It looks cool, but I prefer to pay for my games only once.

I was wondering about this game myself. If it's good, the price really is not that bad. $50 bucks for 6 months is more than fair if you play regularly. Anyone here play it?

I'll play it when I get internet access that isn't Pay-per-meg. The cost if for getting to use a high quality server with hundreds of players, and it's cheaper than WBIII.

Terrain isn't crash hot. They have pixel-shaded water but the fog sets in early and the rest isn't detailed. On the other hand, there's a lot of planes, and they look good. MG flashes are smaller than FB, but cannon flashes are as big or bigger. Planes fly okay, not as interesting as FB, but good enough. Lag effects are not very noticeable in the free trial version. Damage modelling is okay but nowhere near FB.

So in other words its not as good as FB, and it could cost up to $100.00 per year to fly it online. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

what...$7.50 a month.... a lot of money? I don't know about the USA but over here in Britain, that's about the cost of one pack of cigarettes.....per month, or two pints of beer (down south http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I don't play FA at all, FB is much better as a sim, and the other online game I play is Air Attack, which is a whole lot different. Lots of fun, never mind the lack of realism!

Well after a 500MB download, here is my report on FA 3.6

Graphics. Its CFS3 level. Textures are poor. At least CFS3 had bad models and good textures. They do have some texture effects that I like, but they are not well implamented. Landscape is bland. Wateris VERY bad. Its like flying over a river of murcurey not water. Cockpits are functional, but they are all CFS3 level. All gunner stations are just crosshairs with no cockpit. The aircraft are not accurate at all, but they do look LIKE what they are supposed to be. The 109 is to wide and the 190 is just FAT.

Sound. VERY poor. Only two gun sounds. MG and cannon. A 7.62 sounds like a .50 cal, and 20MM sound like a 57MM mossy gun. Explosions are a generic sound. Engines, you cant tell one from another. Radials do sound differant then inlines, but thats all.

FM. Lousy, but not as bad as CSF3. The big aircraft do have mass to them, but there is no torque, stall, flutter or any advanced FM.

DM. No visible DM at all. You do get text messages that you are hit and in what area, and a % meter counts up from 0 to 100%. 100% and your gone. If your hit on the left wing, you start to lean a little to the left. Its very very basic. You cant take out an engine or blow off parts of aircraft like in IL2 or even CSF3.

Gameplay. I LOVED FA 1.0 and 2.0 because it was fun, not accurate. I did not play online. I was just doing the stand-alone free flight. It feels very much like FA 1.0 and 2.0. Arcade fun. But with a LOT more aircraft. There is also resources involved in the online play. The enemy can bomb your factory's and effect your fighters quality. Your team can take a cargo aircraft up and deliver resources to rebiuld the factory and restore your aircraft's quality. You can also bomb the tar out of an enemy airbase, and take troops out and capture it. The online play that I remember was very dynamic and a hell of a lot of fun when you can orginize a few people.

The main thing I like is there is a LOT of aircraft to choose from. Big bombers, medium bombers, fighters, and for US, Ge, Brits, JP, and the VVS. Almost every aircraft you ever wanted to fly is in. They went for quantity, not quality. And yes, the Pe-8 is flyable with Tu-2's.

There are some things in the game you kinda cratch your head and think "What are they smoking" like a B-17 armed with two 2250lb bombs on wing hard points? PLUS 17 100lb bombs? The 2250lb bomb has a blast like the Pe-8's 5000K bomb! Then you have a P-38 L with two 2300lb torps (never used in war) but the B-25 Mitchel can only carry 1? The 109 is VERY wide and looks just odd. But again, this game is not about making an accurate sim, but making a fun sim online.

I flew it for awhile and stopped for several reasons:

1- I actually could not tell much difference between the flight styles of the aircraft

2- the visuals both in overall terms and in tracking, engaging left much to be desired.

3- the dogfight arena's were much more of an arcade circumstance, with no ability to select a ground attack aircraft.

4- and finally I felt that I was'nt getting that much for the money, after a few times online I just sort of stopped going there for the above reasons and cancelled.

they do however have an extensive support system that is well organinzed.

yep I played FA 1.0 & 2.0 untill my subscriptions went out. it's what i was looking for when i bought IL-2. I can remember standing in Wall-mart thinking.

"gee i want a new game...but what? that wwII airplane game was fun.......hmmmm...ok Combat flight simulator 2....yeah ok this will do,,,,,oh wait....there's another one! IL-2 Sturmovik....Sounds russain......hey it's damn near 10 bucks cheaper! Screw micro$oft i'm goning with the Russain game it looks just as fun"

So FA opended the door to flight sims for me. Even if it is very arcadish & you have to pay to play. But like others have said i would rather pay for it once. Addons are differant. Sure it's the same game .....but with add ons your actually getting something xtra for you money and so it seems like an investment.

The sad thing i's that FB may be my last flight sim. I'll have to wait & see what is going to be avalible with BOB.
Basically i have no interst in a game that's going to be a compleate Euro-feast. No us aircaft is just no fun for me.
I'm not trying to flame i'm just saying that it's no fun for me personaly. SO we'll see.
If BOB is not what i'm looking for then im sure i'll wind up playing Olegs WWII RTS. I always loved RTS games anyway.

Hi Falcon-41,

I used to play one of the early versions of " Fighter Ace" and gave up on it after awhile because of all the hackers online.I could never shoot some of them down and now some of those same flyers are playing " FB" and they aint worth two noobs of goat s**t without their hacks to cheat with.Imo "FB" IS SO FAR OUT IN FRONT it's not funny but you make up your own mind, you got nothing to lose but if you do fly it on a regular basis you might pick up some bad flying habits owing to its poor "FM" and try using those tactics in"FB".

Well, I downloaded the demo and played it for a while to see what it was really like.

Pros: They have incorporated some refreshing features. Cockpits open when you land; head movement; when you are loading up your plane they use sliders for fuel and to indicate weight of plane. They also use sliders for gun convergence. Basically a better interface. Not a big deal, but its nice.
Some nice graphics, if dated. I like the metallic glare off the planes, even though the shadowing needs some work. The water actually looks pretty good.

Cons: Most of the graphics are definitely not cutting edge. Cockpits and ground effects are maybe the two worst.
Questionable flight "physics". Not flight models, but the planes just wouldn't react the way they should have in many situations, stalling in particular.
Weapon loadouts were a bit strange, as Gibbage noted.

Overall? Not a bad game really, but i'll stick with FB. If I played FB online more, I might actually consider FA, they are updating it all the time after all, but for me FB is without question a better game.

Not too shabby for arcade style of play, Has a nice tracking system of points and all types of rankings for players. From Terrritorial Conquest, Dogfighting, Destruction and the list goes on and on.
I think it is more driven for avid players that are driven by ego to obtain the highest amount of points (Natural Competition in any game)
You can get caught up in the game and have it basically run your life like a bad addiction (Pay to play/ Or be dethroned from the top dog list)
I honestly do not see too many who play that game complain about Flight Modeling or athstetics. They are all focused on getting points in huge rooms with tons of buzzing aircraft.
Personally, I think it was rather clever by producing a game and keep ya hooked via ego, and I bet many who play don't get much sleep pondering the thought that someone is in there closing the gap of your points.
