I know its not full real but when dogfighting online I enjoy unlimited ammo from time to time. But what I dont enjoy are the idiots who fly around with the trigeer held down firing nonstop as they go! same for bombers that drop bombs nonstop! this is not only completely unrealistic but lags up the game something fierce. Would it be possible to incooperate a "barrel Overheat" setting which would come on if the guns were fired for more then 3 seconds and if they do overheat the moron won't be able to fire his guns until they cool down..like say 3 seconds later. I feel this would give the benefit of flying all day if you're good but limit those "sprayers" who ruin the game for everyone" at least would still have to aim to hit the enemy..

Bump for this!

This would, I think, be fairly easy to include - there's already code related to engine overheat that takes into account air temp, sustained damage at heat level, effect of windspeed on cooling, etc. And each gun on the planes is modelled individually for the purposes of the damage model.

Surely this wouldn't be too hard a feature to add.

On 'arcade' style dogfight servers, planes like the Yak3 end up needing to replane every 5 kills, since there's just not enough ammo for more, I find.

This wouldn't just be a useful feature for those maps though - coding the AI to stop shooting every few seconds to avoid gun damage might make them a bit more formidable and remove the stupid slow-drag-pursuit tactic used to run the AI out of ammo.

I can't see the 'full metal testicles' full real crowd complaining about more realism with regard to gun barrel overheat either.

Great idea.

That would be a nice feature, but I don't see how it could be implimented in a way that is realistic.

Because you'd essentially have to get accurate historical info on the overheating tendancies of every gun in FB. Not only that, but each plane would have different cooling.

Just having a simplified overheat feature with made up numbers would suck. Ppl would whine that their gun overheats too fast etc, and rightfully so, if the values are made up.

But then, if its just for unlimited ammo servers, it could be usefull, not as a realism option, but just to prevent spray+praying.

It's a matter of opinion, really.

It's like other things in the game: FB doesn't model torque, since it can't be done 'right'. So there's no torque at all, and you can floor a P47 from idle and have it give a tiny 2 degree wobble. That's so much more realistic :>

Seriously, would anyone object to a hard limit of say 3 or 5 seconds for firing one burst from gun? What kind of aircraft mounted gun could do sustained firing longer than that which you know of?
