i dunno if its me or the stick, but when i close on a target i find it hard to keep my cross hairs on enemy, very twitchy and stuff... any settings or iam i just a jitter bug????? lol

not a jitter bug, just a n00b (no offense) I'm afraid it's going to be a matter of practice.

Try the advice in the manual about practicing on friendly bombers, it really helps.

Also there is an PDF file floating around somewhere that contains RAF manual outtakes on gunnery, that's pretty handy too if someone will kindly post the link.

Try 4 TB3 bombers with no loadout (so they dont have ammo). Big slow targets, tons of engines if thats what you want to aim at. Also, I hope someone posts the link to the RAF manual, I think simhq took it down.

Also, maybe change the stick input in setup. You can make the stick much less sensitive near the middle position, making it less herky-jerky--especially since it is common to over-grip and over-control the stick when it comes time to pull the trigger.

Gonna have to change your dead zone settings. It's not the joystick (well it could be), but you're hand is too shaky when you line up a target. Just adjust the dead zone settings and you should find it easier and less sensitive.

I'm no expert, but I have found out that trimming is extremely important here. If you are flying right behind the target, trim your plane so that the enemy will stay in your crosshair even if you release the stick.

Trim your plane once in the air. Adjust dead zone of your stick. And still! Is pretty hard to keep more than 2-3 seconds the enemy in your sight. Good fighter pilots are the ones who takee advantage of those 2-3 seconds.I am no fighter pilot , but when I was playing this game in the begining all I wanted to do was to shoot down planes. I realized that I suck badly in this area ,especially in furballs, so I switched the tactics. I have maximum 1 kill/night and a lot , I mean A LOT! moved mud (this includes the unfortunate planes caught on the ground). Myself I don't dogfight. Learned that from Hartmann stories. I didn't get many kills ,but I realized that I land pretty much often than before. And I a very good shape.

Hi JG26_RED,

I had the same trouble too. The problem isn't poor dexterity, rather the trim/speed/approach of your plane. Here is what I do when closing in on a target's six:

1) approach att maximum speed if range is between 1 and 2 km, no flaps and max throttle
2) If you are closing in fast, drop flaps at 1 km distance, making sure you are still gaining on the target. Reduce the methanol boost as well.
3) As speed drops, TRIM! Ideally, this should be done between 800m to 500 m from the target.
4) Now you should be about 500m to 300m from target, with the trimming done, and slowly approaching. This means that you should be able to release the stick and still be in a perfect level flight. Don't adjust speed at this stage.
5) If excecuted properly, you should have a window of opportunity between 300m to 150m behind your target. Now it is time to fire! Dond fiddle with speed or flaps, as this will make your aircraft instable, which means your crosshair will "bounce" up and down, making it very, very difficult to hit the target.
6) it is better to brake off the attack if you didn't reach the conditions under bullit 5. Last second panic adjustments forces you to a sloppy pot shot with little effect.

Hi

Adding my 2 cents, in the input section,drop your pitch, roll and yaw to 0,1 then 3 for pitch and roll, you can use more for yaw.

This will make the stick less reative to pressure change as you squeeze the trigger.

Definitly get trimmed neutral as soon as your off the ground.

If you're stalking then Hannah's right (just look out for poeple stalking you!!) but otherwise try to get some degree of deflection otherwise an awful lot of rounds will whizz straight past the target. Getting right behind is soooo tempting but a bit of offset (aim slightly ahead) means more rounds hit (larger area presented to you)

Guns convergence - 300m at most for air to air with fighter - some poeple use more if hitting bombers, I use around 225-250m. 175m is devastating if you get in that close!!

I think the only adivce i can give you is to get closer!I never really shoot until im 100m away from the target, i dont use trim personally because i think it takes way to long to figure out as i use a keyboard and have no HOTAS also at this close range it does not really matter if if are not dead on the target becuase you are bound to hit him anyway.

In a note on things to aim for try if you can to get below him and speed up then pull sharply and you unleash some cannon into his engine where it is weakly armoured.

With bombers try coming in from different angles but never from the back as the only real blindspot is dead on the tail and there is no point in shooting at that.

Practise is important i have played IL2 and FB for about a year now and am still crap compared to online peeps.

you can adjust the sensativities by clicking on input and adjust all the axis speeds, you might want to set them in 6 graduations.

Lead, is that your method for the 190?

How do you guys trim german planes? I thought all we get is the elevator to trim.

In response to the bullet list: If you are in German a/c or a Thunderbolt come in as fast possible. Don't drop flaps. If you have an extreme alt advantage you will need to pull back on the throttle/rpm. Keep speed managed just under "the shakes". After your run climb like the dickens! That list only works for the VVS a/c that can outturn, out accelerate, out anything except dive the german aircraft. To lose your E like the list suggested is suicide.
