Anyone remember the "Enemy Ace" comics from DC? This is a skin of Hans Von Hammer's crimson 109F4.

Always loved both the comic and the aircraft, so thought I might take a shot at knocking one out for the game.

It's my first IL-2 skin (featuring very heavy use of Jester's Ink's amazing template) so any comments or suggestions very welcome.

Nope, I haven't, but I can if you like. I am pretty new here. Where should I put it?

Wow, "Enemy Ace" I have been looking everywhere for another one of those comics ever since I got a split edition of Sgt Rock and Enemy ace as a kid... Never found one sadly so I guessed it was just a one off.

Thanks for reminding me von G, I'm off to google!

The person who drew the von Hammer strip obviously really likes WW2 warbirds. The design and detail of the 109 seem spot on!

Enemy Ace was created by the same writer (Robert Kanigher) that created Sgt. Rock, Haunted Tank, Unknown Soldier, and many others in a universe of DC war stories. From the late 1950s through about the 1970s Kanigher wrote for a comic title "Our Army At War." It was in this book that Sgt. Rock and others were created as 'one offs' and sometimes became more or less rreoccurring characters. Kanigher's strips were usually illustrated by Joe Kubert, an artist whose penchant for distinguishing iconography over historic accuracy lead to details like Enemy Ace's winged mask and Sgt. Rock's 'lucky' .50 bandoliers.

Various minor characters like 'Haunted Tank' branched out to become their own books, but Sgt. Rock became a staple and then the headliner of "Our Army At War." Eventually, the book simply changed its name to "Sgt. Rock" sometime in the late 1970s or early 80s.

Enemy Ace stories are usually found in the second half of old books like "Our Army at War" and "G.I. Combat," the title that usually featured The Unknown Soldier and The Haunted Tank. He might also have been used to fill the pages of "Wierd War Stories." I don't think he ever had his own title though.

Its funny for me, to see all the interest this comicbook is receiving now...I remember reading this series 5 or 6 years ago. I remember reading it around the time I got my new computer (and playing IL2 became a lot more fun). Back then I couldn't find anyone who was reading it...

Wow, it seems we have more (von) Hammers than Homehardward recently!
Still, choice is good and there are some great Hammer skins out there!

I couldnt help notice that even though all the skinners are working from the same source, each of the skins I have seen is a bit different. In looking at the link to the actual comic (http://bobbarker31.livejournal.com/210917.html) I think I realize what some of the difference are due to - the comic itself is a bit inconsistent, even the bird on the cowl seems to be different on each side (looks like a falcon on the right but an eagle on the left)!

So I went back to the skin I had made, to see if I couldn't tune it as close to the comic as possible (two birds and all!)
