Adobe Photoshop is the way to go although others will work. you'll probably be able to get a lot more info on the subject over in the painter's forum.

Photo shop 7 or Paint shop pro. The former is expensive and alot of special features the laters is cheaper an easier to use. I have PSP and am learning PS7

okay, I guess what I meant to ask was how do I go about repaiting an aircraft in IL2 using, say Paint Shop Pro?

Thanks

if u are trying to make small changes you can clone out the item an then put in your small changes. If you want to say completely change the basic color that is a lot of work and better to get a template of it from IL-2 skins.com. the layered ones let you got to that part an work on it without affecting the rest of it.
