Not Channel ...but I actually was given a diagram of a real airfield from Mingladon, Burma to copy .... very hard to find anything for the theatre of my Thai/Burma/Indo-china map.

So i guess i've to keep my eyes on this forum?

Please let us know...

Many thanks in advance!

Information on the map can be found at the 352nd Virtual Fighter Group Site. We can't post links here, but it is easy to find. There is a special section in our forum devoted to news of the map.

The map is being painfully and lovingly created by a team of very skilled folks ... attention to detail is paramount and we won't release the map until we are completely satisfied that every base works exactly as intended. No rough runways, broken spawn points, etc. As you can imagine, it's a lot of work to make such a large map right.

This map is projected to be the first of three (and the smallest). The other two will be much larger and encompass most of the ETO, although detail will intentionally be left sp**** because of the size of the maps.

We don't know how this map will play on "weaker" systems .. that remains to be seen. It might well turn out that we are pushing boundaries here and some might not be able to use the map. We won't know until we try it.

There is no projected release date because we don't know when it will be completed, and our present plans are to *not* release a beta ... better to wait and do it right, we think.

Edit, good grief, the "censors" took out a word that contained a string ... egads. "Sp**** " was intended ... means "thinly detailed".

Thanks all, still going to be a little bit before we are completed but making great progress.

Fruitbat great to see you! Will post the Dover remakes soon. Have made the changes to map_c along with a couple others, castle has been moved, but still need to finish adjusting textures, but will have them soon. Been busy with building bases and cliffs. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

2 things that might interest you.

1) These map makers are putting hundreds of hours in through love, probally a lot more hours than that, and yet there is no finacial reward for them. They are doing it because they want to, and as such are going to build the map that they want, and exactly how they want to. This is something that they don't even have to share if they don't want to.

2) And now for the good news. For exactly this reason that you mention, Cannon has recently released a beta version of his channel map, that was deliberatly done to 1/2 scale, with lower object density, both with lower ended comps in mind and online play, where people don't ness want the long flight times amongst other things. It to, is also amazing, so there is something for everyone http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I haven't been a huge fan of the new maps because of the low detail except at the airfields. I even laughed at screenshots of the White Cliffs of Dover, but understand its difficult considering the mapping tools your working with.

That said I really like the cliffs in the Point du Hoc screenshot. Does this mean you have improved the White Cliff of Dover. Earlier screenshots show them as dark hills, while your recent du Hoc screenshot has much more vertical cliffs. If you can modify them further to have a chalky texture I would download your new maps for that quality alone.

Thanks guys we are having as much fun building the map as well.

Kristorf, the buildings are a MOD created by a gentleman named LAL_Rone, a very talented skinner. He also has several other skin packs available that are equally as good.

Chivas you are correct, its pretty difficult getting the cliffs to look the way we want them but we are still working on them. Below is a pic of Dover before our last edit, its has since been changed and will post a pic when we finish retexturing. Still a work in progress. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif One of the limitations we have is to get this angle on the cliffs they have to be a little bit higher than actual size, but something most can live with.

Hi booze,

I saw in your own forum that you were asking for info on the coastlines, as to what was cliffs and what wasn't, other than the dover area.

I can quite happily give you the info for the county of kent, but sussex and round from there not so sure 100%, but would be able to research fairly easily. Biggest cliffs in the UK are at Beachyhead, much bigger chalk cliffs than dover.

If you've got assistance already cool http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

If not PM me here, and i'll do what i can,

For those hoping to use the full size map, yet can't, I would suggest a low density full size version, with fewer Building Objects, and perhaps fewer trees.

Airfields and low altitude targets, like radar stations, may need more buildings or trees, but high altitude targets or the terrain in general need fewer.

There are many 8th AF bases on the map, including Raydon, Hangman.

The images you see are embellished with details (static aircraft and vehicles, for example) that are not on the map but are added to the mission from which the pictures were taken to show how the map will look after you creative mission builders get finished working your magic.

While the team probably won't please everyone, the idea is to make the map sufficiently detailed to present the airfields and countryside with enough detail to make both seem virtually realistic, while not bringing most systems to their knees. So far, in all our tests, no player has complained of poor frame rates, much less "too much detail".

