Hardly ever flown it. Am aware of some erm, heated debate re the thought that it's performance in game is too good or something. I was wondering if it might represent a reasonable choice for a yak 3 nut who wants to try something optimised for a bit higher altitude, that turns well. What do you reckon?

Very reasonable...

With wing-mounted armament, convergence is a bit more of an issue than the Yak, but otherwise few problems in the air. A bit prone to nosing-over on the ground - taxi slowly and go easy on the brakes.

The Spitfire HF IXC would probobly be your pick. Not a lot of vices, nice armorment and competitive up high.

You've been flying IL2 for a good while now, why not step up your game a little bit? I would say challenge yourself and try the P47D_27 late.

Nothing beats a well flown Jug in the nosebleeds.

If you dont have it already download IL2 compare, its a free utility that gives you various aircraft performance.

Spit is a good plane.
I really have little flying time in it, i will say that i still get more out of a Jug or P-51.
I was flying against 109s and they had no trouble keeping up and turning inside with my Spitfire above 4000m.
Going for a turn fighter might just be reserved for lower level dogfights.

I'm not sure if the HF.IXe is a good choice. The better option is one of the LF.IX models (all of the rest are LF despite the in-game naming system). The HF has a top speed disadvantage all the way up to 8000 meters (thereabouts). Coming from a Yak-3 that would be a huge change.

I see quite a few people mysteriously flying the HF.IX online but none of them I ever see flying over even 3000 meters. So they are crippling themselves.

In reality the LF.IX is meant to give a best top speed in the 6500-7000 meters range (doing meters here because that's the default in game). That is slightly lower than the F.IX (which we don't have) and quite a bit lower than the HF.IX which as we know was optimized for high altitude.

So I'd suggest using any of the IX models except the HF ... unless you intend to engage in combat at 7500 meters or higher.

Comparing Spitfire to Yak I'd say is a pretty good switch because you still have a good turn rate but you will need to get used to a slower roll rate, convergence issues with the cannons mounted on the wings, being a bigger target (those wings are huge), and a more obstructed forward and rearward visibility (the Yak-3 is probably the best in-game or at least equal of the Mustang anyways).

Hope it helps deskpilot. Good luck!
