View Full Version : Choosing the right plane...

I've been thinking about my aircraft selections after trying my hand at both BnZ and TnB. I love the best of both worlds, but niether fit what I look for in my ideal airplane. I would like a plane somewhere between them.

A plane that can turn well enough to keep up with an enemy in a turning fight. It does not need to out-turn. Just to have the ability to hold it's own. Still it must have the engine to accelerate to a fair speed in short time, so to keep me from running out of steam.

I know I can't have everything, and can sacrifice a bit of firepower or armor. The most important traits are the balance of the above.

I would like suggestions of such aircraft.

You've just described a Bf109G2.

The N1K2 "George" or the Ki-84 is for sportsmen, especially the former. The George is a Zero on steroids.

I thought the Jack (A3M2, A3M5 ?)was considered to be hands-down the pick of the litter among IL2 Japanese fighters. I haven't tried a George yet, though.

P_38L either version. Plenty of speed for BnZ, use the dive breaks in a TnB fight to get a very tight turn. Just don't leave them out too long, because they will bleed off your E in a hurry. Also, with the 4x.50's and 1x20mm in the nose you don't have to worry so much about what range you are shooting at since the convergence setting doesn't really change where the bullets impact by very much.

The '38 is not easy to fly, but may be one of the most under-rated planes in the game. Fly it properly, and it's a match for most planes in the game.

Balanced fighter that turns well and fast... sounds like La-7.

I concur. All around fantastic combat plane. I like it better than a George...it's faster.

I guess you meant that tongue-in-cheek. I really like that plane though. If it had another 4 or 5 hundred HP it would be my dream combat plane. If we could ever get the Ki-61 II version with the HA-140 engine ( 250 extra HP ) and since it has the same armament arrangement as the K-100 ( and I've found the 12.7mm wing guns awful hard to hit with ) it's possible maybe to have...a wing machine gun ( to save weight ) delete option http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I avoid the La-7 and late Spit because I like things more "interesting".

I wouldn't suggest the La-7...its fast but its not a boom and zoom fighter. Its too structurally weak at speed.

The 109 or the Spitfire are your best options for fulfilling both roles in a good fashion. There are other aircraft that are better in one and better in the other but these two fill in somewhere in between. What you do have to know as a pilot of these two planes is when you need to be a turn fighter and when you need to boom and zoom or generally energy fight your opponent. For instance a Spitfire can out turn a 190 with ease and fight a 109 on fairly even ground but when engaging a Zero or an Oscar should engage as a boom and zoom only.

If you want speed AND turn;

Ki-84
J2M3/M5
N1K2-Ja

All of them 4x20mm, and turn with anything out there. Top notch climbing and high hp to weight. The J2M is also a heck of a B&Z bird, as its the toughest of the Japanese fighters and can dive with anything else out there except the 47.

The 84 can B&Z, but its top speed is much lower, you have to be careful not to get too fast or you will shed a wing.

bf-109 f4. It lacks a bit of firepower and armor but if you´re like me you much prefer a plane that can get you in the adversaries' 6 o'clock rather easily than a plane that has a lot of firepower but lacks maneuverability so you struggle to actually get to use it. besides great maneuverability if you choose the bf you´ll also get a great deal of acceleration. one of the best in the game i think.

On the other hand if a you want a modern machine you also have the fw 190 D9 which is, in IMHO, an almost perfect aircraft in this sim. Its turning rate isn´t anything from another world but the firepower, the junnkers jumo 213 and the roll rate more than more compensate for the tiny flaw.

Just taken the 205 up for a couple of spins - got to say I'm impressed. Very forgiving nature. Think it'll become a regular ride.

Funny you should mention that. I just tried it and have come to like it. Other than the lousy rearward view, I plan to make it a regular mount.

it USED to be the most unforgiving, roll-less POS, flame accelerant biitch that ever was

1C pulled a rare one, when they FIXED that mess...roll, (engine)durability, and Vne
