What Russian ace was quoted in saying something like "The F-86 and MIG-15 were so evenly matched that the race to build a better fighter should have stopped there". Anyone? I agree with this and the old phrase its the pilot not the plane could not hold more true in this match up. My mouth waters for a spanking new sim based on the Korean War.

Fordfan, we half-won Korea, hence there is a North and South Korea. North being the land of communist depravity and South being the land of freedom, opportunity, and really cool cell phones.

However, a certain general once said that Americans accept nothing but full victory, therefore you see the logic in not allowing a half-won war to count as a victory.

Iraqi soldiers on the other hand, surrendered in regiments, trembling under the might of the United States of America. Therefore, this is a fitting war to make a game about because it guarantees virtually no bias.

Sorry, thanks for posting shots, I'm just so freakin excited by the prospect of this. I loved Mig Alley, but stability and graphics issues eventually killed it for me.
It's not just the planes I'm looking forward to- I think VMF-214_HaVoK is on the money with the idea that Korea is the peak of gunnery-based dogfighting (bullets and closure speeds of 1000+!)- since I had to read "The Fifties" by David Halberstam for school, I've had a soft spot for that era. It seemed almost naive...though being black or gay or in any way "different" would have sucked hard.

Whatever the 50s are like, I'm sure they'll pale in comparison to 2x23mm and 37mm.

Too bad so many US planes got stuck with M2 ballast. Simmers don't get a proper aircraft gun until the M61A1.

Actually in "46" you can have a duel reminiscent of MiG15/F86, i.e. MiG9/YP80. Both have the weapons of their famous Korean War counterparts with the YP80 having an edge concerning gunsight.

Although the battle between MiG9 and YP80 is not as evenly matched as MiG15 and F86, it is quite nice anyway. Give it a try if you have "46" - which was produced by RRG, too. So you might have some kind of preview to their unnamed project.

Now this is REALLY interesting. Busting heads with Sovs over Korea would be IL-2 46 without the ballocks and back to fundamentals. Cannoning Sabres---ye-ha! Perforating MiGs---ye-ha! No silly buggers Teutonic ridiculousness---ye-ha! Hey, I know why that MiG-17 is on the screen. The early production 17s could have been sent to fight in 1952. Thus, it's a legit "what if" airplane. It may be included for 1950's skirmishes after the cease fire. I'm ready for this baby.

1. Only the first two pictures in this thread represent the models from the RRG project.
2. This models are not finished and do not represent the way, they will look in the final version.
3. Those aren't engine renders, those are bad Max renders, stolen by someone.

Are these really SoW renders, or might they be from Luthier's new project, which it has been long suggested would be the Korean War? Or maybe a decision has been taken to use the SoW engine for the Korean project, rather than the IL2 one?

ploughman
05-14-2007, 05:25 AM
Seems they are renders for Luthier's Korean War project, which will use Oleg's SoW engine and not the Il-2 engine. SAQSON has pointed out that the images shown aren't rendered by the SoW engine but by Max, and therefore aren't representative of the quality we can expect from the finished product. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I don't know that that was such a wise decision letting us know they were stolen. It may have been better just to deny knowledge of them.

Then again: Maybe they aren't real Sow:Bob renders, and we're just being told so in order to keep us happy, quiet and stupid!

It doesn't surprise me to see unsanctioned screenshots popping up. That information leak has always been there - or did anyone forget the various patches which have been leaked?

To me it is obvious that some people who have Maddox Games's or RRG's trust are not trustworthy at all. But on the other hand I do see the lure of "leaking" information given the total information blackout on anything SoW-related.

Wake up, Ubisoft! Want us to buy SoW? Then give us some useful information, not just a bunch of meaningless, pre-fabricated press releases! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

I unlike other people in here totally agree with you......... by leaking pictures such as these is doing none of us any favours....all you are doing is giving the opposition in the gaming world an incline into what is being developed by Maddox games for the new engine.

