I managed to snatch the PC-demo yesterday (phew was there traffic!), and it installed just fine. However, it won't run. I double-click the icon, the mouse pointer turns into the wait pointer, and then turns back into the regular mouse pointer. No game, and taskmanager reports no programs running. Sometimes, there's a brief flash of a small info-box (like the one in Uru that says "Starting Uru" or somesuch) before the pointer reverts, but it flashes too quick for me to read.

The specs for my machine is as desired in the "washing list" of supported systems, in particular, the graphics card is an NVIDIA FX 5900 XT. What other information do you need or is this a known problem card?

Since I use demos to see if a game will run on my hardware it is in both your and my interest to solve this http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif (especially as I haven't pirated a game since they could comfortably fit on a single floppy http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif and is very active at pestering my local game stores into carrying the games I like [and it works, too!]) Luckily I do have access to a year old iMac, though testing it there means having to bribe its owner. Hmmm I think there's buttercookies in the cupboard...

You may have a corrupted demo download, especially if you used a "download accelerator" utility. Did you have any problems while downloading, like a download interruption and resume? If so, you may need to re-download. (I downloaded from gamershell.com (http://www.gamershell.com/download_10415.shtml).)

Do you have the latest NVIDIA driver installed for your FX 5900XT? Assuming you're running Win XP, it's version 77.77, available here (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_77.77.html). Before downloading and installing the driver, read the Driver Installation Hints Document (http://www.nvidia.com/object/driver_installation_hints.html).

Also, try re-installing the demo, by doing the following in the order shown:

1. Use Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the demo, then reboot.

2. Use your anti-virus software to do a complete scan of your hard drive. This is the 'start it and let it crank' type of scan, not the bootup quickie!

Then, do complete spyware and adware scans of the drive. I regularly use, and recommend:
-- Spybot - Search & Destroy (http://spybot.safer-networking.de/en/download/index.html)
-- Ad-aware SE Personal Edition (http://lavasoft.element5.com/software/)

Both have free versions!

3. Clear your Internet Explorer caches:
-- a. Close all open applications.
-- b. Open a single Internet Explorer session.
-- c. Click on Tools > Internet Options.
-- d. Click on Delete Cookies > OK.
-- e. Click on Delete Files (check the 'Delete all offline content' box) > OK.
-- f. Click on Clear History > Yes.
-- g. Click on OK to exit.

4. Use Windows Explorer to search your hard drive for \temp, \tmp, and \temporary folders, and delete any files in these folders that aren't currently in use:
-- a. Click on Tools > Find > Files or Folders.
-- b. Type temp or tmp or temporary in the Named: box.
-- c. Click on the arrow at the right end of the Look in: box and then click on the disk drive to be searched.
-- d. Click on Find Now to start the search.
-- e. Click on the temp (or tmp or temporary) folders found to open them.
-- f. Delete any files in these folders that aren't currently in use.
-- g. Close Windows Explorer.

5. Re-install the demo. (Be certain to log into Windows with full Administrator privileges.)
-- a. Disable your anti-virus software.
-- b. Click on Start > Run and browse to the demo installer (mystvdemo.exe).
-- c. Double-click on the file to put it in the Open: box.
-- d. Click on OK to start the installation process.
-- e. Reboot when installation is complete.

Don't forget to re-enable your anti-virus software!

If none of the above help, post back and we'll go from there.

BTW, Ubisoft only sponsors these Forums and does NOT run them. We're all volunteers and interested gamers who want to help, exchange ideas, etc.

Comments:

-- There's no place to which to move your other topic that would do any good, if what you're intending is to get Ubisoft's or Cyan's attention.

-- Your other topic is titled "Disappointed at Myst 5 Performance". Don't forget/overlook/ignore the fact that this is...only...the...demo! It's obviously not completely optimized, and the code included is very probably from early versions of the full game. Frame rates, AF/AA performance, etc., etc., aren't good on some systems, but that's not unusual for a demo. Bottom line, don't expect the demo to play like the release version of the game!

