SH4 Dev Team:
We estimate Silent Hunter 3 sold over 300,000 copies worldwide.

Wow! I was under the impression it was a lot less than that.

So SH4 will be more expandable, have improved multiplayer (with human control of enemy escorts), have cutting edge graphics, allow proficient players to take part in historical events/battles, have much more radio/activity, different patrol types, include better crew management....

...But still no fully explorable sub interior. That's a surprise after so many people asked for it, but I guess that's a fair trade-off for other features that will have more impact on gameplay.

SH4 is going to be great!

I keep hoping that somehow we will be able to continue the Atlantic War with the SH4 engine and all of its improvements.

Subsim: Another thing that US subs had to contend with that was not a factor for U-boats was the phosphorescence of sub and torpedo wakes. In certain areas, at certain times, US subs at high speed would leave a glowing trail. Does the dev team want to get this in the game?

Wrong . http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

U-boats had indeed the same problem for example in the mid-terranean sea !

Why did Subsim get the interview scoop? I've said this before, ARE WE NOT the official UBI forum or what?

What fantastic marketing. One finger up at your most loyal customers - those on your OWN forum. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

Rant over.

RJ, you are correct, but I suppose at this stage the game developers want Ubi to witness them getting their butts kissed, not kicked.
On subsim, it seems the kissing takes place, on our forum, they will be told of any mistakes made (although not in a rude way).
I'm a bit upset that they have not modelled the walk-through for the boats. The same engine etc would be more than passable.
This really does seem like it would make a better add-on to SHIII

I remain skeptical.

Lower expectations = smaller disappointment.

To model the proverbial "reality" is impossible and all games are subject to $$$ constraints. After all, it's nothing but a project where the returns (sales) have to outperform costs (development, marketing etc...)

As such, expect good and bad....
(I remain cold and unimpressed)

I'm with kac4all there.
I'm having real problems trying to imagine how they could make it as interesting/fun as the battle of the atlantic.
Of course i hope to be proved wrong and will be buying the game anyway.

After you have shelled out your money let me know which promised bits arn't included.

No point both of us being diddled.
However I do have my fingers crossed.

Oh God, here we go with site A is better than site B garbage again. You know the reason that subsim got the interview could be the fact that the owner of the site is very pro-active with the developers. You know the Silent Hunter 3 communtiy could be so much more with a positive relationship with Subsim than a negative one.

Well I posted my views in the subsim forum and, at first, I had some support but I was soon chewed out for my two cents worth. I'd figure I'd post it again in the much loved SH3 ubi forums http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Well here are the downers for SH4 for me:

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">Duchiron, 41, France: Did you plan to add a human manned destroyer (aka Destroyer Command 2) to SH4?

SH4 Dev Team: Not direct control, but as you can see in another answer above, we plan of giving command of enemy escort forces €" during multiplayer €" to a human.

I wanted to be on the bridge of the destroyer or on the depth charge racks so this is a real set back.

Ken Ho, 31, Japan: Can a Japanese submarine be controlled?

SH4 Dev Team: Negative, Japanese submarines will not be player controllable for SHIV.

Talk about lump sided.

David Drysdale, 28, Canada: I loved the 3d rendered control room, it really added to the atmosphere. Will you be expanding the amount internal 3d locations in the sub?

SH4 Dev Team: For now, the stations will remain the same. We still believe that captain€s job keeps him in the command and attack center of the sub most of the time. Would it be cool to be able to walk the whole sub and watch Torpedomates do their job? Yes! But at what cost in development?

Does this sound like SH3 with a few improvements ?

Sorry for being harsh but I expected more out of SH4 and so far it died out pretty quickly for me.

The sad part is is that it is still in development which means that they can cut any of the good stuff, like the radio traffic, out just to get the game out on time. If they want to make the game worth every penny they have to go the extra mile.

Don't you ever give up? I handed you an olive branch in the last thread where we locked horns, if you'd care to look.
You never responded, then jumped on my head for my expressing an opinion.
If someone makes an appology, it is customary to at least acknowledge

Vamandrac_Steam

You offered the olive branch and then turned around and bashed Subsim. Does seem like too much of a kind gesture on your end.

hueywolf123
08-23-2006, 08:30 PM
Are you subsim himself?

Vamandrac_Steam

No, but then again I dont sit around on the Subsim forums and bash this forum.

hueywolf123
08-23-2006, 08:49 PM
Point taken and if I said anything untoward, I do appologise. I have no intention to annoy/insult anyone. I too frequent subsim, and have seen things said there about this forum. Not very kind things either, but this was not a 'get square' comment.
Once again, I appologise, but then ask if when certain subsim members make not-so-flattering comments about this forum and it's members - do you launch into them as fast as you do here?

@ Hueywolf - please stop generalising about this forum vs. subsim. It's of no use to anyone and just provokes pointless arguments and bad feeling.

@ StukaKing - please don't judge how the majority of us feel about subsim.com because of the negative opinions of a very small minority.

I wasn't having a pop at Subsim, there's some great stuff there, I was just a bit annoyed that UBI / Devs gave the scoop to someone, anyone, other than the OFFICIAL SH forum that's all.

I think it is a little early in the game to be disappointed in UBIsoft and SH4. I agree with W.S.- we all like the same things. Why not buy the game, play it and then critique it as game players. Speaking for myself, I think UBIsoft's SH3 is the best game I have ever played, once I got around the bugs. My wife's honeydo list went onhold for awhile until she started the toes-tapping-arms-folded routine on me, almost made me feel guilty!LOL! Anyway thanks UBIsoft for continuing to put out great products that we can enjoy at a moderate cost. A.M.

RJ - I think the reality is they asked the dev team for an interview, rather than being given one!

There's nothing to stop us asking the dev team for an interview with us. We just need to figure out who to contact in the first instance, so I'll do some asking around http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

So, I think we should do our own interview, with the aim of building/expanding on the info subsim have already got from the dev team. We could trawl through all the ideas in the two SH4-related stickies and pull out anything that's relevant and worth asking about. We could also ask people in the forum to submit further questions and collate the best ones.

If any of you are interested in helping me, just say the word and I'll start digging for a contact. How could they possibly say no? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I'm definitely up for helping you VK. My education was geared around journalistic writing so I'd love to be involved. My job is quite flexible and allows me considerable time at home with internet access. I can turn my hand to writing letters, have enough common sense to make 'initial approach', intelligent and productive telephone calls. I'll even make coffee for myself.

Om a side note, I did do a little research to see if interviewing Lothar Bucheim (author of Das Boot for those who aren't familiar)was a possibility via his publishers but it's only in the feasability/research phase. I'll keep you posted - I was keeping that a secret, nevermind.

If you managet to get a interview whit Lothar Bucheim that whould be realy great, I for one is realy interestet to hear more about how that goes in the future, good luck http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

to bad we dont get a manned destroyer, but I never expected that, so the new multiplayer mode sounds great.

I always expected SH4 to be about American subs not Japanese, so no dissapointments there.

about more 3d compartments, I know that whould be a realy big jobb and whould take to much time away from developtment, never expectet that either.

the graphic looks great, yeah yeah I know it aint real inngame... yet... but some of the screens of the naval battles whil be close to what we will get, and it looks great http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

and the new campagne sounds realy good and interesting.

This interwiev realy raised my expectations for SH4 much. Truth be told my expectations was pretty lov...

And thanks to all of you that participated in destroying this discussion http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

@RJ - it would be an amazing opportunity if Buchheim was happy to be interviewed. It would be difficult to not ask him too many questions.

I think the interview is a great idea but I think we have more of a chance with the dev team than Buchheim but either would be great
or both http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
