View Full Version : Your thoughts on a realistic torpedo damage mod.

Let me explain. I don't know what RUB does or IUB to the damage a torpedo inflicts. Historically the electric torpedos had much more explosive then the steam torpedos. (500 Vs. 380 kilograms of torpex)

I can already sink most ships in one shot and I already favour the electric torpedos. So I am wary about making the game easier.

1)I am trying to decide if I should make any such mod. Your thoughts?

2)If I decide to make the mod should I mod the T2 up, the T1 down, or a little of both?

3)Should I make the t2 have historical performance (30 knots, 5000 meters) which is exactly the t3 performance and then mod the t3 damage up so that there is still an advantage to them?

I just wanted to know what you guys thought of this.

to be honest with you..i never use the t-2's due to the speed...but it would be interesting to see what you do cook up ..?

Well I went and ate on it.

I was thinking the current value of 2000 is used for game balance issues. So I did some algebra and figured out that I can keep that average and have the correct ratio in torp strength if I set T1's = 1727 and T2's = 2273.

I am still haven't decided if that is the way to go though.

Regarding the speed advantage of T1's, I personally don't care. It goes faster so what. It goes faster but they see the stream and start making adjustments. In convoys I can't hit my usual 3 or 4 ships at once because I need the torps at 30 knots to do that anyway.

With the electrics, torpedos can be going every which way and no one knows a thing until it is too late.

I often have 3 or 4 ships hit and sunk in 15 seconds from first hit to last. A whole row. (Not a whole coloum, a row is line abreast.)

For me and my personal tactics the electrics are better. Obviously what tactics you use make a big difference in what you choose.

After doing some more research I have found a mistake.

I found out about the difference in warhead strength from a book, however Uboat.net says they all has (almost) the same warhead.

So I grabbed another book "hitlers uboat war" and it isn't clear. It mentions an increase in Torp warhead but between WWI torps and WWII. So the question then is what is the T1 considered.

So I found yet another source uboataces.com that says they were almost all the same.

It might be that the first book was wrong about the torpedo strength increase.

Eberhard Rossler in his excellent The U-Boat;Evolution and TEchnical History of German Submarines give the following figure in appendix IV.

T1 - TIII all with 280Kg explosive charge
TIV - TV all with 274kg

There was a TVI with a 300kg charge, but I don't know if that is modelled in the game. Also TVII to TXIV with wither 280 or 274kg charges.

Imperial Navy torpedo charges much smaller, for example the G/6 series with 160kg charges, the G/7 with 196kg and the h/8 with 210-250kg.

So it seems for the WWII German torps generally (so fara as I hace seen in the game_ there is little or no difference in charge and presumably effect.

There are 2.205 pounds in a kg.

In the game they all have an "impulse" of 2000. There is no difference between any of the kinds of torpedoes.

But I am not going to fret about 6 kilograms, I was under the impression that the difference was much larger when I started this thread.