We can't be all things to all people, but we are sure trying to please as many as we can. And what this map offers will be available nowhere else. Nor is it the the last ... there are two more larger maps in the works.

In a few weeks we can expect canonuk's English Channel 1940 map and probably your Cross Channel map a little bit later on. Looks like a competition is going on.

But seriously: what do you mean with "the first map"? Does it have something to do with the 1:1 scale that you split it up in parts. I had some problems with Zipzapp's 1:1 scale Alpen map (that's huge) which takes a while to load the game.
Booze, which part of France/Britain can we expect?

Uufflakke, its all good, no teasing going on here. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif We've taken the position of making this map as accurate as possible and have not ever put out any particular release date because its done when its done and its right. As soon as we can release it we will, we are very much looking forward to this. And no competition with anyone going on at all, I have no clue what anyone else is doing nor have followed any other projects. We have 4 maps total we are building. The first 2 are what you see being developed here and now. First release is the Battle of Britain 1:1 full scale, the second release to follow after that is the same map but with the 43-45 scenario. Then we have 2 MUCH larger maps, both England to Germany. 3rd map is called the Persecutor and is the Northern part of that area, 4th map is called the Deacon and covers that entire area North to South England to Germany also 1:1 very very large. Not sure whats going to happen down the road but we are personally looking forward to the release of BoB SoW, the future of our flight sims looks very promising. Plus we are going to be very busy for years to come. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Excellent work. I've been following and looking forward to your map and CanonUK's until Compans changed textures for fps reasons. I understand why they changed, but I'm not a big fan of photo type scenery especially at low level. Do you plan to have villages similiar to the Slovakia map or are you also having to change to photo type scenery for fps reasons?

I was looking forward to seeing canonuk's map (just like Chivas) untill yesterday afternoon after seeing those aerial photo's. From a high altitude it looks impressive but I prefer to fly at a much lower altitude for some strafing or low level dogfights and in that case everything is as flat as a pancake. Reminds me of Google Earth images seen from a 30 degrees angle. No 3D effects anymore! Not immersive IMO.

Good to know you won't use this kind of aerial photo material!

One comment if I may: The sandbags in the RAF Weald screenie on page 1 seem unnaturally bright. What do you think?

Well we will have the best of both worlds wont we?
Canon's map has always been aimed at playability and on-line use...that is why it was originally 1:2 scale....and now it is almost 2:3 scale and I think with those photo textures will look great....
This will also be great...for different reasons...
I cannot say how the photo textures will be at low level, but I will wait until i am actually flying over it before I make any comments as to its worth....

Even with a Full 1:1 scale map, the fact that we are stuck with one pixel = 50 meters and the buildings we have in game, means that a realistic looking town is almost impossible to achieve..

Booze352nd
10-26-2008, 10:13 PM
Freddie you'll have to forgive me but I'm not really sure what ALMOST a 2:3 scale map is when it was suppose to be a 1:2 SCALE MAP? What is that actually 2:3 OF WHAT?

We will be doing the best we can with what we have to produce a much more realistic town. Please stay tuned, NOTHING is impossible. Depends on how much you want it.

The beta of the Channel map was 1:2 ...but canon said that his Full version had expanded in area and also changed its scale to nearly two-thirds.... he said not an exact scale http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

That's the best advice actually FF.
Just wait and see before we (or I) judge.
But on the other hand this way of mapmaking is not my cup of tea. For four reasons.
1: It leads to exaggerated perspective distortion. Which can already be seen in the first new screenshot of Duxford at AAA. The airfield looks great (my compliments for all those new buildings) from low altitude but the photographic woods in the topright corner are shown from above. So it looks like if the landscape is tilted upwards a bit. If that screenshot wasn't cropped it would have been more striking. It reminds me of this perspective joke:
http://home.hccnet.nl/j.scheltens/Escher%20(1024%20x%201133).jpg
2. I see photographic roads going from nowhere to nowhere. They just get blurred.
3. As mentioned before by another forummember somewhere: Sunlight effect. For instance: when flying in the early evening you have long shadows from the added trees which doesn't correspond (in size, colour and direction) with these phototexture shadows.
4. Some of these textures do have a too modern look IMO.

From a high altitude you won't notice all this, I know, but isn't the devil in the details?

