finally quit playing. By the way I'm still on 3.01m. This weekend I will go ahead and load 3.02mb and give it a try since I'm tired of waiting for the real patch and almost all servers are on 3.02mb anyway. I want to see if this problem remains with the new beta patch and the new dedicated servers. This problem is getting frustrating.

I think it all appeared with version 3.02bm for me. I got some random lockups i never ever got before with PF, not eve nwith version 3.01m. I didn't change anything for 3.02bm but the lockups showed up, as well as the weird long freezes online. It's the game software, not our computers.

I didn't record a track myself, but I think (and fear) the issue can be easily reproduced; and I will do so shortly.

As for me, my problems starting appearing as soon as I got PF. I actually once had a reply from Oleg Maddox stating:

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>Could you try with recommended the 4.1 (but not 4.10!) drivers

It seems that it isn't our bug.... and it also seems happens only with ATI
cards....
However my 3 guys play online currently and not one such thing happens for
the last days with 3.02b version

Anyway I will show your message to our graphics programmer. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Unfortunately, the 4.1 drivers are incompatible with my X800 Pro -- as the earliest release for this card is Catalyst 4.5. Also, no word from the graphics programmer.

I think there are plenty of guys out here that are having this problem now...question is, is anybody listening, and if so what is the status?

BM357_Infernal
12-03-2004, 04:09 PM
Well, the 4.11 opengl drivers give me general untextured weirdness with both the old and new exec. So I've got the 4.11 installed but with the 4.8 atioglxx.dll. I'll try setting it back to default settings with the 4.11.

Is this only happening in the combined install or also with PF standalone?

Hawggy
12-03-2004, 05:04 PM
I'm merged, and this didn't start happening til I merged. AEP expansion was seamless. Same as Battle Over Europe. But, PF has sickened my game. Make it so bad, I anticipated it most. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I've been using the DNA drivers from 4.10 to 4.11 - this is the ONLY game giving me issues (I've got at least 10 next gen games that give me NO problems at all). I'm with Pace on this one - I think it's a Java issue within PF.

I'm nearing desperation. I've sent another mail to Mr Maddox, but I'm starting to believe this really is an ATI problem. And what do they care about us? All they want is to keep Half-Life 2 players happy.

My last ATI purchase ever. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

I got word from Mr Maddox within the hour! Can you believe this? This illustrates once more how the team actually cares for the community. And this was his reply:

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>We know already this and it is reported to ATI. They confirmed that they will work over this currently.. Its not our own bug, I'm sorry. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

So my greatest fears might have been the truth all along. Now unless ATI is as responsive as Maddox Games, I think we're doomed. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

One more question though, for all you NVIDIA users out there who happen to have the same problem:

Is it looking identical to what Hawggy described (who has ATI) or more like Zneg1 (who has NVIDIA)?

If no NVIDIA user has problems similar to Hawggy, I think that in the end, we are looking at two separate problems; so NVIDIA should be made aware of that as well.

After installing the patch for 3.02bm I am still having the problem online of getting kicked off of the server for low pings (usually during pauses) even though my ping shows to be very low and steady. When I did have the lockup problems and graphic distortions earlier they looked more like that shown by Hawggy. I use a NVidia FX 5700 Ultra 128 mb. It appears to me that now instead of locking up and graphicly distorting during a pause I simply get kicked off the server instead. But just guessing.

I'm getting the same thing, and nothing on my system over heats. My Asus version of the 9800Pro 256MB card is modified with two heatsink fans.
I installed a latest driver selection posted on a thread here, and my water turned into sycodelic rambow effects. I sent screenies to Oleg. But I went back to a slightly older driver and it fixed it. But the stutters and freezes seem to be more frequent now, even off-line.

Got word from another thread here on this forum from DangerForward suggesting ATi users to set their Catalyst AI to HIGH, or ADVANCED, or whatever. I played for FOUR hours straight last night with no problems. Last month, I couldn't fly for 30 minutes w/o this happening EVERY other flight.

Oh yeah, Oleg has reported that ATi knows about this issue, and they're gonna see what they can do.

Now, as far as you nVidia users (M_S_W), I don't what to tell ya. If these graphic freezes are lookin' the same, well, we're on to something bigger here than just broken Cat drivers, aren't we? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif

Hey, Infernal - PLEASE don't mention HL2 man!! That stutter issue and this graphic bug put together have driven me up the WALL!!! Don't remind me about HL2!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

Ok guys ATI and NVIDIA MIGHT look to be different or similar graphic issues but you have to realize one thing, the 6800 seris and the newer 9800 both implement HLSL (rendermonkey/Cg) in their OGL/DX driver extensions. And to top this off, HLSL is now in PF and was not or was not fully implemented in FB/AEP.

