a friend told me about effects=2, in the config file, (change it from 1), gives softer nicer smoke etc, which is nice.
wrecks framerate sometimes, and when straffin causes some nasty stutters http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

wondered if anyone used it, specialy those with SLI...

i have a AND64 3000+venice @ 2.4ghz (266fsb) 1.5gig of ram 217mhz (434) at cas2.5 and a 6800 ultra at 458/1160 (similer to 7800?)
i run at 1280x1024,32bit perfect mode, with 2xanti aliasing and the other one ive forgotten its name http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
everything in drivers set to max qualiteh http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

and, what are the other eyecandy config settings?

water 2 is not really designed to be used currently...it was a development setting that happens to work in the conf still.

waters 0,1,and 3 are the true supported for shaders 1-2-and 3

EDIT: From the tech forum

effects = 2 is designed for SLI and Multi Core CPU's in general. Really it's just a test bed for later next gen Technology.

effects = 1 is the general effects used by 75% of the community

effects = 0 removes shadows from flak bursts etc

No no...effects 2. Its different http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

No I haven't tried them pingu but they are sort of neat from the screen shots I've seen. Basically the same technique is applied to the higher detail clouds we have...much more lighting calculations going on with smoke and fire and such. Hits too hard on my system...mine is tweaked for getting the best I can out of it. But I can't push it any further on any setting.

I just tried it out then, and it does look really good...but even on my system it causes unacceptable slowdown when a plane hits the ground and the dust and smoke goes everywhere. The smoke trails look nice though http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

My system: Athlon64 X2 4400+, 1gb RAM dual channel, 7800GTX.

I use Effects=2 with no serious effect on framerate. I'm running a Pentium 3.2/2 Gb 3200 RAM/9800XT/Audigey 2 in "Perfect". FPS in the Black Death track averages 22-24. Most of the time I run around 40 FPS. I have occasional stutters over BIG cities and if there are a lot of explosions but they are few and far between.

I ran effects 2 for about a year without knowing, and always wondered why i was getting like 10 fps when i was strafing etc, well when i realised i had i on, i switched it back to 1 and got like 30 fps in the same situations. Thats when i was running a XP1700+, Nvidia5200, 512 of ram, and no sound card. These days i am living a much higher life http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

But i still use effects 1 simply caus im lazy and cant be arsed to tweak around with the game after 3 years of doing it. Water3 is nice though, as is 2.

Using effects=2 still http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif on a P4 with Geforce 4 Ti4200 128.

I have no noticable lag during normal situations. Only a huge overkill of explosions on the ground cause lag.

It looks too good to turn it off. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I think it was meant for certain generations of Pentium 4s...thats what Oleg mentioned.

That explains why it works well on the P4 systems and not well on the AMD.

I tried it P1ng, and it just slowed my frames way down for no real difference that I could notice.

Tried running Effects=2 with an SLI 7800GTX rig
And Sorry but Flashy Flickers was the result on smoke/Dust effects. IE. Black to white with Stutters!
Don't all Laugh.

http://premium1.uploadit.org/bsamania//grab0032-efx2.jpg

Bottom two arnt so clear because they're early morning mist

The Flak, fire, all smoke, water splashes, explosions just look more realistic, better form, gets my http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif..but its better ingame than these SS
