View Full Version : Oleg and Ilya talk about BoB. Video link here to Google

Guys, just so you know, the video is live at Google Video.

Please note, this is not an interview or professional video, just me chatting with Oleg and Ilya, while hand-holding my camcorder.
There are a few screen shots, but I was under instruction that I couldn't do any close-ups unless Oleg said it was OK!

I have not edited or cut the video, what you hear is what I asked and they replied.

So apologies in advance for:

Wobbly camera
Not properly cropped some missing tops of heads
Orange Cast from sodium tungsten lights
Rubbish questions and accent http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif (mine not Olegs)
Questions you aren't interested in
Taking wide-angle convertor off camera then back on again.
Background noise at the venue, although their voices are quite clear.

if you can forgive me this, and you still feel like taking a look, the link is here:

Awesome!!!

It'll be about an hour before I can see the entire thing, but I'm patiently waiting.

BTW, Puma; I saw the aerobatic event at you tube. My daughter was browsing the vids, and I did a search for IL2 videos . . . "LOOK! Daddy's in a movie here!" I said. She said "La-dee-da", or something like that http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

My bad. 48 Min.'s is the length of the movie. I'll still be sitting here tomorrow.

I did get to se the first few miutes, though. Good to know that we will eventually all have a map tool, something that was really needed in the IL2 series.

Thank you mysticpuma really nice of you to share, very informative.

Amazing what we are going to get. Full control of what you want to play at any given moment. From cockpit to AAA at a push of a button. The sise of the map they showed looked much bigger than we have now. There has really gone some thought into this sim. Mutliple planes taking of at ones, the weather ect ect. It seems that the only thing holding back 1c of making what they and we ultimatly want is the power of the computers. Like he told with the DM. He could make it so that you can see every bullet hole and the damage it inflicts but that would take all of your pc power. It will probebly be with all espects of the sim. No problem with me, it's technology holding back 1c.
It will still be a quantum leap forward of any sim today and in the future.
One thing is obvius, Oleg's drive is to be better then MicroSoft. He doesn't even have to try to do that.

Thanks for taking the trouble to post Mysticpuma http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif This is the best post on this forum for some time and answers many questions.

I have made notes on the first 50% of the video and will post the rest later. My notes are as follows:

1. Oleg clearly enjoys flying this game. He was 'locked in' flying during some of the questions http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

2. The game will not be released until late 2007.

3. The IL2 engine was made in 1998. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

4. It will be possible to jump from your aircraft on the ground and man a flak gun.

5. A squadron scramble will be possible without lining up for take off.

6. Cloud turbulance will be modelled depending on height and type of cloud.

7. Damage Model will be more accurate and it may be possible to shoot off props.

Again, nice post and thanks.

Best Regards,
MB_Avro.

4. It will be possible to jump from your aircraft on the ground and man a flak gun.

To clarify, it seems they said you will be able to jump from one unit to another directly (like in LO:MAC), not walk around outside.

You will be able to do this only if the other plane is close enough to you. Then the pilots will swap by bailing out simultaneously, like they do in Battlefield 1942.

Hmm, that's interesting. I've never played Battlefield 1942, but why would I want to swap planes, unless I was going down? Wouldn't that mean that someone would have to bail and sacrafice their plane, so I could keep flying?

I'll have to read about BF1942 and see an example of the feature. I remember in Jane's WWII Fighters, you could swap planes during a mission, usually because you were going down and you wanted to stay in the mission, but with AI planes only.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

You can't even do that in bf1942. I think this is something that *could* be turned on in multiplayer but never will (this was confirmed in the video). I believe the purpose for this is more for the single player campaign...not sure why you would want to do it but it seems to fit best in that scenario.

I remember seeing a BF42 aerobatic video where the were doing a lot of it. Bailing out from planes into other planes, from planes to jeeps, jeeps to planes. Really cool.

Shame they put Oleg and co in that dingy corridor! Why!?

Some of the best features for me:

1. The highlight shine on the Hurricanes in exterior view (look again if you missed it). Very good lighting effects there already, even without the shadows.

2. Hurricane is skinned, ready, and flyable.

2. Extrior view of your plane will bob around as if looking from another plane (like in CFS2) - I specifically asked for this a while back, so I'm thrilled about it!

3. Aerial views are very pleasing, much better than some of the previews before now.

4. Anyone can become a skinner - with templates replacing skin files. Panel lines and weathering can be left in place, just redo the colours.

5. Skins MIGHT be 4096x in size.

6. (If I heard right) anyone will be able to create and add aircraft, they just won't be flyable online (unless submitted; and approved by the team).

7. It ran on a moderate system, even if the settings were reduced (they were) it's good news. Oleg seemed to indicate that it would be easier to run on release than MSFSX was!!!!! (Not hard to beat reallly http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif).

Bad:

1. Looks like we'll have to wait for the Welllington - he said only one bomber on the Allied side (unless he was only talking about flyables).

I'm surprised the interviewer didn't ask about the trains! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gifhttp://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif

Guys many thanks for all your comments. It makes the effort all worthwhile. I?m really pleased that you took the video at face value and were more interested in the Q&A rather than how good the video was.

To be honest, I feel sort of privileged, because I have been able to speak openly with Oleg and Ilya, about issues that I have taken an interest in after reading them on the forums. I was sort of the mouthpiece for questions I have read on the forums.

Again sorry for all of you who?s questions weren?t answered, I do believe they would have talked all day, and in a way I was fortunate that the stand wasn?t busy or it may have been a very short video indeed.

Maybe it?s a theme that others could take up in the future when Oleg appears at other shows.

As you can see, they are more than approachable and not at all intimidating and love talking about their project.