By doing this it is not entirely out of the realms of possibility that another company could cash in on this and release software or an add on for their own product first, hence reducing the possible sales of this new variant and possibly negating it's development.

You dont see ford banging pictures of their work in hand on the web and as said above this is a sorry development that I to feel is dissapointing, especially after the game on the web before release fiasco.............. some people seem to cash in on something the love for a quick kudos from the forums at the possible detriment of future versions......

I do hope you find the scumbag responsible and ensure he never works in the industry again.

so Badsight , what is a FJ-2 ?

well picture a nice F-86 Saber in front of you . . . . in Navy colours

this Navy blue Saber doesnt have any machineguns , but it does have a tailhook!

you see , they couldnt fit the MG's in the plane because the space was already taken up by 20mm cannon ~~

The first production FJ-2 was delivered in Nov 1952 - so its a legit entry even http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Also

Yak-18 (same role, as Po-2)
IL-12 (transport plane)
Li-2
MBR-2 (maritime patrol)

Both La-9 and -11 were used. And no IL-2.
Both MiG-15 and MiG-15bis had several subvariants, moreover, some planes started the war as MiG-15 and ended it as latest MiG-15bis mod for the time by changing their wings, tail section with engine and radioelectonic equipment.

However, it is obvious, that we will not be able to model even all major types. We'll have only the most important ones in the initial release.

Depending on the success of the initial title, we may produce more planes in a pay-ware addons later. But that's too early to talk about it now...

Woof, my brother's father-in-law flew the Canadair Sabre (414 Sqn). He was part of a flight that set a record for a cross country flight between Vancouver and Halifax in 1956.

For any who want to read up on the Canadair Sabre read Larry Milberry's book, ISBN 0-9690703-7-3.

The Sabre was one tough bird. On June 15 1953 F/O J Gilles had to put his a/c down short of the runway after an engine failure during the break for landing. The Canadair was a total write-off but Gille walked away unhurt.

Thanks for the comments, EiZON, HuninMunin and Luftluuver. I remember Mac Gilles and I have that book. It is excellent. As for being the Forum expert on the F86, I'm far from it. That was fifty five years ago and I was a 22 year old nitwit who didn't know enough to come in out of the rain. We flew the North American F86E with a GE engine. (A whopping 5200 lbs thrust.) Not the Canadair with the Orenda. The E model had slats; you can see them extended in the desktop picture. It handled well, with no vices that I remember. It would flick viciously if pulled too tight, however, and the engine would hot start very easily. Engine life was fairly short, too, but I don't recall the exact number of hours. I'll always remember the first solo in the F86. Ten hours dual in the T33 then crank off for the first time in a swept wing, all metal, high level, almost supersonic toy. And imagine, we got paid for it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

The questions I'm thinking is that are they going to design the pilots Gforces resistance for Korean Pilots or Russians resistance experience? That was a major factor at that time. Or making a limit theoric of all the planes .

Thanks very much, Astro. Actually the sig F86 is taken from the membership card of SPAADS, Sabre Pilots Association of the Air Division, made up of pilots who flew the F86 in the RCAF between 1951 and 1963.
Here's a pic of one I did fly, taken at RAF North Luffenham, England, in 1953.

Looks really nice, though as I remember my history books, the biggest complaint the sabre pilots had was the inefectiveness of the 50 cals. I know the kill ratio, and the sabre still came out on top, but. There was one squadron of Sabres that were field /combat testing 4x20 MM cannons. Seems that there was way to many Migs limping home full of holes instead of blowning up. Most it had to do with the fact that Jet fuel is not as flamable as gas, and the Migs had very robust construction.
Can't wait to see the know-it-alls jump in on this subject once the Game gets released.

Nah, one can't unilaterally say 'Hey, the war's finished now, you must all put away your guns and go back to work'. War's over when the Coalition troops have gone home and you can drive through Baghdad or Basra without being hit by an IED.
