Hi Davinci,

This is at least the third thread you've started on the same movie... makes it hard to keep track.

I am downloading the movie quite quickly, and will make a mirror for it. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif

This is definitely one of the Very BEST movies yet created!!! Extremely smooth in panning; great selection of view 'modes', fly-by, externals, etc... Excellent "scenes"...

With all the VERY low altitude action, right down on the deck, it would have been even better with the new FB Patch's dust/dirt being kicked up(That's a Neat new effect in the patch!).

I would like to showcase it on My site. I am sending you a Private Message thru this forum (Upper Right of the forum page if you've not used before) to discuss the details of my hosting. Please visit my site(link in SigBlock Below) and follow the links to the movies already viewable to see how I present them embedded for streaming, and in a consistent size.

Thanks.

Again, Great job on this video..it's a definite potential award winner if there's ever another competition.

thank you kindly http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

- But I must know - what did you use to capture the
- video, and how did you do the editing?

i used fraps, 1.9d to be exact.
originally, i had problems recording, everything i recorded at 640x480 and 24+fps came out almost double speed and choppy when played back.
found out it was because my 5400rpm hard drive just couldnt write that raw caputre data fast enough.

solution was to record at 15fps(5400 was good enough for 15fps), and run the game at half speed when recording. then play it back at double speed. A wierd side effect to this, was incredibly smooth video http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

all editing was done with VirtualDub. although the "fade" between the first few scenes was done with adobe premiere. Everything else was simple virtual dub work.

Wow! That's a pretty ingenious solution, Davinci!/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif I have a 7200 rpm drive, but still experience some stuttering. I'll definitely try that.

Virtual Dub is a great tool.

Great visuals! Breathtaking shots and use of lighting and space. This video is a a breakthrough.

One thing, I just can't feel the movie with Michael Jackson on it, his song is not bad, it's just that for me it doesn't fit with the action you are showing /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif , still a great movie. Contact me if you wish some pointers into soundtracks, I will help you with that.

I'd like to offer my impression of the film, beyond just that it's well worth the download. With the intro and its views I got a feeling of the natural peace and beauty of the earth, and started to wonder if the purpose of the film is to show off the FB scenery. So beautifully timed with the introduction of vocals, the scene is rudely interrupted by machines screaming violence low across that landscape. It reminds me a bit of the Star Wars cinematography, which is a compliment. As has been mentioned, the cuts, angles and timing of scenes is so well put together that it is practically a breakthrough; this kind of editing takes imagination. The tragic but exciting scenes that follow flow to tell the story of men killing one another in their machines. The fighting is really well done, and it is seldom that we as pilots can sit back in perspective and take in the visuals of these fights—usually we are so intent on our task that we see nothing beyond our objective.

I have to say that the scenes and music play very well together. However, I have to agree that that this style of music is after all not very fitting to the scenes. It is almost perfect for the beginning, but it might be better to fade it out and pick up a new musical theme as the fight goes on. I just can't associate the visuals and era with what someone described as "easy listening."

On a technical note, I have played with Fraps before, but on a slower computer and an older version than 1.9. Then I played back at 1/4 speed, but still got stutter despite a 7200rpm drive. I probably was setting the frame capture rate too high. Now I have a faster computer, so I hope if I do my own film effort I'll be able to get it as smooth as you do. Is you machine fast? The smoothness of the playback really was amazing. I will also look into VirtualDub, is it freeware?

Very well done, thanks for sharing your work!