To be honest, I had decided right from the start that I was fed-up hearing little pieces of information, gathered from someone who heard it from someone, etc, etc so I grabbed the camcorder and headed for the NEC. I decided that it would be better to hear it straight from the Oleg?s mouth so-to-speak, and I hoped they would let me video it.

Now in all fairness, if they had not wanted me to video the conversation, then I would have course respected their wishes, but, from the outset I asked permission to record my conversation, and as long as I didn?t do too many shots of the screens, I was more than welcomed to do so.

Oleg and Ilya have got to be in my opinion two of the most enthusiastic game/sim designers I could have ever hoped to speak to!

The passion they talk about this project has been commented on in this and other threads, and I am glad I was able to convey this in hand-held shaky cam!

I didn?t notice in the video as I was shooting it, that in the first few minutes you can see the new pilot cockpit movement that goes on (like it will in 6DoF) as the POV moves forwards/sideways and backwards in the bottom right of the frame. This effect is as the plane his buffeted by air turbulence.

The trees on the ground are incredibly detailed and no longer have the forests of disks on top of disks (you know what I mean?) J

I would publicly like to say thank you to Oleg and Ilya for all their answers and enthusiasm, and also for taking the time out to visit we enthusiasts in Britain and give me enough time to empty my thoughts and questions on them.

Guys, I really mean this it was a real pleasure to talk with you, and thank you for your time and all the effort you are putting into this next chapter in the 1C Flight Simulation genre.

Yours, Mysticpuma.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

AMazing mate!!!!!!!

Thanks soooo much.

When developers love what they are doing, you cannot fail to end up with a classic, this is why I love PC gaming so much compared to the Console Franchises where they are creating games purely for the money...

When you get people doing it for the love, you end up with real classics like

Operation Flashoint
Deus Ex 1
Counterstrike
Il2 Series
Silent Hunter
Halflife
Doom series
Elder Scrolls series
Total War Series
Neverwinter Nights
Rise OF Nations
Warhammer: Dawn OF War
Red Orchestra

And so on..

I would give 100 Tekken 8 or Grant Turismo 10 for one Il2 or Deus Ex 1.

Long live PC gaming for the innovation and for the love of it!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

It is interesting, the dimension of textures and maps will play a huge importance in the Online performance.
Like FSX witch recreate the whole planet.

Alas BOB will be limited once again to certain area on a map , so the technology is not that good I wish to be able to fly from London to berlin maybe italya via the Alpes ,i want to fly from 1940's North Africa to England etc.., But this is probably a way for peoples to be able to fly globaly with no much problem , They try to basicly make a environement controled limited area. Oleg shouldn't really compare BOB with FSX really since they have different purpose and market and technology for sure it's easy to joke around about some things but it is some how idiotic.

I want to see how BOB will look like when reaching the border of the map.. I want to see how the plane will react with the new physics and weathers, I want to see how the engine management will be and i hope it will not be like the "cadillac" style management of IL2.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Your right you can't compare FSX and BOB terrain. I understand your wanting to fly from London to Berlin and it may happen when the Storm of War series expands to the bombing campaign. By that time the average computer might be able to handle a large map with the detail Oleg puts into them.

At this time I'd much rather fly a smaller map with believable ground terrain as opposed the FSX quagmire ground textures and floating buildings down low. FSX does a great job of simulating flight at altitude. Thats the price it pays for modelling the whole planet. This might improve when we see FSX with Vista running DX10. Time will tell.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Yes I hope in BOB we can adjust in a config file the terrain loading like Lockon and FSX,i hope we will have much more tweak capabilities, As far as FSX land textures you should make your bandwith texture to a much higher number this will ovoid the problem that you talking about.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I have an O/C Conroe system with high level ram and 7900GTX that runs FSX very well. I have maxed everything out on FSX and the ground textures are the same as theyve always been in MS flight sims. Like I say its the price they pay for modelling the whole world.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Great interview - thanks to Mysticpuma for the vid and to Oleg and Ilya for taking the time to answer so many questions. Lots of interesting info - multi-monitor support, hot-swapping between planes, new skins format, much better modelling of weather and turbulence, improved tools for adding 3rd party content etc.

The live in-game stuff looked fantastic too, running on a 3 gig processor, particularly the superb ground details and vegetation. Would love to know what video card that was running on - iirc Ilya says it's "an older card" but didn't say which one exactly.

Now that I have seen the movie half way through now I must thank you MP for asking about the Gun Camera and the bullet ricochets that I have asking about for quite some time and have posted about every now and then. For the record bullets do bounce off the ground (I think most of us know this by now) if your angle of attack is low enough and they can even bounce off water. I can only hope that Oleg and team will account for this since they are going to put this in game.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I have seen this stuff personally. I used to watch the tracers bounce off the ground and see about where they would fall and go to that spot later and pick them up (albeit deformed). You could find them just lying all over the place after a session of shooting and not just the tracers but the ball ammo too.
When I was at Fort Stewart Georgia, since there are a lot of swamps there, we would do a lot of shooting across bodies of water and becuase I was getting so bored of the same old same old, I started practicing boucing the bullets off the water to hit the targets on the other side. The bullets bounced off most of the time and I was able to hit the targets most of the time. In fact, you could tell by the spray of the water if a bullet bounced off or if it went into the water. If you saw a large jet of spray shoot straight up you knew that the bullet went into the water and if you saw only a small spray or mist just around where the bullet hit you knew that it only skipped off the surface just like a stone. The point is when you hit the water fast enough it is like hitting a brick wall and stuff will bounce off of it.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I think you were wisely diplomatic, Mysticpuma2003. Talking to the guy (or anyone ) face-to-face is not the same as on a forum. You can`t just jump in there and push him about rudely with same question after question.
