I play with nearly 100% realism docked only cause I can't live without the beautiful visuals anyway the destroyers in this game aren't to smart. You want to sink them nearly every time here is what you do. Get a game of chicken going, make sure they are dead 0 degrees off your bow. Dive to Periscope depth take the damage they will dish out as you get within 1000m then launch ONE torp dive to 20-25m but do not change coarse. Your top will hit em in the bow nearly every single time. I€ve been using this strategy since the beginning and I rarely miss. Only when your sub is not on a 0deg run will you probably have to take on the depth charges because you make the destroyer chase you and he runs off the torps attack path. If they don't sink they are usually badly damaged and run away.

After last nights mission of taking on a taskforce I was able to sink 7 destoryers and used my *** shots to take out the small escort carrier.

Hmmm, I've taken out precisely 1 destroyer by running directly away from it and firing an electric torp set to magnetic at close range. I kept my periscope up so he could track me easily and stay on course, and the electric torp leaves no wake for him to see and avoid. I find running away underwater while giving away your position is safest, since I've also charged at them straight on, hit with a torpedo and still have the guy come right down on me. I've also had them veer off to one side to avoid a wake they've seen, and if there's more than one destroyer (you get more and more as time goes on) then you're screwed.

Personally I dont go for destroyers unless he;s the only one guarding a convoy. They are too small to hit easily, can ruin your day severely and are tiny in terms of tonnage and damage to enemy shipping.

Do what I said and you won't miss once he is hit then you have to change course or he will come right down on you.

After 16 patrols (split between two careers, one in 1941 and one in 1943) I've yet to have one pose any real threat to me. Of course I avoid them like the plague, so maybe that's why.

I think they're a bit too easy to sink too, and there are a couple of exploits that make them even easier. I think Destroyer hulls and guns need to be strengthened somehow. You can shoot off a destroyer's guns really easily, which makes them harmless.

It always been easy to take out destroyers in wwii subsims.

An easier way to take out destroyers is shoot them from 6k with the manual deckgun before they even have a chance to fire back.

But knowing this is the way all subsims are, I play like Beeryus and avoid the escorts. I haven't sunk a dd since 1987. At least not one protecting a convoy. On a fast moving Task Force I will take what I can get.

I have also taken on destroyers with pretty good results. I don't usually go seeking them out (unless I happen across them and they are alone), but if I am discovered by one I rarely hide.

As above, I head directly towards the destroyer with a zero degree AOB. I usually toss one electric at it using a magnetic timer, set at a depth of 4 meters. I let the target close to at least within 500 meters before I launch. Be ready to launch a spread of two w/a 4 degree spread if the ship suddenly veers port or starboard. As soon as I fire, I dive to 20 meters, go to ahead full, and execute and emergency turn to port or starboard. This will usually run me out of the path of depth charges and also can set up a nice stern shot with a pretty good AOB if the destroyer needs finishing off.

I have also surfaced and duked it out with a wounded destroyer that was trying to run away. You have to have a highly skilled gunnery team (mine is always lead by my officer w/the gunnery qual) so the reload time is very quick. A few well placed HE rounds usually finishes her off quickly. Using the HE to the deck/upper hull also has the good chance of knocking out the destroyers gunners. Try to approach this "assault" from a rear position. She can only bring one gun to bear that way and cannot outmanuever you as easily.

I like to leave a convoy w/out destroyer support when I can. Not always possible but often the opportunity presents itself. On my 16th patrol I took out the destroyer leading a convoy first, then submerged, slipped under the convoy, and engaged the destroyer that was bringing up the rear guard, sinking both. I was then free to ravage the convoy at will. I sunk 2 tankers, a troop ship, 2 C3's, and 1 small cargo. Add the destroyers and that was my best attack ever.

The worst part and I believe this needs fixing however, is to just ram them with your conning tower at periscope depth. You will take minimal damage while destroyers will be heavily damaged and often sink....zzzzz

I tried that one yesterday.
I needed two times ramming before it went down.
The second time he went after me so i had a briliant idea.
I went in full reverse and rammed it.
But the problem was that it went down all over me.
I got a lot of damage reports and in the end my hull was just 20%.
And almost every part of my sub was damaged.
So i need another smart plan http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Thus far I've noticed the same thing - fire right down the throat of an incoming destroyer with an electric torp and you'll most likely nail him. However I'm still early in the war (1940) so perhaps later when the Allied ASW equipment improves it'll be harder to nail DD's espeically if you have several of them converging on you.

They'll easily avoid the steam torps but the electric ones are practically invisible.