Cheers,
Mike

Well....wow, great job. can i make a few suggestions. first of all, let me start by saying, this is the best fb movie i have seen yet. i cant dig on the MJ though. it would be cool if you would sometimes cut in the sound fx here and there. ya know, like bring the sound of cannon fire and engine sound in the more intense parts. maybe splice in some acual radio chatter maybe something with a frantic pilot on the radio as he gets shot down. then fade back out to just music. i think it might add to the sence of an intense dogfight in progress. well anyhow, GREAT job man. i really enjoyed that.

i oringinally planned to use classical pieces, but i just couldnt get one that fit so perfectly with the start of the video. You would probably have to be a jackson fan, but the musics somber tone, kinda felt right(to me) with the foggy/dingy look of the ground battles.
The more i listend to it, the more it seemed to work.
opening lines like "i was wondering in the rain", and "swift and sudden fall from grace" just after the tranquility was shatterd.

- On a technical note, I have played with Fraps

this is a funny thing, i had tried to make fb videos before, but i just couldnt get by this "limitiation" of choppy off speed vids.
my comp is a 1.2ghz athlon, with 256mgs ram, radeon 9000, and a 5400rpm 40gig drive. I figured that was the reason i couldnt get nice video out and never would.

fraps website mentioned needing a 7200rpm, hard drive to record at 640x480, but i figured you can get around this by setting the fraps capture rate to 15fps, and running the game at 1/2 speed when you record. Just change the frame rate in virtualdub to 30, and you get incredibly smooth 30fps video at normal speed http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif even on a crappy system such as mine.

- will also look into VirtualDub, is it freeware?
yeah totally free, really easy to use. It cant do any fancy things but for simple editing, its perfect.

lol funny you should mention that, that is exactly what i wanted to do. i posted on it on simhq, that i was going to use the actual voices from the game all through out the video, but i couldnt get adobe preimere to do it right, it kept canceling out the background sound. or just caused playback errors all together, so i had to cancel all the sound effects.

I have trouble playing it. The movie (not the music) freezes after exactly 10 seconds. Any solution?. Downloads without any trouble within a few minutes (broadband).

The first 10 seconds looks great - need the rest.

Needless to say, a fairly fast broadband connection is required for these large files.

The very Large Mb files/movies will sometimes for some people "Hang-up", pause, which I conclude is due to buffering. For embedded movies, I cannot show the controls across the bottom because it messes up the HeightxWidth proportions of the movies...Imagine the scrolling buffer(% completion) across the bottom that you see when you see streaming movies in Windows Media Player.

When a movie on my site does that, hangs up, usually you can just wait about 30 seconds or so, then right click on movie to access controls. You can then select "Play" to resume movie OR for most movies you can hit Stop, then Play, and the movie should start at the beginning and play uninterrupted through completion. Again, this seems to happen almost exclusively with only with the Very large files/movies...or to people with slow internet connection.

Or, of course, you can just use the "Download" option offered on the page. (currently the ZIPped version is not available, but you can Stream or Download the *.AVI file, when you get to it, by left clciking or right clicking, as appropriate.)

Here is a direct Download link, for any who read this thread and want to see the movie:

http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~chapman/flightsims/oberstguncam/Movies/Stranger1.avi

AS you probably know, Left click on the URL link and the your Windows Media Player will open and stream the movie down to view. Right click on the URL, then select "Save Target As..." and you can simply download the AVI file to your harddrive, without opening Media Player, for later viewing.

Hope this helps a little.

There seems to be a consensus about the Jackson music. I don't hate it at all, even though I find it doesn't fit very well. My biggest problem was after watching the movie several times I found that song stuck in my head for a few days. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-indifferent.gif

Davinci,

Don't listen to the philistines. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif I'm no paticular fan of Michael Jackson, but in this case the music fitted the action and the cinematography like a glove!

I thought Michael Jackson's song work very well with the video clip. If you listen to the words.....it works. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Questions to Davinci:

I know you use Fraps 1.9D, and Virtual Dub. I saw at the beginning of the clip....Divx can be seen at the bottom right. Did you use Dr. Divx to finalize the video?

Also what mission/Map did you use in the video. Love the mountains and rolling hills in the start of the video. Is it possible to download it.

Keep up the good work....look forward to the next one.

