View Full Version : Mustang 3, the best?

You may thought for a second that I'm kidding there but I'm not. That plane simply rocks on Western virtual front. Now *if* that plane had only two hispano cannons instead of 4 x 0.50cals, that would promote it to favourite late war western plane. For sure. But...

Now onto some numbers...
I've tested four late war western types; Tempest, P-47D_LATE, Mustang Mk.III, FW-190D9 '44.
Basic tests in rate of climb and range. Depending on range I've selected 75% fuel for Tempest and FW-190D and 50% for Mustang Mk.III and P-47D.

Mustang and FW-190D ruled the tests being better than Tempest and P-47D in RoC, eg. fastest RoC.
Now FW-190D has the slight edge over Mustang above 3000m and up to 5000m (highest tested alt), while Mustang showed better result from deck up to 3000m.

Now if we take into account somewhat better Mustang turn rate versus FW-190D it is no wonder that I consider it very very deadly plane to Luftwaffe fighters. Especially 1 vs. 1 Mustang vs. FW-190D.
Not to mention Mustang better top speed, deck and up high.
Vs. all Luftwaffe pistons.
Of course we all know that nothing can beat Bf-109G10 and Bf-109K4 in RoC from deck up to at least 5000m...

There's also something fishy in fighters range (Mustang vs. P-47D). Jug is supposed to have range of 3,060km (data according to Hardball's) and Mustang 3 should have 2,090km range. I tested both types on 370km IAS on 2,000m alt (true air speed around 420-425kp/h).
Weird thing is that Mustang lasted in air 4h27m while P-47D lasted 4h17m. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

What I'm really interested into are some comparations in acceleration, of few late war types but I'm not good with device link and stuff.

Kuna, the P-47 has a turbocharger that helps it increase the range when at higher altitude. Try testing at 7500 M altitude since the turbocharger cannot be used much down low.

Thanks mate, I'm aware that P-47D and TA-152 are the best on that altitudes, P-47 may be *the* very best. It's a close match I didn't really had such fights so I can't say much about it.

I'd try the Tempest with less fuel. It has longer legs than the FW190D-9. Infact there are 4 fuel tanks so you can last a good long while on 50%.

Agreed Kuna, MustangIII is my fav late US army fighter. Who cares if back view is porked, u don't need one as nothing can catch you up. Very very dangerous opponents for antons, a bit less for Doras.

Still, with a bit of sarcasm I think it's pity for being unarmed.

But a great recce plane! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Well Kuna you probably know what I think about it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif I find 4x.50 quite enough if there is no kill stealing cannon equipped ufo n00b Spits around, although 6 50's would be devastating. I am also insanely happy it's not armed with any kind of cannons http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Mustang III is a great ride. I like my odds against any opponent 1v1 at any altitude. It's not the best at all altitudes or speeds, but can certainly hold its own accross the board.

I've just checked Tempest on 50%, it seems that even on such fuel loadout it is not great... albeit good in comparison with the rest of three tested machines (FW-190D, Mustang 3 and P-47D_LATE).
It holds good up to 2000m after that all three aircraft climbed noticeably better that Tempest.

So rankings are (Tempest, Mustang3 and P-47D_LATE on 50% fuel, FW-190D on 75% fuel):
0-1k FW-190D, Mustang3, Tempest, P-47D_LATE (first three virtually the same result in second)
1-2k Mustang3, FW-190D, Tempest, P-47D_LATE
2-3k Mustang3, FW-190D, P-47D_LATE, Tempest
3-4k Mustang3, FW-190D, P-47D_LATE, Tempest
4-5k FW-190D, Mustang3, P-47D_LATE, Tempest

*FW-190D is '44 model
*measured rankings are based on continuous climb from 0 to 5000m, not separately measured between those altitudes; eg. FW-190D was first to reach 5000m from deck altitude although Mustang was leading the 'race' for the most part.

Great plane, but the 180 degree snap-spin still catches me out sometimes.

There is something wrong with that data Im affraid. While Mustang could fly about that far with internal fuel, NO WAY P-47 could fly that far with without external tanks and big ones too. There are ranges and ranges: at economical cruise P-51B/C could reach 2.011km with INTERNAL fuel while what late P-47D could do with that was 1.657km.

Last night my m8 and i took the Mustang MK III to ceiling. We reached 39800 ft. whatever that is in meters, we didn't look, then i had to leave. We could have probably taken her up a bit more. Took a while and she was slow up high. Anyway so i decided to find out when the wings came off in a dive. 590 MPH whatever that is in KPH didn't look. anyway a 550mph dive speed is shaky but she would hold together quite safely, just no sudden jerks on the stick to pull out hehehe. She is my new favorite and i like my odds with her, just a bit floppy, but taking long sweeping turns she can out run just about anything down low. And diving down on FW's trying to run makes me laugh now. It is a simple chase now. I also agree with the gun weakness, but i'll take her as she comes.