Of course it is their decision, they have their reasons for it, I respect that and I hear people thinking "If you don't like it don't d/l it." And they are right. It is up to each of us to d/l it or not. A lot of people will have hours of fun with it and are deeply impressed by what they see.

And talking about details: in Booze's map I noticed that roads are not zigzagging across the fields like Im used to see but they go along the fields and the same for the treelines. To me an improvement, just like the more convincing colours of the textures, airstrips and roads for instance.

Hi all, just though we'd stop in and post a couple recent shots of progress on the 352nd Cross Channel map. Since the last post we've finished up 11 more Luftwaffe bases and a couple more RAF airfields. RAF Stapelford below. Persecutor is very close to finishing all the roads and bridges for the entire map. We do not have a release date yet but we are marching closer.

Best regards,

Uufflakke,

The roads zigzag because of the way they are created .... one pixel at a time either "straight on" or "at a diagonal".

A pixel shows as a square in the map building tools, and can mate with an adjoining square only at a flat side or a point.

Each "bend" in the road renders as a zig or zag because of that. It's a restriction in the game's engine. It's possible to create straight lines, of course, and lines on a diagonal, but when the two are combined with only one or two pixel lengths between them a pilot sees the zig zag effect. There is really no way to fix that. You see that same effect in all the maps in the game.

The smooth roads you see around some of the airfields in Booze's images are not really roads. They are, instead, pictures of roads for effect; a mission builder won't be able to have vehicles move on them as they do on "real" roads created by the map maker.

We've learned that there is a lot of compromise involved in these projects, and we're doing the best we can to "make it as real as it can be".

Great Map. Congratualtions to your team!

I must say though, with all of this stuff coming out, all us campaign builders will be spending months to make campaigns worthy of your map. Except for Phil_k http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif, who can make amazing 30 mission campaigns in like a week. We'll probably be playing through His stuff first...

As CO of the 352ndFG, I appreciate all those nice comments you have been making about the map. The entire squad is involved from map making to textures, to roads and bridges to mission making , research and testing.
We have now corrected all the roads and bridges and will be putting together our master actors static file which places all the bases on the map. While we have them on a working version from which we test things, our master will be the final version
In addition, we will be releasing the map with both a campaign and a duplicate coop series of missions based on the after action reports for BOB. Juat a little addition and probably not as professional as some of you mission makers who are waiting to do your own versions but it will be something for you boys to use while you await others versions.
As to a release date, I really can't say but it will be soon probably shortly after Christmas or New Years when we finish the final testing of the map and the missions.
There will also be included in the release a large text file with historical info for BOB and to put it all together a complete "one click" install package for everything so that you won't have to manually place any files and be subject to mistakes.
This we have tested many times and it works flawlessly.
So there you have it. A Christmas gift to the entire IL2 community from the 352ndFG.
Just try and be patient and we'll release it ASAP.

I have a 8800gtx card and unless there is a crap load of flak going off....I have minimal FPS hits...and a small FPS hit over London. What objects and density mission builders put on the map will determine the end users performance in regards to frame rates. But at present it is easy on the frames.

I believe that the 352nd has nearly completed the map and are in the process of compiling and testing. I don't think we will be waiting much longer. Then they will go full throttle on completing the late war map for long distance bombing mission. Its all good.

I agree with you on BOB WOV although they are making slow but steady progress on improving the terrain. The Sun needs a major upgrade as it has no effect in the game and was of major importance in any combat flight sim. It also needs major improvements on ocean and shoreline graphics as well as landmarks, roads, railways, elevation changes. I've reload BOB WOV and will take it for another spin when 2.09 comes out.

I'm also looking forward to CanonUK's Battle of Britain map. I really liked Compans trees on that map, but haven't tried his photorealistic 2D enhancement because I think its a step backwards. Canon looks to be adding alot of 3D objects to his map as we speak so I'm not sure how much of its 2D and how much is 3D

The 352nd map appears to be mostly 3D which I much prefer. We should be in for some very interesting BOB missions and campaigns in the near future. I'm looking forward to some ground pounding and train busting missions on both sides of the Channel.

Chivas,
I've seen CanonUK's 3D buildings and they are really good. Those typical English houses,St. Paul's Cathedral, The Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge.
So I was wondering how will the cities look like on the 352nd map? The airfields are great but I would love to see some city screenshots if possible.

if you look at Beauvais Aerodrome screens you notice that it is far from flat.... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I wonder how they pulled that off and surely is bound for some really interesting landings... top notch

I have been secretly waiting for this map since I first saw screen shots from it.