Hi Falcon,

Although Davinci could tell you where and on what specific map the scenes are from, you defnitely already have all of it, since there is no 3rd party downloadable maps or aircraft for IL-2 or FB.

"- I thought Michael Jackson's song work very well with

thanks that is why i used it, the opening music worked well with the scenic shots, and the somber tone, fit well with the dingy/foggy look

- I know you use Fraps 1.9D, and Virtual Dub. I saw at
- the beginning of the clip....Divx can be seen at the

nope, it was all done in virtualdub, i used adobe to fade between the first scenes, everyting else was done with virtualdub.

- Also what mission/Map did you use in the video. Love
- the mountains and rolling hills in the start of the
- video. Is it possible to download it.

the opening sceneic shots were fillmed in a qmb on chimera from the russian side, at 7am and 8am
all battle scenes
i did 4, p47s vs fwa4s qmb's on smolensk at 8am, and took the best footage from the 4.
then 4, p47 vs bf110s on smolensk at 8:30am, and took the best shots from the 4 tracks.
only built missions were the opening combat scene, i needed to get fws to chase me by a static camera, and the landing scene, where i wanted my p47 to land "over" the camera like you see in space shuttle landings(i stole the idea from NASA) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

all very simple to do, i had actually never used the fmb before. I just planned it well http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

it wasnt so much tracks i made into a video, as it was a video i made from tracks, if you get what i mean.

One other thing....Where do you turn off all the comms stuff that comes on the screen?? I still get the power ratio signature on the bottom right of the screen? Most others I found out how to turn off.

Hi Davinci (you must change your name to Master Leonardo)

Great work, i must say that people like you and NTESLA, UCLANUPE, I16Fan and other keep me away of uploading my first movie (someday i'll probably do it), that seem a bit "simple" alongside your masterpieces.

Concerning your music choice, i agree that something more epic "could" have worked better but after all you can't say that the "Lord of the Rings" movies are crap just because some big-small-subtle changes that the director Peter Jackson made to the orignial story.

I think that this community is one of the coolest in the gaming world, but also one of the most perfectionist, i can't believe that after so much time waiting for the patch..there's still people whinning about something !

Ps: I also made my recordings with fraps at 640x480 but never achieved the landscape resolution you're showing...where is the trick Master Leonardo ???

Good flight to you !

-
- Good flight to you !

because you are only running the game in 640x480 for recording purposes, you can ramp up the ansio filtering, to 8x or 16x because your vid card is doing so much less work at 640x480 and has power to spare.

also the encoding, as a matter of fact, the verison of the video you watched is the lesser quality version.
i had originaly encoded with xvid which produces MUCH better background images then regular divx.

the difference between "xvid" and "divx" is like the difference between "8x ansio filtering" and "no ansio filtering". With xvid you get a significan increase in background image quality for a insignificant increase in file size(less then 1% on my 48meg video).

bitrate is important aswell, since i wanted to retain as much quality in my video to show off FB's landscapes, i chose a bitrate of 1200, which gave me the best quality/size ratio for that purpose.

hope that helps.

Hi Master Leonardo

You're saying that this was the low resolution version of the movie, so why didn't you share the better one (xvid) ?

I use Fraps for recording short secuences during playback of the track then encode them with virtual Dub and finish the assembly and further editing with music in Adobe Premiere...

How can you encode your movie with Xvid codec (i've downloaded several codec but virtual Dub says that these are not original versions of them so the results may not be as good and my computer will destroy, burning the whole block and i'll have to pay in hell the acts of piracy involved in downloading such codecs... so to avoid those unpleasant messages...where did you get that xvid codec ?).

You also said that you recorded your tracks using half speed, so to make a 5 minutes final movie you must have recorded at least 10 minutes of avi files (not counting the scenes you don't use), how much Hd space did you use to make your movie (i'll bet around 1 Gb...lol), did you assembled the movie on top of the music or did you added the controversial music score after making all the video editing ?