-- At this point, the game has gone gold, so significant code changes aimed at optimization won't be made before commercial release. There may well be patches after release, of course.

-- The commercial release version of Myst V will be optimized to the full extent of Cyan's capabilities and available resources. This is the last hurrah for the Myst series - they'll give it a full-court press, to go out in a cloud of glory if for no other reason.

I fully expect the release version to play *a whole bunch* better than the demo! And I'll buy Myst V: End of Ages Limited Edition (http://store.ubi.com/item.jsp?item=69252) as a keepsake and remembrance.

Problem i am having is that when the game starts up from the video part when the ubi symble pops up, the screen goes wonky. the ubi soft symble looks almost fine but there is a static flashing that pulses with different colors over the symble, also with the cyan vid.

When the game loads up and im standing there the whole game is a graphics glitch, and my mouse is a square with lots of meshed colors on that square.

I do have the most updated drivers and i had a clean download and install.

I have a nvidia GF 6800 vid card.

I think that i will try and install the game in a different folder, it might be having trouble being in the regular programs folder with all the other games i have in it. Or i will try and turn off a few features like mouse shadow. If push comes to shove, i will have to recheck my bios settings, this would not be the first time that pny has changed settings for there vid cards.

Naquiel,

If your system meets the Myst V requirements, you ought not to be having those problems with the demo.

Maybe you have a hardware and/or driver problem. If you'll post a DxDiag report in this Forum, we'll take a look at your system and make recommendations. See Posting Guidelines and Myst V System Requirements (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3471054943/m/4941067943) under POSTING GUIDELINES, To post a DxDiag report for a how-to. Run all of the graphics and sound tests you can before saving the report to a file, and post *all* of the file.

Suggestions:

1. If you're overclocking, reset everything to OEM specs.

2. If your GeForce 6800 requires a separate power connector, make certain that your power supply has sufficient capacity for everything you're running.

3. If you haven't already done so, download and install the latest motherboard chipset drivers from the PC or motherboard manufacturer's website.

4. If you have an Intel Extreme video chipset integrated on your motherboard and have not gone into the system BIOS to disable onboard video, you should definitely do so. Conflicts between onboard video and separate-card video chipsets can cause the sort of problems you're having.

Or, while disabling an onboard chipset in the BIOS is much preferable, you can also:
-- a. Right-click My Computer and select Properties.
-- b. Click on the Hardware tab, and then click on the Device Manager button.
-- c. Click on View > Show Hidden Devices.
-- d. Click the Plus (+) sign next to the Display Adapters category to expand it.
-- e. Select the onboard graphics controller under Display Adapters, and click on Disable.
-- f. Click on OK to confirm.
-- f. After the onboard controller is disabled, close everything back to the Desktop, then shut down your PC.
-- g. Power up and reboot into normal Windows.

5. Set these line items in your system BIOS (if the BIOS has them) as follows:
-- a. Assign IRQ to VGA - Enabled
-- b. VGA palette snooping - Disabled
-- c. PCI Latency Timer - 128
-- d. Video BIOS Shadowing - Disabled
-- e. Video RAM Shadowing - Disabled
-- f. Uncacheable Speculative Write Combining (USWC) Options - All disabled
-- g. PnP O/S Installed - Enabled
-- h. Video BIOS Cacheable - Disabled
-- i. Video RAM Cacheable - Disabled
-- j. AGP Graphics Aperture - 128 MB (or the next lowest available if 128 MB isn't an option)
-- k. AGP Fast Write - Disabled

6. You should have installed the version 77.77 NVIDIA driver after first uninstalling the existing driver. See Myst V: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3471054943/m/9071035163) for details.

7. Do step 2 in Myst V: Miscellaneous Video Problem Fixes (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3471054943/m/9271033704).

