This doesn't look like a mishap, but more like a fatal accident.

Because it's a twin bomber,with what appears to be a top turret,and a solid,'rounded'(vs. glass) nose,and almost a rectangular vertical stabilizer;I'm agreeing w/ Han Freak Solo.

I wonder if it was remotely-controlled,as insanely low as it was?

I remember downloading that file from somewhere a long time ago, the filename was 'American bouncing bomb trials'

I can also confirm that this is an A-26, as I have a documentary called "The Dambuster's Raid" and they show this footage. They explain that this was a trial done by the americans who wanted to use it against ships in the pacific. According to the documentary, this plane was piloted and all onboard were killed.

IIRC 617 Dambuster Squadron almost lost an aircraft the same way in training, the tail gunner complaining about getting wet!

I believe the Fleet Air Arm also conducted trials, in an anti-shipping role. They were not at all keen on the RAF attacking the dams when they did in case the weapon fell into enemy hands. Of course, one of the Upkeep weapons did get found in one of the Lancs that was shot down on the way to the target http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif.

Once again, the Ami's have got it all wrong http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif After the dam-busters raid, they should know how to drop such a bomb safely?

1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge,
ye shall be judged: and with what
measure ye mete, it shall be measured
to you again.

Would say that would be rather obvious from the debris flying around.

Hi,

When Skunk said about the documentary, I remembered where I saw this before.

Here are a couple of clips. Im sorry that they are a bit stuttery, I changed my video drivers and theyre doing something funky to Fraps.

Anyway, the Dambusters (617) type of bomb was never used after the Dams raid. They went on to tall boys and the Tirpitz.
However 618 Sqd, who I think were on Mossies trialed a different bouncing bomb, 'Highball', it was Highball that the Americans were using trying when that unfortunate A-26 in the clip crashed in. Here it is :

And just as a matter of interest, from the same documentary, here is the German version :

regards.

Yeah my first instant impression was of an A-26, and that bomb taking off the tail was very unfortunate to say the least.
At least it looked like the crew didn't suffer, I think it was over real-quick for them.

Thanks, I'd not heard of the german attempt; and the mosquito clip looks frightening!

I know the time scale is all wrong, but imagine what a squadron of mossies so armed could have done to a fleet of invasion barges...( For that matter, I wonder how the german rocket powered version would have served in Normandy fired from fixed bunker positions if it's range was 4 km?)

Hmmmm ! what were they thinking (with that A-26) ?? they must have known of bomb-blast/debris radius factors when 'mowing the lawn'.

They died - what a statement http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif when the biggest piece that was left was maybe pieces of an engine block.

I dont think the bomb exploded. This was a test anyway so it would have been a dummy. You can see that its the water splashing up and hitting the tail section of the plane.

As stated earlier in this thread, the same happened to one of the Lancs during training. Fortunately the Lanc is so big that it only knocked off the right hand elevator.

Watch the video again..but this time follow the bomb. It never explodes. You can see it continue to bounce up and above the flight level of the aircraft after it strikes the tail.