Well if you reached then end of this thread i must thanks you, your work was so inspiring that i've watched it over and over (even this morning while taking my breakfast) and i just kept asking myself...wow how did he made that, wow what a great camera view and wow and wow...

Good flight to you !

- You're saying that this was the low resolution
- version of the movie, so why didn't you share the
- better one (xvid) ?

that was my original plan, but when i first posted the vid it was brought to my attention that some people apperently have problems with xvid http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif so i re-encoded with divx to save people any trouble.

its the same resolution, just noticably less quality loss in its compressed form.

- I use Fraps for recording short secuences during
- playback of the track then encode them with virtual
- Dub and finish the assembly and further editing with

i do it all in virtualdub.

How can you encode your movie with Xvid codec (i've

heh, pay no attention to that, and it has nothing to do with piracy, simply download the codec http://www.filemirrors.com/search.src?file=XviD_Install.exe and install it, then it will apear as one of your video compress options in virtualdub(or adobe).

- You also said that you recorded your tracks using
- half speed, so to make a 5 minutes final movie you
- must have recorded at least 10 minutes of avi files
- (not counting the scenes you don't use), how much Hd
- space did you use to make your movie (i'll bet

way more then 1 gig http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif, i tried to handle the entire video uncompressed, and it flattend my 40gig hard drive! when you save an uncompressed fraps captured video in virtualdub it gets even bigger http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif I wanted to keep it uncompressed, and just compress it once when it was finished to keep quality high, but it just isnt feasable. a way around that is to compress them in xvid at the highest possible quality.
in virtual dub or adobe select xvid to compress and go into its controls and set it to "quality" and max it.
this turns a 500meg uncompressed video scene into a 75meg video scene with the same quality(no quality loss in compression).

- did you assembled the movie on
- top of the music or did you added the controversial
- music score after making all the video editing ?

did the video editing first, but with the song in mind(after i decided on it) so it fit with the opening scenic shots.

- i just kept asking
- myself...wow how did he made that, wow what a great
- camera view and wow and wow...

well thank you, and as for camera view, i recorded some scenes upwards of 10 times, from different angles until i got exactly what i wanted(after i watched the track from different views and found what i wanted). If i saw something i liked i wouldnt settle until i got it to look just right. Never said "well that is good enough" if i knew i could get it better.

Hi again Master Leonardo

I followed the link you gave me and found a lot of files with the same name (but different size...???) which one must i download ?

BTW thanks for your detailed answer...i thought i was going nuts when i made my first recording ending with 700 Mb of short video secuences...but it puzzles me when i encoded them in DivX AVI the size always whent down at least ten times.

rgr i started work on another, but it isnt a "sequel", its just another little video.

i REALLY want the addon patch to come, once it does i will put together a nice long 10+ min mini-movie. But i need the planes before i really go at it.

Davinci,

I thought I was the only IL2 movie maker waiting for the add-on. I am also waiting for it to finalize my next movie, we will be seeing alot of them come out soon after the add-on. It would be ideal if we knew what aeroplanes and/or features would be included with this add-on since Oleg mentioned of one being free and the other not.

Thanks for some insight on how you do this. i tried it but i found a problem with the sound [my next movie will have some in-cockpit sounds... i like the effect] when i record at 15fps while playing back at half speed the sound doesn't Doppler [it doesn't lower pitch ala Hollywood slow motion, but when i play back and double the playback speed it does Doppler and doubles it's pitch
So I guess it's back to my original method. I will record it to a digital camcorder and re import it as an avi. I'm going to do one on the German evacuation of Sevastopol in 1944, wish me luck

i had never tried it with sounds, fraps 2.0 requires xp, im on 98se so i dont get to record sounds to begin with..
only other thing i can think of to get around your problem, would be to record the video first(using half speed trick), then go back and record just the sound(normal speed), and sync them up in your editor. Smooth fps+sound http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
donno if this would be to hard, but it might be an option.