I think one of the coolest things for me about this particular 352nd map are that it's 1:1 scale, which allows simulation of some very specific well documentated engagments in this area during the war.

The other interesting thing (besides the unparalled detail), is that this project was completed by a Squad, working as a team. How cool is that?

Thanks 352nd for what I'm sure will be my favorite map and for setting an example of what teamwork can accomplish.

I've noticed a few haystacks around the perimeter of these airfields. I are those mademoiselles going to be modelled within? I also wouldn't mind brushing up on my horizontal dogfighting.

we are currently testing each of the air bases to make sure spawn points and there are no seams between plates (they cause giant pot hole like happenings in things like runways....which makes it hard to take off or land on lol). We added the Chain Home radar masts in proper locations and are testing the textures etc. It takes a while.

Believe me we want to get this map out into the hands of all of you as soon as we are able but we wont release it till it meets our own standards.

I've read that an airfield named RAF Northolt, that played an mayor role in the Battle Of Britain in defending London (if I'm wrong, don't blame me. I've just read it). So why don't you guys build that airfield, so we have even a more realistic map.

And how about now? I'd like to play a static campaign on this map, and the sooner it is released, the sooner somebody can design a campaign on it, right? Why not release what you have, and update it later as needed? It's nice you are putting signs and bustops on the ground, or whatever, but I can't see most of that stuff from 10000 feet.

I'm pretty confident that when this map is released, it will come with a few campaigns and missions. I cant see a project of this magnitude not being released without some kind of way for those who dont know how to use the FMB to be able to use the map.

You've obviously never been involved in map making. The making of cities and airfields is the most time consuming work you could ever imagine. I'm pretty sure that the images posted here are over populated or from test missions from the above mentioned campaigns most likely in the works. And if you know any of these guys who are working on this map, or any map maker that is worth their salt, putting out an unfinished product is not something they are interested in doing.

I'm certain that if we are all just patient for this that we wont be let down.

thefruitbat
03-06-2010, 12:23 PM
if he also knew anything about mapmaking, he'd know that any change to the static.ini, of which there would be, by just the adding of one object, will result in all campaigns with any destroyed objects via the fmb destroy brush, not to work, making it pretty pointless to release before its ready.

The 352nd Virtual Fighter Group has been quiet on these boards, but not quiet on Cross Channel Map development. The 1940 Battle of Britain version of the CCM is nearly completed. All the airfields are finalized (that means frozen in development). Final map textures are being adjusted and edited. Cities are being populated, shorelines double, triple, and quadruple checked, and generally we are at the final editing stages.

We've been working on this map for over two years; map-making techniques and knowledge have advanced more rapidly than our efforts, we no sooner get an airfield finished than we see a "mod" that makes a lot of what we did either unnecessary or too "object intensive". The map is so large and has so many objects on it (there are almost 100 airfields) that we are concerned that, for less powerful systems, it might be "too much". Consequently we have sparsely populated cities and villages (the latter are almost solely ground textures) presuming that mission and campaign makers will populate those cities and other areas needed for their missions.

The map is very close to release. Read more and follow the latest details at the 352nd Virtual Fighter Group forums (link in my signature).

There has been an update to the CCM map. The update was just released today. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Originally posted by 352nd Persecutor @ SimHQ: http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthre...Map.html#Post3163191 (http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3163191/Re_MOD_The_Other_Channel_Map.html#Post3163191)

Good morning, and Happy Holidays to all.

A new "revision" or "update" to the CCM is now available; the current version is 1.4.1. A myriad of small issues have been addressed and corrected, some texture issues resolved, some airfields flattened and smoothed, and the like. No major changes; any mission or campaign built on the original version should work as designed. No new objects have been added to the map. Many of the issues caused by the simultaneous release of the map by both the 352nd VFG and the Ultra-Pak folks, who were a great help, have been resolved.

The new version may be downloaded from the 352nd Virtual Fighter Group site; link in my signature.

An "add-on" version will be released shortly which will include Bodney, for those who might want it.
You can find it at the 352nd's website in their downloads section.