8. Set your Desktop screen resolution to 800x600 or 1024x768, and a 72 Hz refresh rate if possible, then start the demo.

9. Use Windows Task Manager to close everything except for Explorer.exe, Ctfmon.exe, and whatever your hardware needs before starting the demo. See step 4 in Myst V: Miscellaneous Video Problem Fixes (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3471054943/m/9271033704) for details.

For me, when I double-click the shortcut on my desktop, the window that gives the options to "uninstal, "play", "languages, and "exit" works fine. Then, I press "Play" and an error window pops up that is titled "Myst V No_cd_dvd" and the error says " A required security module cannot be activated. This program can not be executed.". That doesn't make any sense. the No_cd_dvd part especially, for obvious reasons.

Nintengod - please start another topic (aka " Discussion") in this Forum. You've got a whole 'nother problem!

Naquiel - if you have any virtual drives being installed, like by CD/DVD burning software, disable (or even better, don't install) these drives before starting the demo. If you have a program like Alcohol 120% installed, you may have to uninstall it/them.

Nope. no on those to. I dont know why its doing what it does. Maybe i got a bad corupted download from fileplanet. I will try to get a different demo from another source just to make sure.

I had no problems with Myst 1-4, and i had no problems with UrU and all its expantions ether. its just that this time, the demo is just all messed up.

As a computer nut, im paranoid on what i put on my computer. I dont use accelarators mostly because i know i will get the downloads i need, and i dont download much in the first place.

It might be that i have to many other games in my programs folder that might be freaking out the demo also so im going to try putting it in its own folder to see how it works out.

I have no spyware or viruses. Its just driving me crazy.

Well i checked my settings, re installed it a few more times(one of the times i guess didnt let me uninstall so i had to go at it and delete everything by hand.

But befor i gave up i did get the game to play for me for 30 sec befor it rebooted my comp, and that was when i turned off the shadow feature of my mouse pointer. In the video of the ubi soft symble or cyan animation i still got muticolored random spots that pulsed on the screen when they played still and i dont know why.

So im giving up on the demo. Im just hoping that this demo really didnt have much of any major troubleshooting befor it went out, and that i hope the acctule retail game will not have these problems.

At this point, with as much as you've done and especially since you've had problems uninstalling, you should:

1. Check your hard drive for errors. Refer to How to Perform Disk Error Checking in Windows XP (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315265&Product=winxp). Another option is Norton SystemWorks 2005's Disk Doctor (http://www.symantec.com/sabu/sysworks/basic/).

2. Defragment your hard drive. Refer to How To Analyze and Defragment a Disk in Windows XP (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305781&Product=winxp) and How to Defragment Your Disk Drive Volumes in Windows XP (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314848&Product=winxp). Executive Software's Diskeeper 9.0 (http://www.execsoft.com/diskeeper/desktops.asp) is another option.

3. Check your Registry for errors. Some registry diagnosis and repair tool options (all of which I use) are:
-- Symantec's Norton SystemWorks 2005 (http://www.symantec.com/sabu/sysworks/basic/) WinDoctor.
-- Rose City Software's Registry First Aid 4.1 (http://www.rosecitysoftware.com/Reg1Aid/).
-- VCOM's Fix-It Utilities 6 (http://www.v-com.com/product/Fix-It_Utilities_Home.html) SystemRegistry-RegistryFixer utility.

So far as I know, Win XP doesn't have an equivalent built-in Registry tool. Run whichever tool you use until no more errors are discovered, and reboot when finished.

It works for me now, turns out both Java and Dx9 was garbled. Fixed that, and now it runs like a charm. Looking forward to the full product!

For the record, DirectX 9.0c is available here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a9b6820-bfbb-4799-9908-d418cdeac197&DisplayLang=en). Install and reboot.

Also, to re-install Java from a clean boot, see Myst V: Java-related Installation Problem Fixes (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3471054943/m/1361061163).

The demo would not run for my father-in-law, but all was good after we installed Java 1.5 from Sun's site. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
