If you've ever listened to a scanner, you know you can hear real-life taking place live.

Whether it's the P.D.,F.D.,EMS,or aero,if you want some "background noise",while working on another project check:

http://www.policescan.us/

On this one,Manhattan F.D. can be very interesting.
Aero freqs @ bottom.

If you want aero only,try

But if you dont want to buy a scanner, you can still hear a lot on the HF bands if youre prepared to put up waith a bit of noise. If youre lucky your existing radio may be able to pick up some of these bands, but you will need to rig up a better aerial.
There are tons of utility stations to listen to on HF, but heres a site dealing with the aero bands.

Yeah,I know what you mean about HF(SW).I've been an on and off fan of SW since I was 10y.o. or so.
Started w/ a Realistic DX-160,now have a Grundig Satellit Millenium 800 for SWL,but I'm actually a licensed ham-KB5***.
Though I haven't checked them in a few years,Shannon,Ireland Control used to be very cool on HF,lots of action.

I occasionally dig out my DX-394, blow the dust off, and have a tune around, even used it for a bit of HF WEFAX decoding (poorly mind you).