How this manifests will definitely differ. This is why I strongly recommend to START recording all TRACKS in all your games. Why? So you will know if the issue is LAG or something in the game or video. HOw do you find out? By playing the TRACK offline and see if the distortions and such happens in the same place!

In my case it happened consistently for 6 times I loaded the TRACK I recorded and it happened at exactly the same time. It was solved by going back a few nvidia drivers to an old WHQL 61.76 that seems ot be geared more for my video card GPU (yours might differ so read nVidia's PDF):

http://download.nvidia.com/Windows/61.76/61.76_Quadro_Release_60_Graphics_Display_Property_ Users_Guide..pdf

I know this PDF is for Quadro users but look at the first few pages where they showed which video card share the same GPU (NV-XX number). This helps in determining if your video card is using the driver best optimized for its GPU. See page 20-22.

After switching back to 61.76 for me the TRACK that cosnsitently has distortions and stutters galore disappeared and tried it online over the weekaend and they worked better. There is still some lag but nothing out of the ordinary. before it would have graphic distrotions and stutters lasting into minutes until I pass that particular area of the map! This is why it is important to record TRACKS.

Update...tried the suggestion on changing sun Java versions from 5.0 to 1.4.2.06...no change in symptoms, whatsoever.

Also tried 61.76...instant lock-up, even in FMB.

Zneg1, could you please explain the statement "...both implement HLSL (rendermonkey/Cg) in their OGL/DX driver extensions. And to top this off, HLSL is now in PF and was not or was not fully implemented in FB/AEP."

Still searching for the illusive stability fix.

Same problem here. However the lock-ups seem to always occur when I switch views in the cockpit ie. look behind etc. Only since the 3.0lm, I'm not running the 3.02b. -P4 2.8, ATI 9800/128

New bug! Woohoo!

Actually, I think it's the same bug, only my game doesn't crash anymore. The only thing I changed was to rename the "bin" folder to "binbak", so as to disable the Java VM. This is what happened after playing a couple of coop missions generated with the DCG (approx. 2 hours):

http://users.skynet.be/67/pf/fbbug1.jpg
http://users.skynet.be/67/pf/fbbug2.jpg

The game didn't freeze up this time, obviously.

Signs pointing to Java now?

By the way, I'm using the Catalyst 4.8 atioglxx.dll. If I try to use the new 4.11 or 4.12b, all my models are untextured. Yes, even with default video card settings.

And just in case you're wondering: I can't register under my callsign, as it's considered a swearword around here. Geez. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

Hi there,

seems that i'm not the only one with this problem.
Last night, i was hosting a coop,
when suddenly(when i was chasing a BF 110)my screen froze.
After about 15 till 20 sec later i saw my plane exploding into the forrest, when the second froze came up.
So,when the freeze was up,the game was still going on.
The other players didn't encounter any problems on that moment, and they continued the coop.
I had never this problem before until i patched PF(merged) into 3.02bm.
I dont know if its the AI in the Cat driver, becuz i use the cat 4.11 without CCC.

Greetings

I'm getting what seems like a similar issue. During online play, a few times the screen will freeze but it seems like the mission continues. The sound will intermittenly come back and I'll hear radio chatter and engine noise. Most of the time the engine noise increases because I think my plane is still flying around in the game, just that I've lost graphic display. I can get to the task manager to close the program though this takes a great deal of time. I've only got the flourescent colours once when I hit the ground. I've got a P4 3.06 HT 1GB Mushkin 3500 RAM PNY 6800 GT 256 and some real old SCSI equipment from my first build. I'm using 3.02bm.

Mainly I'd jsut like to add that I get the sound and what appears to be like the game still running even though the graphics don't update. I've never left this alone long enough to see if it will recover, I must admit. But I highly doubt it.

Absolutely the same symptoms I am seeing...graphics fails, game continues running, for at least several minutes. I have an Nvidia card and others with same symptoms have ATI's.

I still think this is a Java issue, but can't seem to get anyone who has a knowledge of Java to address it...any takers?

ATi users ACHTUNG:

Roll back to the 4.10's for best stability. Catalyst AI does help with frames.

For the Nvidia users, my BFG 6800GT OC seems to like the 66.81 WHQL drivers the best. As SteveV stated in one of his posts on the tech forum, these seem to have the best stability. Since switching to these drivers I have not had a crash, but have not had a chance to do exhaustive testing.

Will keep you advised.

Is there anyone who could make a track with the bug available for others to test? I track right about everything and yet it always seems to happen just when I'm not tracking...

A question to all ATI users getting the freezes:

Are you all running Perfect?

I've heard that running Excellent might actually do the trick, but I'm very reluctant to give up the water (even though I only run at water=0).

I run the game in perfect settings.

Last wednesday,i was flying a coop, and got a freez in 2 of the 3 missions.
Lucky, i was recording 1 of these missions with a freez.
But i wasn't able to look the track file.
It gave me an error when i was trying to load;

Track file 'Records/quick 0001.ntrk' load failed:Illegal Capacity:-67075335

I have sended this track file, with also the mission file, dxdiag and the config.ini to the developers of the game.
Maybe they can get some info, about this freez, out of it.

Nice job highlighting the issue.Same problems here after I did a format and a clean install.I`m not bothering to fire up the game cuz those stutters are MAJOR show stopper,I`m not getting anything like this in any other game.

After getting some virus on my computer, last weekend,i formatted the hd,and was putting back windows and drivers, the whole sunday(19/12/04).

But,now that i have a fresh computer, i didn't encounter the freeze again(did alot of coop, some dogfights and a few airraces).

The things that are changed on my computer are as follows;
Installed SP2, i didn't use it before.
Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS drivers only.
AND, i dont use the Java(TM)2 Platform Standard Edition binary, Version: 1.5.0.0

Everthing else is still the same.
Just wanted to let you know..

Ok somebody wants clarification on the HLSL and other things. The new 'water' effects and other things in PF uses newer OpenGL/directX extensions that uses 'High level shading language' to achieve. These are mainly an 'shader extension' of the graphics capabilities that started with 'light and transform' effects of the earlier GeForce series (GF3-GF4). Now nvidia calls theirs 'Cg' while ATI calls their API package as 'rendermonkey'.

In FB/AEP the shader extension are not fully implemented to be fully compatible with older GPU (graphics processing unit) but with the full implementation using Shder 2.0/3.0 extensions, this would require newers drivers to fully take advantage of it. The problem with this is that NOT all of the older GPU would be able to handle this and depedning on HOW the shader extensions are implemneted in PF as well as HOW they are HANDLED in the video driver, we would always see some kind of distrotion and stutters and what not. Not to mention that fact that nVidia and ATI keeps tweaking the drivers for every release making it harder to see which one works well.

Now a good rule of thumb for me is to use a WHQL video drv that si release for the specific GPU i am using so for older nVidia cards like the 5600/5700 or GF4 Ti4800 this means 56.72 or even 61.76. Newer cards like the 6800Ultra will need the latest.

I directly asked Oleg about this JAVA thing and I was informed that the IL-2 series including PF uses ITS OWN JAVA implementation so using the different iterations of JAVA around does not affect the game.

I however have resorted to using 71.20 since my GPU is based on the NV35 series and have had minimal problems so far and I also have flown with some problems with 67.20 in OGL mode but did not happen with all maps.

I hope this clarifies what i was trying to explain http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Exact same problem.Have rolled back to 4.10 (from 4.12)to see if that fixes it.Also get problems with texture corruption sometimes at the start of a new mission/map in servers. Its not heat as it happens to others at exact same time (with 9800PRO graphics card)this never happened to me before 3.03

I would first try to see if your issue is a TEMP issue in the CPU as well as in the video card. This means play with your computer case open and then try a FAn to see if that alleviates the cooling situation. If you computer performs better with the case off and the fan blwoing in, then it is a CPU or video card temp issue.

Next would be to try really old video drivers pre-5x. series and see if your gameplay improves. Also try the newer 71.20 drivers.

Then try to play without any sound or the sound acceleration down to minimal or safe setting in ILSETUP as well as in DXDIAG.

LASTLY install PF on another folder stand alone and patch it and see if its behavior is any different from the MERGED version.

I would also start RECORDING tracks so you cna playback on the exact same sequence to see if particular areas or maps results in the stutter/distortion everytime and also this serves as a benchmark for your situation since you are playing back exactly the same things over and over as you change things around in your configuration.

I dont know what else to suggest since we have to know exactly how 1C:Maddox implemented the HLSL in PF and if that is the issue at hand. There could be others.

NO WAIT STOP, i've GOT it.... i have just dragged the biggest furball out of my graphics card fan which as it happens dont work anymore. my good man JG5_Unkle also suggested cpu temp, but i have a huge fan and leave the side of the case off when playing il2.... conclusion: all my fans have dragged one of the local cats into my card and buggered my game up http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif thank you for your advise Zneg, uther i'm off to buy a new card http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif see you in the air

oh that's too bad!!! The 71.20 driver really worled wonderfully for me and virtually elminated the long stutters and graphic distortions that happened with 3.02bm and 3.03m

I would like to concur that I have seen the same crash described by poster ONLY since the new patch. It is not a consistent crash and can sometimes not happen at all throughout hours of gameplay.

but its happened twice since the new patch and ive never seen it since IL2 Original release. actually never seen it in any game ever.

Im on HT also, btw - perhaps thats the clue?
